  • Our overall experience with Finished Basement was very good. The basement turned out as we envisioned, but it did require us to remain engaged throughout the project. The key point here is that its *your project* and you need to be involved all the way along. That said, Finished Basement is fully capable of taking a project from inception to completion with minimal involvement from the homeowner but its in your own interest to remain involved. The reason being is that you are building a custom solution and that means unexpected challenges will occur which require discussion or even pivoting during construction. If you are present its much easier to navigate any issue that may arise. Here are some key highlights of our project that we think will help others. Basement Design - This is a key capability for Finished Basement as their designers are well versed since they see many different designs. We would recommend prior to meeting with Finished Basement that you sit down and really think about what you want. This will produce a much richer conversation when you do meet with your designer. We would also recommend to make sure you are comfortable with your designer. If you don't feel a connection interview a different designer because this is an emotional experience and a big purchase. You want to enjoy the journey you are about to embark on and that's why its important to work with someone you trust. Our designer, Jean, was a thoughtful and energetic person who quickly understood what we wanted the space to be for our family. Project Management (construction) - Here again its important to feel comfortable with the project manager as they will be in your house everyday overseeing work. Our project manager, Matt, was very thoughtful and emphasized working with him if there was an issue with any construction concerns that arose. You should also discuss with the project manager what is important to you and this should cover everything from specific construction elements all the way to contractors. \\ Things You Should Know // * Custom Wood Work - We had some custom wood work done and the results were excellent, but make sure you are prepared for the fumes. Specifically enameling, varnishing, and staining have high levels of fumes that can be hard to tolerate. Admittedly we were not prepared for the level of fumes and ended up keeping all our windows open even during a few cold nights in September - October. It was only a few days and we knew the results would be good so we tried to keep air moving at all times. The custom wood work is worth it, but be prepared to deal with fumes. I would also note that the fumes caused our water heater to "lock out" because there was a sensor on it that triggered due to the fumes. Our project manager took care of the problem by purchasing a couple extra sensors to ensure we got the water heater back up and running because our original sensor became compromised after triggering too many times. This is an example of where Finished Basement made sure to do what was right and handle the situation. * Lighting - If you have a non-walkout basement like us and the electrician suggests putting in what appears to be a lot of lighting don't fight it. We found the electricians employed by Finished Basement to be excellent and their recommendations were spot on. All of the lighting they suggested was absolutely necessary and we are very happy to have all of it installed. * Unexpected Challenges - There will be unexpected issues that arise and is no one persons fault. This could be anything from damaged deliveries, permit issues, wrong items, or anything that simply was not planned. Keep an open mind and discuss the challenge with your project manager. Pretty much anything can be addressed within reason as long as you bring it up immediately and be prepared that you may need to adjust as well. We had a to make a couple alterations along the way but we asked ourselves if anyone would know the difference and in the end almost always the answer is "no". We did not comprise quality, but did make a couple trade-offs to keep things moving along. * Cost - The cost of our project was a fair amount higher then we budgeted. If you have a tight budget Finished Basement may not be the re-modeler for you. That said, you are paying for a turnkey solution that included certain services we wanted such as a designer and project manager to handle all the different construction trades. On our project we had several different trades onsite so it was important to have all the trades managed through a single person. * Timing - Be prepared that construction will last for a few months and your life will be interrupted. Not much else to say except to remember you wanted to finish your basement which means people have to constantly be going in and out of your house. No way around it, just focus on how great things will be when the project is finished.

  • It went great. Mike listened to what we wanted and we designed the project together. He designed the project with the intent that it would be done correctly and will last. He addressed all of the potential concerns we had with water drainage, slope of our yard and upkeep of the patio. We are very pleased. It is beautiful to look at and built securely. We would definitely work with Mike and his team again .

  • When we decided to remodel our basement I contacted several contractors and was kind of surprised at the lack of response I got from a number of contractors. It literally took weeks for one contractor to call me back and some just never bothered. This was NOT the case with Fair & Square. They were very responsive from the start and after meeting with me to review the details of what we wanted to do to finish out our basement they provided me a ballpark estimate for the project. They didn’t come in as the cheapest bid but it did fit within by budget and to that point they had been the easiest to work with and seemed the most interested in the project. We signed on to have them complete the job including adding a fireplace, sound insulation in the ceiling and my favorite, the Onyx shower surround in the bathroom. They took several weeks to complete the project and were great about making sure we knew what to expect and when. If an issue came up they let us know and offered reasonable solutions. The project came in within the cost range they originally proposed and we ended up with exactly what we were looking for. I couldn’t really ask for more than that!

  • Salesman was 30 minutes late for his appointment. Tried to sell a complete drain tile system when all that was needed was to repair the crack in the basement foundation. Said they didn't do many crack repairs and would warrant their work unless a complete drain tile system was installed. The basement already had a drain tile system and the only time water got into the basement was from the crack. Sump pump has not run and when inspected was found to be dry. Service was schedule to repair the crack. Service team was over 2 hours late to the appointment and called 12 minutes prior to the original appointment time to advise that they were going to be late. Upon arrival, the service team quickly got to work and commented that this was one of the most common repairs they do? (Not what the salesman told us?) The service team cleaned out the crack and exposed the drain tile system and tested the drain tile by pouring a 5 gallon bucket of water which quickly flowed away and into the sump issues and the current drain tile system was functioning quite well, no need to completely replace it. Service team apologized for being late and did an outstanding job. Other than the self serving salesman and the service team being over 2 hours late, the quality of the work was excellent. Sales should understand what the customer wants and truly needs vs trying to push a product or service that is unnecessary. Also, stand being your work! You have an excellent product and it works! Don't let poor communication ruin your business and your reputation.

  • Edgework was super responsive, great to work with and paid great attention to detail.  All the subcontractors they brought in were an arm of this same type of professionalism.  We would definitely use them again.

  • Responsive, informative.  Had 5 different quotes - multiple solutions were offered.  Sat down with us and showed us exactly what needed to be done - on paper and pulling back the sinking driveway.
The support ledge was badly deteriorated.  Dug down a few feet to insure that the supports were adequately repaired.
    Friendly, high quality service.

  • Kevin came out to give us an estimate on a damp floor issue we are
having.  He was very professional and helpful.  He gave his honest
opinion that the issue was not something drain tile would help with.  He
even spoke with another person at the company to confirm this.
Although we do not need services right now I would use Standard Water
    Control should the need arise.

  • Project done on time and on budget at great value.
Maria clearly explained all steps in process and Pavel made recommendations to make basement layout more livable and to help improve eventual resale value. The workers were on time and they finished up the project within 5 weeks.
Would definitely work with them again.

  • We were very pleased with the results with both projects. Trent and his team were excellent to work with and both projects were completed on-time and on-budget. My wife and I highly recommend Excel Builders.  Doyle & Marilyn Kirkeby

  • They arrived on time and kept me informed of what they were doing each step of the way. Very nice and courteou. They needed to come back another day to fill in a gap with the appropriate color of caulk and they came back as scheduled and completed the job. I would definitely recommend to anyone that needed this type if work done!!
