Cabinet Making reviews in Hillsdale

    Direct Discount Countertops
We initially got this contractor through Angie's list. We weren't looking for a complete kitchen remodeling, but pretty close. We kept virtually the same design of the kitchen, but we wanted to replace the old cabinets and the Formica for a new fresh, modern look. We didn't do any plumbing, flooring or wall work and only did minor electrical work (moved a few plugs). Our biggest change to our old design was removing a desk area from the old design and turning it into additional counter space, an additional cabinet and adding a wine rack. Direct Discount Countertops was the second of two contractors that we brought in for estimates. The first contractor, Granite Transformations, was twice the price as Direct Discount Countertops. I'm not exaggerating - twice the price. Furthermore, Granite Transformations would only cover our existing Formica with granite and would only be refacing the cabinets. Dave (President of Direct Discount Countertops) proposed to replace the cabinets and our island (entirely) and install new granite countertops. We weren't too crazy about refacing and we went with Dave. Based on our interaction with Dave, as well as the good reviews on Angie's list, we didn't even get a third estimate. Dave was very down to earth, listened to our ideas, offered suggestions where it was appropriate and helped us put together a plan that my wife and I really liked. My wife did most of the actual detailed design with Dave and really liked dealing with Dave. He did not talk down to her like some contractors do. He was a very cordial and a polite person to deal with. Dave came out to our house a few times to finalize the project before he started. He never seemed to be annoyed to come out as much as we needed . Dave came to our house on a number of occasions, not only before we gave him the project, but during the project and after the project. That was one of the attributes about Dave that I really liked. Even though I gave him our final payment, I still had some adjustments to be done on some of the cabinets. Things you may not notice immediately, but you notice over time. I thought for sure it would be like pulling teeth to get him back out to my house. Not only was he very prompt and getting any issues I had resolved, he never seemed bothered or upset about coming back to our house (even though he was about an hour away). Like any home improvement projects, we had some hiccups along the way. The cabinets came late, the size of some cabinets were not exactly as the manufacturer stated, etc. Regardless of the issues, Dave took responsibility and got it taken care of. He did not put off blame on someone else and leave us high and dry. He took care of it. During the "construction", we had a number of changes we wanted to make. I never thought that Dave took advantage and tried to overcharge us. When we wanted to add something, his charge to us was fair and sometimes even less than I expected. Initially, we were going to get rid of our old cabinets, but as the construction progressed, we decided to move some of the old cabinets (along with some of the Formica) to the laundry room and the garage. We ending up reusing about 60-70% of the cabinets and I think he only charged me about $200 to move and install them for me - including using my old Formica and making it into a new workbench for me. I was so accustomed to dealing with contractors that were a pain in the you know what, that dealing with Dave was a pleasant surprise. I would highly recommend Dave and I intend to use him again if I need other work around my house in the future.
