I had an unusual problem - voltage between the house and the dirt / driveway. About 3 volts ac. This voltage was present even when the main breaker in the electrical panel was off. BPD looked at the problem, verified that I had stray voltage, added some grounding to the hot tub, and talked about some other possible changes.
I wanted a local electrician to look at it - I called BPD, listed in Haslett, about 15 minutes from me. Turned out that he was in Grand Ledge, more like 45 minutes than 15 minutes away. Anyway, he looked at my problem, added some grounding to the hot tub, recommended more grounding to the water pipes, and talked about some other issues. I decided he wasn't prepared to deal with the real problem. I found another electrician, who lived only a couple of miles away, with a more rural outlook. He came over, talked to me for 5 minutes, and told me to call the power company. Consumers Energy found that the neutral was broken on one of the poles, it looked like lightning damage, so the dirt was carrying all the neutral return. Consumers replaced the neutral and fixed the problem.
Service Provider Response
The reason why Angie's list said I lived in Haslett is because I recently moved my place of business, which I now just updated. I did find grounding problems at the clients house that were code issues, and I addressed them. It is not unusual to get a 3v reading on a meter when their is improper grounding and bonding on a hot tub and it's area. I am glad Consumers found a badly damaged neutral so that the client and household is safe. Not sure how an open neutral on a pole can cause a neutral current leak on the ground unless it is in the ground.? Right?
