    WORKING FOR YOU
From our initial conversation, I could tell that Rob was an experienced, knowledgeable guy. He was honest, detail-oriented, and offered to refinish our badly weathered 12X24 cedar deck for what we thought was a fair price, which we then proceeded to schedule. Rob and the four young men who helped him worked hard to sand away the weathered, damaged surface areas, including six steps and surrounding wood railings, and repairing spots that had rotted away. That was followed by applying two coats of stain/sealer - when it was finished, the deck looked like new! Rob himself is a true professional and we appreciate the fact that the men he contracted to help him were also extremely hard working, personable, polite - like he is - and treated our property with great care. We highly recommend him to anyone who wants their construction project done right and to their personal satisfaction.

    Don's Painting & Handyman
In the ad for this service it said he handled minor electrical and plumbing issues. Well, upon arrival he told us he could not install dimmer switches or fix a leaky sink. I think those are minor issues. Also, no ladder to install the vent cover. Luckily we had enough other odd jobs around the house to keep him busy for the day. The work he did was satisfactory, but the fact that the actual "handyman" work we needed done is still undone results in an average "c" grade. Ad was misleading and he would not even give me a quote to paint my front porch at a later date. He apparently doesn't do porches or decks either. Really.
All in all, he was a nice enough guy, and I got a lot of chores done around the house, but we still need a handyman and painter to come out do the repairs and upgrades we wanted to get done with this deal. Was it worth $250 for 8 hours, maybe, maybe not.

It went wonderful. He is extremely professional. We continue to use him because his quality is extremely high and he makes sure to always clean up after himself each day. He is a very nice and great guy. He is very meticulous in detail work and I would say the quality of his work is the best thing about him. His prices are also reasonable and he does not charge you for extra time if he makes a mistake or if something needs changed.

    Integrity Home Solutions Inc

Jonathan (owner) came to the house to view the work that was needed to be performed. He provided a quote within a week, it was higher than the other three quotes but he was able to both start & finish sooner than the others and being that we had a several children moving in due to an adoption placement, we needed to move swiftly to get everything in place.
We signed a contract and were ready to move forward.
Communications were sketchy from the start. Oftentimes I had to call the owner to find out when he was coming because the day/time promised, no one showed up, no phone call, nothing. He did answer each time I'd call but there was always an excuse - waiting on a bathtub for another job, held up at another job later than I thought, changed our plans because materials they were waiting on for another job arrived, they were grouting, tiling, etc. This occurred on at least five occasions.

The work took a week longer than originally communicated. After phone calls back and forth, it was because the tile needed more time to set. Normally, I'd think this was fine but the expectations were set when they left that it would take "x time" to dry and they'd be back Saturday at 2. Saturday at 5, I call to ask "when are you coming, thought you were coming at 2" and it was "oh, well it needs more time to dry, will be there Monday morning at 8" -- without looking at it... Monday came and went, no show.
The ceiling mounted shower leaked which I didn't notice until the several days later (kids used it the first few times) and rather than replace the ruined drywall on the ceiling, he sent the plumber to fix / adjust the rain shower head.
After the job was finished, they provided me a bill for additional charges for additional work performed (running a heating duct) which was unauthorized. Being new to hiring an outside worker, I received a contract for the work to be performed at a price we agreed to pay. The owner agreed the additional work performed via e-mail but the owners wife sent several harassing messages threatening a lawsuit and collections for the additional funds. I opened a complaint with the BBB but have since closed it when they agreed to no longer pursue additional funds.
Overall, the main concerns were the lack of communication, the timeliness of scheduling, not repairing the drywall from the leak that spread across a significant portion of the shower ceiling, the bill for additional unauthorized work and the harassment from the owner's wife.

    Black Bear Builders
Stuart came to our home initially to look at the projects we needed to complete. He was friendly and professional, neatly dressed and seemed very trustworthy. We discussed the costs and he offered us some ways to save a little money by getting the area ready and emptied before the work began. When he came back the following week to complete the projects as scheduled, he was organized and got everything done with very little muss and fuss, and left the house as clean as when he came.
We are thrilled with our new organization and storage in the closet, and the coat rack is very sturdy and useful. We are very pleased wth the work done, and would feel comfortable recommending Black Bear Builders to any of our friends.

It sucked. The owner Timothy Hamre came out to my home to assess the needed repairs and gave me a quote within a week. I negotiated to a fair price then three days before beginning the job he tried getting me to pay him in cash. I told him I couldn't do that because it would not allow me to deduct the expense for taxes.

I told him I sympathize that I don't like to pay income taxes either but that it is illegal for him to make this request. He immediately replied and said he wasn't asking for cash trying to be illegal but because he had run out of company checks and wanted to get his guys paid immediately, and in the same email he told me he would not be doing the job because he got a bigger job. He did this after settling on the price and I was waiting for them to show up two weeks later. I was a carpenter for thirty years and I told him, you can't b******* a BULLSHITTER.

So they are trying to get away with not paying taxes and I can only think of three different reasons to do this. Illegal aliens, child support/ alimony or robbing the government. And since he was an a** after the fact I am very glad he didn't touch my home. He'll get what he deserves.

    Here is what he said in his emails;

Tim; Since we significantly reduced the price on this, I'd like to do this work on a cash basis, if that's OK with you.

Me; Since the investment into the house is tax deductible I need to put it on credit card so I can easily claim the deduction. On Angie's List it says you take credit cards is that correct?

Tim; Yes I do, but unfortunately that negates the purpose of any cash transaction as anything going into my account (which is where my credit card transactions go) is monitored and therefore it doesn't help much as far as giving me any benefit. Also, I get charged a percentage fee for credit card transactions which further reduces the actual amount I get for the work.

Me; I truly am sympathetic, I hate to pay taxes also but I am not able to help break the law because of my devotion to God.

Tim: WHOOAAAA, James! Nobody said anything about breaking the law or not paying taxes. Somehow we got way off base here. I 'm just out of company checks and I know since this job has been discounted significantly, my guys will want to be paid quickly. Actually while we were negotiating price, I took on a large remodeling job in St.Louis Park and being as it's late in the season, I don't think I'll get time to get to this this year before it starts getting cold.

What kind of idiot tries to deny doing something when the evidence is right there on the same email?

Get someone else to work on your houses. You'll be safer.

    CADY HANDYMAN SERVICES
It went very well. I have used Cady several times and they always do good work at reasonable rates. Their time estimates are pretty good, and their person doing the job typically works pretty hard to keep to their estimated timing for each job. They did a very nice job on this trip installing a new exterior door, and some new siding that needed replacement on the building. I own a few rental properties in the area, and they have done nice work on several of the properties I own.

Jon Meyer was the craftsman who performed the work. He visited the site and said he could replace the door but did not have the bender to put new trim on. I asked if he could carefully remove the trim and reinstall. He said he could but there would be a few small nail holes. I said fine. The door was replaced the same day. Trim looked great and was fully cauked. Door works better than ever.

He came out when he said he was and gave us multiple options for the repair. Wasn't the lowest quote but was close. Has a regular job so could only work on weekends, but was the one we thought was the most honest and direct. Work was done right and he made sure that it was done correctly. Did sub out the caulking of the tub and painting, he did the rest. Subs were great and very professional.
