I needed brake work done on my car (2007 Hyundai Sonata) and brought it it to Discount Brakes and Mufflers.  I am always apprehensive for any kind of auto repair work, and I sometimes believe that I tend to get taken advantage of because I am female. The auto mechanic told me I needed new rotors and brake pads for the both the front and the rear brakes.  He also told me the rear calipers needed to be replaced.  The estimate he gave me was for $750.00!    Needless to say I thought that amount was outrageous. I  then took the car to an honest mechanic who replaced the front and rear rotors and brake pads and sprayed the calipers with WD-40.  He charged me $373.00.   I have learned my lesson and will research and use Angie's List  before any type of service to save time and money.

I had grinding noises from the right front wheel.  Dropped it off at G&E at 9 am.  They called and said the pads were worn and something? in the brake mechanism was jammed up and rusted.  They did not automatically give me an estimate, I asked and they told me.  I gave them the go-ahead, and asked if it would be ready by 5 pm, they said yes.

At 5 pm the car was ready.  I was told that the rotors could not be turned, so they put in new rotors, but adjusted the bill to stay close to the estimate.  I also had to ask whether they checked the rear brakes, was told they did check and the rear was a little rusted but OK.

They did not offer to show me the old parts, nor did I ask to see the old parts.

I also had a very friendly discussion about the work, why the brakes didn't chirp to warn me they were worn ( "jammed up" ), etc.

They seem to be a small local, friendly,  shop, not a chain.

I am very happy with the price and getting the car back the same day.

Pros: Surprisingly, G&E got the job done by the end of the day (I honestly wasn't expecting that).  The work was completed as ordered, and I asked them at first to check the water pump but later thought better of it, figuring it should really be replaced in case it went bad some time after the timing belt was replaced.  I was pleased to find out they replaced the pump as this was the best course of action, without my needing to specify that.  Some auto service places will replace just the belt and neglect the tensioners and other related components.  G&E made sure they took care of all of that work.  When I priced out the job, I found that these repairs (for just the belt and belt kit) commonly come in around $1000-$1400 for my make and model.  They did all that work, plus the spark plug replacement, water pump replacement, and tune up for just over $900.  The guys there are very friendly, and they did an excellent job.  I noticed my car was starting to idle a bit rough before the tune-up, now it is smooth as silk.  You'd hardly even know they were in my car. When I went to pay, they had lost power due to some road work so they couldn't give me an exact total or invoice.  So they charged me a lower amount so I could get my car back, and called me the next day to give me the balance.  In short - they trusted me to pay what I owed with no runaround. Cons: My only real beef was that they did not call me with an estimate before they started the work.  I've never had that happen before and thought it strange.  But they were fair with me in the end, so I'm not too perturbed.  The other thing is they are a little flaky about being responsive.  An email to them from their website went unanswered, so I had to call (not a biggie).  But when I showed-up after work before they closed at 6pm on the next day so I could pay the balance (got there at 5:23), they were already gone.  That irritated me to be honest.  If you have posted hours, have someone there please!  I figured they probably bugged out early for Cinco de Mayo ;-)   Summary: On balance I was fairly pleased.  Their communication needs a bit of work, but hey, they did a good job, got it done quick, and charged me a reasonable price.  What's to complain about really?  I would go back to them with more work in the future.

It was good that they got it all in in a day. They got all the parts ordered and got it done. I had absolutely no problems with it at all.

I had a friend go over and get a quote and it was $100 less than the dealer. I figure that they are honest and they are not going to sell me extra stuff.
