  • We had quite the saga getting to Roger Dykstra.  We had previously used Roger Fussman for masonry work, but he turned down the job!  His recommendation was to try Straus Masonry out of Weidman. They came out, surveyed the damage and promised an estimate by mail--that never came.
From there, we tried calling Jason the Mason.  I called this guy twice over a 4-week period to request an estimate.  Each time, I got voicemail and left a clear message with name, telephone number, and details.  He couldn't be bothered even to return the call.
I can understand being too busy to do the job or not wanting it, but it takes no time simply to return a call, which is basic courtesy.  I
congratulate him on having so much business now and in the future that  he doesn't care about new customers because I sure as heck won't use a  guy who can't be bothered to reply (not that I could!) and certainly won't recommend him to others.  DN Rau Incorporated also couldn't be bothered to even return a call.  Skinner Masonry was too busy to come give an estimate, but at least replied.
We ended up with Dykstra on the recommendation of one of the older farmers around here.  They know how to answer a phone.  They came out quickly and gave us an estimate.  They gave us a start date and stuck to it.  They were here every day and, on a couple occasions, stayed late into the evening.  And the work is wonderful.  Unless you look closely, you really can't tell that there was ever a gaping hole in the stonework!

  • They were very good, very expensive but very good. They were courteous. They came when they said they were going to come. They were timely. They worked cleanly, they didn't leave a mess. They were efficient. The manager of the company was very professional and polite. They're certainly not the cheapest but sometimes you get what you pay for. We got several quotes, they were the most expensive quote but they weren't entirely out of the ballpark of quotes.

  • The work was fine. The one thing that happened is they accidentally messed up some of our plumbing underneath our house during the project, basically a pipe came loose about a week after they were gone. But, they did pay for the repair.

  • I was very impressed with this service provider, would use them again, and recommend them highly. I originally contacted them online and received prompt and courteous responses. They showed up on time, took their time with my job, were very attentive to detail, worked hard, and were polite and professional. There were no hidden costs--they vacuumed, spot treated, etc. as part of the regular service. I am very pleased!

  • Our experience with Four Seasons was very positive and I recommend them without reservation.  This winter, we were looking to replace 30 windows in our home to increase energy efficiency.  We received five bids.  While Four Seasons was not the lowest (see below), they were very responsive and willing to deal with us.

Installation could not have gone better.  Assisted by unusually warm winter weather and the fact that, during this slower part of the year,  Four Seasons was able to supply a large team, all 30 windows were installed in four days.  Workmanship was meticulous.  We were amazed at how quickly the job went (and it wasn't a small job!)

The only thing that bothered me a little is very minor: when we first went to them for a quote, the quote was only for their top of the line windows and came back very expensive.  It wasn't until I went back to them with the other quotes we had received that they discussed less expensive windows with us.

While, as mentioned, they did not give us the lowest quote, their customer service and responsiveness were excellent and we prefer to use a local business whenever possible.  I feel in this case that the money was well spent.  We are very happy with the job.

  • There are several markers of a reputable business: quality of product and cost are obviously important, but so is integrity and the willingness to stand behind the work performed. Rand R impressed us in all these aspects.

Our home is a drafty Michigan farmhouse and in order to increase energy efficiency, we decided to insulate the crawlspace. Rand R is business local to us--and we prefer to use local businesses whenever possible. Customer service was prompt and professional and we are happy with the job they performed.

What especially impressed us is this: our crawlspace is very narrow--one literally has to crawl on one's belly to move around in it and there are a variety of pipes that run through it. Following the installation of the insulation, we discovered that pipes had come apart at the joints in two places and we needed to call a plumber to repair them. I do not believe this was the result of negligence at all.

When I reported this to Rand R, they did not argue. They promptly covered the cost of the plumbing repair. They stood behind their work and I commend them for this. Accidents can happen and the mark of a business with integrity is that, when they do, they are addressed fully and appropriately.

For this reason--as well as for the good service we received overall and our happiness with the service provided--I give them an unreserved recommendation.

  • My wife and I are building a large addition to our home. Based on a recommendation from our mortgage officer at Isabella Bank & Trust, I tried to contact Howling Hammer. I emailed twice and then when I received no response, called and left two voice-mail messages. These also received no response at all. How hard is it to return a phone call??!!!!

  • As noted, Greenwald came out to give us an estimate and then we never heard from them again. When I called a few weeks later to follow up, Mr. Herren told me that he had been sick and then to a builder's convention in Florida and was working on sketches for us. I believe he lied because we never heard another word. Very disappointing!

  • I've often got the feeling that Central Plumbing is the only game in town and I think they're aware of this, too. They're the only plumbers we've used in the seven years we've lived in the area and have generally been happy with their services (although they're pricey). Recently, however, we had a less than positive experience. They came out to fix a broken pipe in our crawlspace. In the process of repairing this pipe, another was broken and left broken. They had to come out again to fix the second pipe and then they billed us for a second visit. It wasn't a lot, but I was bothered by this, so I wrote them a polite letter asking if they perhaps miscalculated. I received a "very" defensive letter in return stating, in essence that if I wasn't happy with their work, I could look for another plumbing service! So much for keeping the customer happy, huh?! The fee wasn't high enough for me to really want to go to war over it, but it does make me think twice about Central Plumbing.
