    After reading my first review, the owner of GRapids called me personally the following day. He was immediately apologetic for the negative experience I had had the day before, and assured me that he agreed that this is not an acceptable level of customer service. I was very pleasantly surprised at the professional tone and commentary that he used, and I would say that he did everything in his power to rectify the situation. Well done.

    Not well. After I explained the situation to the Technician, he began working on the in-ground valve. He tried several tools to loosen and remove the valve cap, but said that he wasn't able to, and would therefore have to "dig the whole thing up". When he saw my surprised reaction, he asked "why don't you try it"? I did, and I was able to remove the valve cap with one hand in about five seconds. Surprised and a little embarrassed, he returned to work. After a while he told me that he was confident that the valve was the cause of the problems that I was seeing, and asked if I wanted to replace it. I asked what the estimated cost would be and he said about $220. I was again surprised, and he said that I could probably go buy one myself at Menard's and save some money. Looking on the Menard's website to verify, they did not have the exact valve that I needed, but did have similar one's for about $20. In other words, GRapids charged me a 1000% mark up on the valve itself, plus $70 for the service visit. The Technician insisted that a similar part would not work without a much larger overhaul of the system, and that it would better if he just "went ahead and replaced it". I finally agreed since I didn't see a way to get the exact valve I needed. After he installed the valve, he went to the control box to test all the sprinkler zones. He asked if the timer had been working, and I said that it had also been working intermittently. After pushing all the buttons in what definitely appeared to be random combinations, he told me that it "wasn't working". When I asked what was causing the unit to work intermittently, he replied quote; "I don't know, it's old as ****". (for reference, my house is only 16 years old, so the sprinkler system and control box are that age or newer). When I asked what could be done to fix the control unit instead of replacing it, he replied quote; "I don't know, I'm not a magician". Needless to say, at this point the lack of knowledge and unprofessional demeanor was becoming frustrating. Left with no other real options (other than to ask him to leave) I told him to go ahead and replace the "old as ****" control unit with a new one, which he told me would cost over $270, despite being "the cheapest one". It took about an hour for him to finish installing the valve and the control unit, and replace on sprinkler head. He told me the total was going to be $600. Again seeing surprise on my face, he explained "yeah, we're pretty expensive", but said that it was worth it because although the competition was more affordable, they "didn't know what they're doing". Unfortunately I no longer agree that GRapids services are "worth it", and will be changing service providers in the future for all my sprinkler related services.

    Their turn on service from winterization went fine.. Where the problem has been and still exists is with the Pro-Feeder P1X system they installed.  It worked as near as I can tell until the 1st Winterization that they performed.  When the system didn't seem to be working last year they replaced the unit.  The replacement unit didn't seem to be fully working but I wasn't sure so left it alone.
     
    Came time to winterize the system again and I watched again what they did.  Both times there never was a service plug installed into the pro-feeder system.  Upon THIS year talking with American Hydro who makes the pro-feeder I find out that one should always use a winterization plug otherwise the gears in the housing may be damaged and won't work.  This is EXACTLY what my problem is THIS year with 2 replacements of the pro-feeder and it STILL is not working.  In fact the tank of fluid is actually filling up with water blowing by the o-ring and of course not fertilizing the lawn. 

    Since I could not get the company to contact me regarding this issue, I contacted American Hydro and told them of my predicament .  They are shipping me a newly redesigned system supposedly.  I informed Grapids of this fact but still wanted verification and a call regarding when they could re-install the system when I receive it.

    After multiple and repeated calls with no one in the office and requests for the Service Manager (Randy?) to call me back about this I STILL have had absolutely no response from Grapids.  I have placed no fewer than 8 phone calls and left a message on the Service managers voice  mail to call me...... STILL with no response.

    Never been a problem and I am frequently complimented on how nice my lawn looks. This year I may have forgotten to ask for sprinkler start up, or if we scheduled, we somehow crossed wires on it, but I called one Saturday and left a message expecting a call back that Monday. Instead Paul called within a few hours and came to do it himself that day. I have also asked for weeding one spring several years ago and looked out to see Paul and his two cute kids sitting in my flower beds, pulling weeds. You just get really good service and a beautiful lawn when Dixon does the work!

    They came on time. Demonstrated to me what was done, and gave me instructions for better care of the system. They were in and out in no time. I would use them again...very friendly, courteous and readily gave advice on any questions regarding lawn care.

    Brian installed so many sprinkler heads! I think we ripped him off. We have 3/4 of an acre and he installed 20 zones! He had an employee here installing heads and our controller for an entire weekend after the initial lines had been put in the ground. I insisted that there was no rush, but they wanted to get it done. The finer details, such as switching some head types and making small repairs, has taken a little longer. Overall, we got an exceptional value for such an elaborate sprinkling system.

    Follow up on 7/27/2011: Had James stop out today to look at my drip line that they connected to the irrigation system. The flow was slightly weak and although it was dripping I asked James to make sure I wouldn't have to worry about it. It only took him 1 hour to make it right and I couldn't be happier. Working with The Irrigator has been fantastic. Their customer service is great!

    They did a great job. They also opened up our sprinklers last year, and did some minor repairs on the sprinkler heads.  They serviced the system really well, and they told us exactly what was needed to fix it. They arrived on time, and fixed the system wihtout charging us and arm and a leg.  I can't imagine using another company because they did such a good job.

    Briefly, I didn't get the work done. I was very clear when I scheduled this that I needed a valve fixed and would get the system winterized since they were going to be here anyway. I winterized it last year (our 1st year in a house with a system), but decided that as long as they were here, I would pay to watch a pro do it. That way I'm even more comfortable doing it myself next year. I was given a 3 hour window for the work. The service person arrived an hour into the allotted time, but it was quickly clear that her was ONLY here to winterize and did not have the tools to find/fix the valve. He suggested that he winterize it now and come out in the spring to fix the valve. I had to explain again that I had only asked for the winterizing because he was going to be here anyway. He then had to call his boss to see what he would say. Of course, the boss told him to winterize it. I explained again that that was not why he was really here and that I could winterize it myself. He told me he could try and find it without his tools, but labor is $70 an hour. This seemed like a way of throwing $$ away, so I sent him on his way. In the end, I did not feel that the scheduler or the technician bothered to listen to me (until I really pushed it with the tech). I will not be calling them again. I have better things to do with my time and if I am spending my $ with a company, I expect to be listened to. I do not appreciate being made to feel like I don't know what I am talking about or that the customer's needs aren't what's really important.
