Home Builder reviews in Marquette

I recently relocated from down-state to Marquette and wanted a contractor to remodel my kitchen.  Although I was aware there was a large company which does kitchen remodels, I was told they were expensive (I did not get an estimate).  I was referred by a couple people to an independent contractor.  I met with him and agreed upon a contract.  However, a couple weeks later he told me that he took a new job and would be relocating down-state.  He referred me to Scott of Northland Builders for the remodel.  Scott met with me; understood my remodel requirements and was willing to take the job.  Scott's proposal was close to that of the previous scheduled contractor so I agreed to enter into a contract with him.  The time-frame for the job, after the cabinets were ordered and arrived, would be about 10 days.  I ordered new appliances and they were ready for delivery anytime they were needed.

I met with Amy at 41 Lumber who was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in choosing my cabinetry.  I also did the leg work to find the flooring and countertop.  Afterward, Scott ordered the cabinets and dealt with the flooring and countertop contractors.

Cabinets were ordered and arrived and demolition began the first week of Nov. 2014.  Carpenter arrived on schedule to start the demolition.  He prepared the area with plastic runners and hung plastic at doorways, etc to help contain dust, etc.  I arranged to be down-state for 10 days so the contractor would have free access to the house .  I expected to return in 10 days to a completed kitchen.  Wrong.  The demolition was done, the gas and water line had been installed and the flooring was laid and cabinets were in place.   No, countertops, plumbing, electrical, or installation of appliances.   It would take 2 more months to complete the project.

I have no problem with the quality of work.  But waiting 3 months for the job to be completed was very frustrating.  I believe the problem is that other than the carpenter, Northland does not have its own laborers.  I never saw Scott in my home doing any of the work.  I believe he is just the orchestrator.  The electrician, plumber, flooring installer and countertop installer were all independent contractors and my job timeframe was scheduled around the other contractors' schedules.  The electrician could  only do so much until the plumber came in (on his schedule) and then the electrician would have to return (on their schedule) to complete their work;  the plumber could do only so much and then he had to wait on the countertop installer (on his schedule) before the plumbing could be finished and then the countertop installer had to return to caulk get the picture?

Scott was cooperative, responsive and willing to please and the quality of work was what I expected.  The problem with my remodel was a time issue.  Scott uses reputable contractors who do good work and, accordingly, you wait your turn for their services.   In hindsight, maybe securing a large remodel company who has electricians, plumbers, etc who work solely for the company would have been the way to go to get the job done in a timely manner.

The project went great.  Ken is very considerate, neat, friendly, and does top notch work.  He seems to be able to come up with a creative solution for any problem.  The outstanding quality of the work is backed up with a pleasant philosophical attitude that may leave you with a life lesson or two (and that's the free part).
I have hired Ken in the past for big and small projects and would absolutely do so again.

We've been using Pat since 1983 and he is excellent. He has extremely fine attention to detail, is responsive, very professional and creative. His honesty and reliablity are unmatched by other contractors, an he always does exactly what he says he is going to do. I'd highly recommend his services.

IHS is a little on the pricey side but they have the best customer service around. Unfortunately, because of the price we went with someone else. However, they were very professional and were the most punctual and responsive company that submitted bids for our addition.

Menze has talented and dependable leadership. the entire project went like a well oiled machine, even coordinating different phases of the project to allow me to continue to rent some rooms well into the process. The job site was kept clean and presentable throughout the day and the entire property was gone over at the projects end.

Menze uses professional carpenters and other various trades men capable of getting the job done without constant oversight. This saved money. When a certain job required one man, they didn't send two.

All work orders were well spelled out in detail and when a change needed to be made, it was done in writing with my full envolvment and signature approving the new work. I felt perfectly comfortable not hanging around the work sight day in and out. When I came on sight I was treated with respect and professionally, never made to feel I was intruding or in their way. They never hesitated to contact me if something needed clarification or further discussion.

This is a well established company with an incredible depth of talent. They completed the job within the allotted time frame, their work was second to none living up to my expectations and the promises they made along the way.

At the end of the day, I ended up with a whole new circle of friends. These people care about the work they do. Every one of Menze's people are down to earth and realistic, they came to work with a sack full of "Good Dispositions."

Sure put a smile on my face.

Excellent from start to finish. I found Mr Switzer in the paper few years back. Highered him to do small repair construction jobs around my property. I was impressed with finishing detail. I have spoken with him on other project ideas and was impressed with his building knowledge that has been lacking with other construction providers that I have discussed the same project with. We had weather damage to our roof which gave me an opportunity to ask him to do higher level of work. The workmanship was excellant. He makes his rough work look like finished detail and his finished work is this man's trade mark. He gave estimates which included materials and labor. No cost bundling. He has good fund of knowledge of best materials for the job with options available to you. He had no problem producing proof of liciencure, insurance and workman's compensation. He has full hands on to your project. You are not highering a name with a remote crew doing the work.

This is not the first time I used Casual Construciton and won't be the last. Dave is very courteous and returns all phone calls promptly which is somewhat unusual in that line of work for some reason. His lead carpenter did a fantastic job from start to finish. Clean up every day, made living with a remodel job as easy as it can be when your basement is half torn apart. We wanted a tongue and groove cedar on the walls, new ceiling, flooring, lighting and updated pl\imbing in bath. We are very pleased with the way the job turned out.

They came in to put a very complicated roofing system on our log home. They jumped right in and communicated with the owner of the log home builder company to find out what was needed to build this roofing system. They worked very hard in the middle of the winter on our really tall house as well as steep roof in an area that gets a lot of snow and wind. They did not complain. They just suited up for the weather and got it done. They also did any work that was needed in and around the house. Due to being a log house, it took longer to do anything in and around the house and they did an excellent job! They also built our garage including put the roof on that and sided it with a cedar siding that they had milled in Escanaba and then pit it through the wood planer to make it ready to put on. They made and put up all custom trim that they found for us.They helped us order and install all interior and exterior doors as well as installed windows. They did an excellent job! I would definitely use them for all future work!!!

Our experience with the company was top notch.  They are professional, punctual, and very courteous.  We decided to put off the messy project until another time.
