    Arnolds Home Improvement
We were rescheduled four times, which meant that four times, our own jobs were shifted. My husband works at home, so we were able to accommodate, with some minor shifting of schedules. Our installers had to come back to recaulk the tub because of gaps and also to install the hand-held shower they'd forgotten. When I went to put shelf paper in the newly installed vanity, I discovered a small puddle, which had done some slight damage to the vanity floor; they had incorrectly threaded the drain pipes. My husband adjusted the pipes; I notified Arnold's. The damage was not enough to make an issue out of, but I felt they should be aware. Later that evening, as we spent some quality time in the bathroom cleaning up an unholy amount of drywall dust and carefully scraping the very sloppily applied excess caulk off the new granite vanity top, we realized the problem had not been corrected, so I emailed the company to have someone out to fix it. They responded quickly and all seemed well. Until a couple of days later, when we realized the shower was leaking into the basement.
Again responding quickly, the project supervisor assessed the situation - improper soldering - and gave instructions to his crew member. Unknown to us, the crew member did not follow instructions and in doing his own thing, he took a chunk out of the new tub as part of his "fix." Granted, not a part that showed, so we weren't even aware of it until the next morning when we realized we still had a leak in the basement. The project supervisor arrived within about 30 minutes of our call and took care of things.
Since then we've had more caulk (or lack thereof) issues, dealt with the damage they did to the molding and door frame and have artfully tossed a throw rug over the damage they did to the floor. I didn't notify them of these issues because I do not want them in our home ever again.
We lost a stupid amount of time from our own work because of Arnold's. With every email of complaint, I copied Jason Arnold. He responded once to say he "understood" our "frustration," but he couldn't trouble himself to apologize for what we had to deal with as a result of the company that bears his name. The supervisor's responsiveness is the only reason I didn't give this company failing grades across the board.
I cannot imagine the circumstances under which we would use or recommend Arnold's in the future.

    • Our bathroom remodel was our first experience with any remodeling company. We can truly say we are glad we chose Wesson Builders. The salesman was able to create a plan for both bathroom areas that captured our expectations. He was very helpful with product lines and new ideas. Once project was finalized all materials were ordered and the work was scheduled. Every worker was professional, cordial, and very knowledgeable regarding their aspect of the project. Any sub-contractors used shared the same philosophy of being prompt and clean up the work site each afternoon. We did not experience any down time from the start to the end of project. Wesson understands the needs of the customer and they share in the customers vision of the final project. We were extremely pleased the CEO of Wesson visited the project several times and personally assisted in color selection. The entire project took 4 weeks to complete. We will definitely choose Wesson in the future for any other remodeling needs.

Jacob was on time for the initial estimate and worked with me through several revisions.  I had always done this type of work on my own in the past, so hiring a contractor was a big change for me.  I found Jacobs Ladder through Angies list, and the reviews all seemed very positive, so I was willing to take a chance.
Since I was not certain I wanted to turn over the project completely, I asked for several versions of the proposal to break out costs and options.  Jacob worked with me through each revision, even though it got a little confusing at times.  In the end, they ended up doing most of the work he originally quoted.
They gave us a start date about 3 weeks out from the time they gave us the quote, and stuck to that date.  The guys (Bob and Jeff) showed up each day at 8:00 and put in a full days work each time.  We never had to guess if or when they would be there - which is not a storry you hear much with contractors.  The work area was always cleaned up each day and they did their best to keep things clean throughout the house during the work.  They covered walkways with runners each day to keep the floors cleaned and protected.
As an engineer, I can be a very detail-oriented person, so each day I woudl review their work in the evening and ask questions about it, even putting sticky notes all over the room to cover details.  Bob was kind enough to go over each of these items and always answered my questions in a way that made me comfortable they knew what they were doing.  Whenever there was a question or issue, I could talk it over with Bob and come up with a good solution.
Now that the work is complete, we have no regrets in hiring Jacobs Ladder and have already recommended them to others.

    Riverbrook Construction
Our experience with RiverBrook Construction was horrible. It was a disaster from the beginning. We signed up with them in March of last year and they guaranteed us that they would be done by early may and we had a complete kitchen put in. They didn't even actually start until the end of my and we made it clear to them that the whole intent and purpose of doing this was for our sons graduation and we told him upfront that our graduation date is June 10th. They came up with many excuses and I called them up towards the end of May and told them that we were done with them and I was cancelling and they were not doing the job. They made a commitment at that point that they were going to get it done for us. It got done the day before the graduation. It was a nightmare and a disaster, of course nothing went right, they cut corners, they promised to make things right on some things but not on others. We just noticed the other day and we have to give them a call because our back splash for the counter top is normally glued to the wall and now the glue is pulling away from the wall in some spots and we are not even a year into this. For the most part, RiverBrook had decent reviews and there were some that had problems with them but we thought the good outweighed the bad. They did not live up to their end of their bargain.

    Wayne Pavlika Builders Inc
Owner sent in teenage son to remove grout from shower and he destroyed the expensive tile that was not to be replaced. The kid had no instruction on what to do and made a bigger mess. Owner admitted to fault and agreed to replace some of the tile that was scratched and gouged. I should have made him replace all of the tile, including the flooring, however was out of a bathroom since the second week of Jan. 2011 and was desperate to finish the job. Unfortunately the original tile was discontinued and I was forced to pick a tile that somewhat matched. The tile that I picked was half the cost of the original tile and looks OK. I was promised that a curtain would be installed to trap the dust flow from the construction and it was not. My house was totally covered in dust and the mess was not cleaned up. The contractor did not finish the job and the communication sucked. I was forced to hire another contractor to complete the finish work. The person that replaced the shower liner and tile was very good and it showed in his work. He was under the impression that the job was finished till we brought up the fact the tile was basically destroyed to the owner. Who by the way did not even check the final work completed. The person that replaced the shower liner and tile was stuck in the middle and was obviously reprimanded by the owner for not communicating that the kid destroyed the original tile. The tile guy showed up to complete the job with a big time attitude and it showed in his work. Also he did not work on Fridays and was extremely slow at what he did do. He dragged out the job and it basically took over 8 weeks to complete. Way to long for what needed to be done. I took pictures of the damage, documented the days and hours worked and he can take me to court for the balance of the money.
