  • My 401 has outpaced the guys in my union who didn't self direct their investments. With Jim's advise we have been able to smooth out the losses and gains by balancing portfolio and I was able to retire at 61. Have moved across country and still have Jim manage our savings. He's always responsive and available.

  • I would give the accountant an A, but the receptionist was short and unprofessional, she would get a C-. I almost left because of her. She also tried to bill me, even though I had already paid for the service. She did not apologize for sending this duplicate bill or take any responsibility. But once I got to the accountant, Ellen Geiser, everything went smoothly. Their prices are reasonable.

  • I purchased Angies list deal because I had a new complication to my tax reporting, which I couldn't  figure out how to input into Turbo tax.  I brought my Tax detail into Rapacki 95% complete.  I also explained to him that there was some additional reporting that needed to be complete.  He explained to me that the Big Deal was only for "basic" reporting.  He completed the basic taxes and forwarded back to me.  There were errors in it, that I explained over the phone.  He corrected some of those errors and electronically filed my return.  I received information later that required me to file an amended return, with which I corrected a couple more errors.  I did not use Rapacki to file the return.

  • I've used them several years. One of the reasons I use them is because they find things with my income that I'm qualified for. I never even knew about some of the tax breaks I get. He does that stuff really great, and does well to ask the questions about medical expenses. I put over $750 in home renovations for physical assistance, and he knew to ask if my doctor recommended it so I could get a tax break. He also is good to suggest other things I may get a tax break for. I feel confident knowing that he is competent with doing my taxes regarding tax breaks and stocks.

  • I sold the family farm in Iowa which was going to add complexity to this year's tax return preparation. I did not have confidence in the accountant I had used in the past so I Googled for a new one that was relatively near to where I lived. I chose Stauber CPA based on their website description of services: "We are experienced in all matters of accounting and taxation, IRS problem resolution, estates and trusts, business formation, financial planning and investment, real estate and business sales."

The cost basis number for the farm was based on information provided by my deceased father's accountant. It was going to result in a substantial capital gain and therefore substantial tax obligation.  Byron Stauber pushed me on this number when we first met but I was resolute in relying on it's accuracy. Byron completed the tax returns, we met and I paid the fee. The following day, Byron emailed me asking me to call him. He asked for additional estate-related documentation because he still felt strongly that the cost basis number was incorrect. He contacted a tax attorney he knew who did a brief review and also thought it was quite likely that the cost basis was incorrect based on the trail of events documented in wills and probate documents. I engaged the attorney who confirmed this. The result was a substantially lower capital gain and tax obligation. Byron went above and beyond which saved me thousands of dollars.

  • Jim Mertz and his staff have provided careful, well researched financial planning for years for us.  While in the electricians union you may "self direct" your 401K or allow the contracted company to manage it for you.  Instead, I had Jim balance my portfolio twice annually for years and have found that I've come out far ahead of my union brothers who just 'let it roll' with the companies that have handled our accounts.  As a result I have been able to retire at 61 with 34 years in the union while others are still having to work.  Mertz Wealth Strategies comes highly recommended by my wife and myself!

  • The initial meeting went well. I received my completed tax returns and sent them off. The federal was fine, but I received an amended return from the state with a return amount several thousand dollars less than the original refund. The mn tax income tax withheld had been "mis-typed" with the federal tax withheld instead. I expected an accurate return. I didn't get it.

  • She was excellent at explaining the complexities of QuickBooks in a friendly and easy to understand way. She even came to my home. She helped me greatly in setting up QuickBooks for my business. She was very quick to respond to any email questions that I had.

  • I understood that my taxes were complex and would have prefered that he just come right out and talk to me about the additional charge right away instead of waiting until they were almost completed.  I have no problem paying more but he should have told me as soon as he realized my taxes were out of the normal Groupon.

  • I met with him for an hour.  He was trying to see how he could help me in regards to getting my taxes done. He suggested that I file an extension. He was not very detailed in how to make out the form. I felt as if he was speaking down to me. There was some dialogue that I have had on the phone that did not go well.  He was rude.  I was trying to show him respect for his time. He never actually told me he was sorry.  He left a voicemail and left pseudo apology.  If he had actually apologize, I would probably be working with him today.  However, the rudeness, talking down to, and pseudo apology does not work.  If he had actually used the words "I'm sorry", then I would feel a lot more respected as a customer and I may have checked yes for using him in the future.  This report is used as a message that you cannot talk to customers the way Craig talked to me.  This just does not fly with me.  As a consumer, I don't like doing this, "giving bad reports".
