Countertop Installation reviews in Ypsilanti

My wife and I had Mark Ellis recently completely renovate our bathroom. We were installing a new tub, vanity, tile flooring, tile surround, and installing a shower niche. We knew going in that there was at least some water damage in the subfloor from the previous owners poor work (They had laid a vinyl floor over the previous floor and failed to seal it properly along the tub). After getting in contact with him, Mark met with us in our home to go over the scope of the project and to discuss our budget. Mark was the third contractor we met with and he was by far the one with the most reasonable budget and the only one who would explain his quote in any detail. He was also very clear in his communication for what the project entailed, what he needed from our end, and when hed be free from other jobs to handle our project. We did have to email him a few times after the initial conversation in order to get a solidified start, but once we had confirmation from him they started the next day. My wife and I also both work nights, and Mark was very good at communicating when his crew would be coming in so we could prepare and we were both very thankful for that. The people on Marks crew were all very respectful of our house and did great work. I was honestly impressed with how clean everything was once they had finished. Once the project started, Marks crew was on site 5 days a week working full days. If there was ever a day in the week they couldnt come in, like for Thanksgiving, they still came that Saturday to help keep the project on time. The only hiccup in the entire project was after they had finished the demo, there was water damage on the exterior wall that neither parties had anticipated. As soon as they found out, Mark met with us and described to us how hed be able to solve the problem and exactly how it would affect our budget. The entire project stayed on time and within the budget we agreed upon. We had the same crew working on our house every day, so they were able to work efficiently and all of them knew the expectations for the project. My wife and I are both extremely satisfied by the final product, and by the work and conduct of his entire crew. We plan on using Mark for our future projects and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable contractor.

Great job. Went to their shop and chose the material. Del came to the house and prepared a template. The new counter top is installed! The installation was fast and went well. I am really pleased with the work done. I'm looking forward to getting an estimate for a new kitchen counter top too. They do beautiful work!

I recommend Mark and his team.  They do nice work, the team are professional and pleasant and they handle odds and ends while they are here without charging more or making a fuss about it.  They are careful around my elderly parents and pets.
The outside work was the bulk of the work, my house is a two story with a walkout basement, so the work that needed to be done, in many places was very high.  I have a back deck off the main story, with a stairway going to the basement level.  They had to paint all the wood, and replace the caps.  Looks great.
The inside work was a running list, that they knocked out for me.  They clean up after themselves too.
When I called Mark on the weekend, about my sink collapsing, he called me right back, came over the next day to assess and came back the day after to fix.  (We could still use the sink, we had it propped up.  I appreciate that kind of turnaround and service, without charging me an arm and a leg on the weekend.
Mark and his team did a lot of work for me last year, when I purchased the home and it needed some renovations and painting.  One of the things that I really like about Mark is he shares his opinion, about options on how to handle something and if he thinks something is a poor idea.  They will continue to be my go to team for my home.

Similar to the other review where the reviewer gave a "C", the quality of the work isn't great. The bevel is uneven. It's as if they don't use polishing pads that are capable of of polishing a high shine. The counters are not only dull, they have pits and cracks on the surface. When I run my hand across the counter, I can feel the imperfections. This not the quality of work you would get from Home Depot or some other big box store. I wouldn't expect it from a specialty retailer either.

Mark and his crew are all great, friendly people. Always professional, they take pride in the quality of their work and in making sure that their clients are satisfied. Very flexible and easy to work with. Will be working with them again.

Doug and his crew completed the agreed upon work professionally and according to schedule. This was really important since I had other work scheduled and things needed to happen in a particular order in a small window of time.  The end results exceeded my expectations.  In addition, they were able to complete a variety of things that I had been wanting to attend to for a long while.  This included a bathroom sink replacement, wood fence repair, patching and painting, toilet repair, and other things that I am probably forgetting.
Though this is the first time I am reviewing Wolverine Custom Painting, I have used them for many services since 2012, not only for my own residence, but also for work needed on rental properties.  In the past, Wolverine Custom Painting has helped me with everything from light handyman work to a remodel on a rental property that was built in the 1890's (and in extreme rough shape when I purchased it).  Being more than satisfied with their work, I continue to hire them and would recommend them to others as a quality option.  Thank you, Wolverine Custom Painting!

We went to their showroom, and were able to wander through all the granite slabs available freely (no pushy sales tactics!). We had on hand a drawing and rough square footage for our kitchen and were given a quote immediately, with the price broken down per square foot, any extras we wanted (edging, sink etc) shown separately. We were given samples of the granite that we were debating over and took them home to see which one would work for our design.
They gave us the best price by far, and we decided to go for it. Granite City requires half the amount due up front, and then the remainder due after installation. We scheduled a date for measuring, the employee came on time and was pleasant.
Two weeks later, our granite was ready to be installed! Again, the staff arrived on time, and first prepared the house for some demo, placing paper down on the floors, moving any furniture that may be in the way of the slab coming through, etc. They removed the laminate in no time, but our cabinets turned out not to be level after the removal, so before placing the granite, they resolved that issue.
The granite slab came in in two pieces and was epoxied together (you can't even see the seam). After letting the epoxy dry for about 45 minutes, they resumed work and ensured that the edges were perfect. They cleaned everything, including sweeping and vacuuming the hardwood floor, and moved all the furniture back to its original position. We were told to call/visit the store to provide final payment, which we did.
We highly recommend this company; the stone looks great, and we have no issues. Everyone we dealt with, especially the woman who owns the company is very friendly and knowledgable. If we ever need more granite, we will without a doubt, use this company again.

Our experience with MGD could not have been any better! We started out looking at the website to get some ideas on color. Once we narrowed it down, I filled out the online form for an estimate. I had a response back within a couple of hours. Their prices are very competitive. Based on this, we visited their warehouse the next day (Saturday). They have a very large number of granite slabs of many different colors and varieties, plus some nice showroom examples of installations. After seeing the granite slabs, we decided to go with a different color than we originally had in the estimate- I highly recommend going to their showroom to see the slabs. We talked with the guys there about options for the edges, sink, etc. That day we got the final total and put down a 50% deposit. They came out to our house do the final measurements the following Wednesday.
The granite was installed about two weeks later on a Monday. Installation took several hours- the guys were very friendly and informative, covered all the flooring so there would be no damage, and really took their time doing a good job. They sealed the countertops on site and showed me how to do it in the future. The also gave me a lot of information on caring for the granite and some tips on  our upcoming projects for undercabinet lighting and backsplash installation. The granite looks absolutely fantastic- we are so pleased! I highly recommend MGD- and make sure to tell them you are an Angie's List customer- you will get a great deal and maybe even a bonus. They gave us a free matching granite windowsill!

They did not even attempt to match the
granite. When I pointed it out to the owner, he
    stated that stone
wasn't the same color as the rest of counter. No,really? On their
website they go into great lengths about how carefully they match up
the granite. If it is getting late in the day
    and they want to go
home they are just going to slap it together. I
    don't know if the
pic does it justice but it is glaring in real life.
    Backsplash ? I spent $650 just on
tiles. I asked the owner to replace the outer trimming because
    it has
chips in it. He told me that wasn't possible because there
always be small chips in it when they cut it with a saw.
    Okay, so why
did I waste $650 on this stuff if it isn't going to
    look good any
way? He offered to fill in the chips with grout.
    Still hasn't
contacted me about when he is going to that. I still
    think it should
    be replaced.
am a single working person and I
saved up for two years to get
this work done. It doesn't look good.

I sent an e-mail to Trusted Improvement's sales address on a Tuesday night at 10:30pm.  Andy LaDuke responded that same evening saying he could come out the next day for an estimate.  We had also contacted two other companies, neither of which offered to come to our site, but instead asked for drawings and rough measurements.  Luckily, Trusted Improvement had another job in my town that day, so it was convenient for them.  At any rate, Andy's promptness and attentiveness had already won his company points.
When Andy came out for the estimate, he was very detailed and noticed things that I hadn't even considered; possible interactions of the new counters with existing moulding, additional ideas for us to think about, etc.  But I never felt like he mentioned things just for additional income for his company.  In fact, he wanted to save us some money by recommending things we did not need to do or could do more efficiently.  His personality is quite easy going, and we felt like we could trust him with our house, and particularly our kitchen.  The estimate process went quickly and Andy answered all our questions inside of an hour and had a written estimate ready for us to ponder over.
Once we received the competitor quotes, it turned out that Trusted Improvement had a slightly higher price than the other two.  On the plus side, Andy's quote was almost completely turnkey, meaning we didn't have possible obfuscated costs with other contractors (or using our own time to fill in the service gaps).   The other quotes required us to coordinate our own demolition and removal, as well as plumbing of the sink.  They would sometimes do the service with extra charge, but none of them would touch plumbing.  Trusted Improvement's quote was so inclusive, including all plumbing, installing legs to our island extension, demo of old counters... it even included an 18GA stainless sink as part of the cost.  It was important to us to have it just be done without mucking about with several contractors.
Once we made the decision to use Trusted Improvement, Radu visited the house (on a Saturday, which is very convenient) to perform the template process.  I had never coordinated the installation of counters before, so I didn't know what was normal in a templating process until I watched some videos later.  It seems that some companies make a full size template out of stiff cardboard and hot glue, then take it back to the shop to actually stick on the granit slab for an exact cutting process.  This sometimes requires removing the counters before hand (which means you are without countertops for two weeks or so while they cut the slabs).  Radu's visit was almost exactly like the estimate when Andy visited!  He simply made a drawing on some graph paper and took some measurements.  It almost seemed to me to be a bit anticlimatic, in fact.  I was expecting a huge process, but it only took about an hour.  Radu has excellent design sense, and came up with some great ideas and insights.  He talked us out of introducing a gentle radius in the island extension when the home decor would have clashed with it.
I asked Radu if we could pick our slab that same day and so he made room in his schedule for us (the same Saturday).  The slab choosing process turned out to be a little stressful for us.  My fiancee and I knew the type of granite we wanted (New Venetian Gold) even before the estimate phase, so upon arriving at the warehouse Radu had already set aside three to pick from.  It took quite a while to get to those slabs, since they were buried.  While they were using the crane to remove other slabs, some were quite pretty and we showed interest.  However, we were told those were already claimed by someone else.  We soon found that this resulted in a limited set for us to choose from.  To Radu's credit, he had picked the best NVG slabs in the entire place, but there were some obvious aesthetic problems that we wanted to avoid on those slabs, and it would have been nice to have a few more to pick from.  Radu ensured that he would be able to cut around the things we didn't like and we felt we had no choice but to trust him on that.  At the end of the day, the process left us a bit unsettled since this is an expensive endeavor and it wasn't perfect.
Installation day came quicker than we expected.  When the guys arrived, I was impressed at how fast things were being set up and the counters taken out.  I called Andy and he was picking up some supplies to install the sink as well as to mount two bookshelfs that I built to be installed as island extension support.  I was again impressed at how accommodating the team was in using my custom bookshelfs in the counter project.  They didn't know the design until arriving onsite, but were able to be flexible and do whatever it took to have the job be finished to our satisfaction.  The slabs looked great as they were lifted and slid into place.  Radu was right about being able to cut around the imperfections of the slabs as promised.  They are completely gorgeous!  He also took great care in joining the single seam and detailing it out to be as inconspicuous as possible.  Radu is a man of few words when he is at work.  As far as I'm concerned he can say nothing at all when he performs as well as he does.  The other guys with him made up for it with quick witted conversation, even after lifting a 500 pound island granite counter into place.
The job took about 4-5 hours to completion, including sink installation, which Andy and his son Alex knocked out together.  You can really tell that Andy cares about doing a great job for his customers and we plan to use them for future projects down the road.  I sat for hours afterward admiring the difference the granite made to our kitchen.  We were actually pretty stressed about installation day, but the guys at Trusted Improvement made it happen gracefully and without a worry in the world.  Thanks!
