Cleaning House After a Cigarette Smoker Moves Out

House Cleaning reviews in Battle Creek

    Merry Maids
Very well done. The problem I have with Merry Maids is that the 'regular cleaning' is only average is my estimation - the gals seem as if the devil himself is after them, they practically run through the house and do not do a thorough job. And the cost of just a regular cleaning is twice what I am paying now, and they are doing a more thorough job of cleaning. If you need a first, deep cleaning, perhaps you will want to use MM, but for just week to week cleaning, I believe they overcharge and are not nearly as through as they could be as they are in such a terrific rush.

It went very well. The ladies were punctual, very nice, had no problems accommodating our dog, and did a fantastic job of cleaning. They did everything we asked for and more. I would highly recommend Merry Maids!

    Modernistic Carpet Cleaning
When scheduling, I called their 800 number, and due to receiving service from Modernistic previously, all our information was already in their system. I was told the job would take about an hour and would be between $89-$119. The on-site folks would determine the space sizing and requirements of the job to determine the actual cost.
Our condo, which has recently been emptied of all belongings and furniture, total square footage is about 1,100 sq. ft.; our kitchen, bathrooms and Master Bedroom al do not have carpeting, so the only rooms to be cleaned were the Living Room/Dining Room, the 2nd bedroom and the small walk-in closet, and I believe the total square footage of the area needing cleaning was then about 500-600 sq ft total. The carpet is fairly new (3 years old) with no pet stains or other stains that I was concerned about, however I did point out a very small stain in the closet along the trim that looked and felt like it was an old water stain (from a previous repair on an adjoining bathroom), was only on the surface and should come out easily. The only reason for needing the carpets cleaned is because the new tenant/owner is allergic to cats, and we do have an older cat (who retired from behavioral problems and accidents previous to installing new carpets).
James and Dale from Modernistic came to clean the carpets on time, and were both professional. Because there was no furniture, the job went quickly and ended after only 30 minutes. The small water stain I had pointed out came out easily without needing to be treated. The cleaning job appeared to be thorough and complete.
Upon cashing out, I was told a total of $128 (I'm not sure if that was with tax and fees, and I may have even misheard). I told him I thought that was a little high (I had a misconceived belief that without furniture, I would get a pricing break - that was not true), but he told me the closet counted as an add-on (room? it's about 8'x6' so this is questionable to me), and the living room/dining room combo counted as two rooms because of the size (understandable). He found a $10 coupon and applied it and said the total would be about $120 after the coupon. I signed everything digitally and thought I would be getting a copy of the receipt electronically (I did not receive one). I was not happy to see the charge that cleared my account was actually $130.95.
I then called the 800 number and spoke with Tim to clarify the charges and get a copy of the receipts. He did clarify that what was charged was correct and broke out the fees in comparison to the quote. I also found out that they move furniture for free, so there is no discount for the home being empty - this would have been better learned when I originally scheduled for the service, so that is my own mistake.
All in all, I am happy with the work, but disappointed in the clarity of the quote versus actual charge, and the issuing of receipts. I also appreciate the on-site serviceman applied a coupon for me, but a little frustrated that I had to complain before it was mentioned.
As for quality, the technicians told me they have the best equipment, but I have no knowledge as to how well they are maintained or how they clean in comparison to other companies. This was the first time I had these carpets cleaned by an external service; we have cleaned them ourselves in the past, and it takes much longer to do on our own.

Missed lots of places when dusting.  Vacuumed around footstool, table,
etc. leaving dirt under them.  Worked a much shorter period than
contracted for, lost house key, never returned second key after being
discontinued.  Over all, poor quality work.

    Merry Maids
/Please be cautious about engaging Merry Maids located on Woodrow
Ave. in Battle Creek.  Although it?s been
a few years since they provided services for me, the owner, Martha Barlond,
A Compact Disk was not to be found after engaging Merry
Maids, but I couldn?t say for certain that it was removed by one of the
teams.  Excepting that and the Christmas
goodie issue (below), nothing ever was stolen.
Services were not as advertised.  Trying to get these folks to do a decent job
    of dusting was a battle.
I was told there was ?quality review? done on the teams, but
it was very rare.  Instead, I was asked
to provide the teams with input on their work.
Since the teams varied from week to week, and they normally came while I
was at work, I did not feel comfortable about personally criticizing these
strangers who were coming into my home unsupervised.
On a day that I was home when Merry Maids were scheduled,
they arrived early ? which would not normally be a problem ? but they sat in
the car in the driveway for about half an hour, which drove my dog insane.  This same team would not attempt to vacuum up
the live ladybugs that invade my home every autumn.  They left a note saying ?we try to vacuum them,
but they fly away.?  I have done it
hundreds of times, and it?s just not that difficult.
Another team decided my home-baked Christmas goodies left on
the counter were intended as a tip for them.
Cookies were taken in the footed cake dome in which they were
stored.  I got my cake dome back, but I
did not ask for the goodies to be returned, as I didn?t feel comfortable with
the idea of eating or giving them away after being handled by strangers.
There are plenty of other examples of why I would not
recommend them, but the last straw is that they destroyed my kitchen cupboards
and refused to take responsibility ? in spite of their ?guarantee.?
On days that I was home when Merry Maids were scheduled, I
noticed a routine of heavily spraying several surfaces down with cleaning solution,
then returning to finish cleaning the surfaces after the solution had time to
work.  One day after receiving ?cleaning
services? I noticed the lower cupboards had a strange film on them.  These were standard commercial cupboards that
were paneled and painted white.  This
means the wood was a type of particle board.
On the borders of the panels where the surface was nearly horizontal,
the wood was lifting, thereby destroying the smooth surface, and exposing
swollen particle board -- very unsightly.
Mr. Barlond came out to inspect the damage and repeatedly told
me that it must have been a result of something I did, because all of their
    cleaning solutions were thoroughly tested.
Although I told him the cupboards were fine when I went to work, ruined
when I came home from work, and Merry Maids were the only people with access to
my home during my absence, he persisted in blaming me for the damage.  The fact there are multiple cleaning solutions
tells me that there are specific solutions for specific surfaces.  What has been tested to work on porcelain is highly
unlikely to be suitable for painted wood.
The problem was likely a result of the ?maid of the day? spraying the
cabinets heavily with the wrong solution, and giving the cleaner plenty of time
    to take a toll.
Unfortunately, even though the cupboards were not even 10
years old, the same cabinet style was no longer available, so we had to replace
    ALL of the cupboards.
The Barlond?s may be merry with the proceeds of their
business (they also own a Merry Maids in Lansing), but this customer was not

    Merry Maids
They were attentive with scheduling and quick with getting us a quote. The house was pretty clean to begin with so it was hard to know how intense the cleaning actually was. However, I'm glad that all kitchen surfaces were sanitized and the bathrooms were scrubbed very well. The two women were polite, friendly, and efficient. They did use some product to clean the oven that ultimately lead to the smoke alarms going off while I was pre-heating it several days later. I wiped it down with a wet towel and did notice a slight film that came off. Of note, I was in the home at the time to meet several other contractors who were coming in the day they were cleaning. The team was able to work around me as well as the other contractors.

I spent $50 for that service and I think that they are quite reasonable. They are quite trustworthy, but they don?t clean very well though, but will take care of it if I ask them to. I would absolutely use them in the future.
