Howard from AFC provided a detailed proposal that was not the highest nor lowest price. Lowest and highest proposals had very little detail. Howard planned the work to my specifications where other were interested in doing things their own way. When the work was done Howard billed the work at a price lower than the estimate because it took him less time than estimated. I have no doubt others would have billed at the higher rate.

Price and quality were top notch - this was a very expensive job, but other contractors wanted $22,000 but wanted to convert the old radiators.  Bob's was the only one to offer new radiators as part of the over all job at no "extra" cost.  They also set up zoning, which is great for controlling costs in our giant house.
We were very happy with the work crew, their professionalism, and also their flexibility in working around our schedule.  I have no reservations, and would hire Bob's again for any job.
    But...
We had a few communication hiccups.  First, they said they wanted to do the conversion in early July, but that came and went with no word.  I had to reach out to them in mid-July and the was schedule for late July.  I got married in early August.  Not really the best timing, but waiting to do it after the wedding would have been worse.
The house in in Maine and my now-husband was there, but I was in Virginia for work and trying to manage the conversion long distance.  Despite having the fact that I was the person to arrange the bid, signed the contract, schedule the work, send the check, etc. they never called me or checked in with me, they only talked to my husband.  This would have been fine except they showed up with radiators that were the wrong size, and somehow convinced my husband I had approved these radiators, even though installing them would have required shimming them out from the wall, and then they would have stuck up above the windowsills by 4 - 6 inches.  I never would have approved this, and only found out by chance!  When I called Nate, the service manager, he was quick to get it sorted out,  but I don't think it should have ever happened.
They also installed two radiators in a room that had only one, and no one checked with me on the location of the new radiator.  It's now in a very inconvenient location and we can't even turn it on.  (You could blame my husband for not checking with me, too, but I feel like I should have been called: he and I weren't married at the time and the house belongs to me, not to him or to us jointly, I was paying for the work, and my name alone was on the contract.)
These are, in the grand scheme, fairly minor things, and I think would not have been issues had I been there in person and able to talk directly to the installation crew.  I recommend them without hesitation; I just encourage the customer to be proactive in communicating.

Everything they touch the furnace something breaks or malfunctions.  Not sure why but repeat trips are covered except parts which is good.  At the end the furnace always runs great but expect multiple trips.

When I suddenly had no water on a Tuesday morning, I needed a plumber quick. Brian Bickford was highly recommended by another trusted professional so I called. He came after 5 p.m. and checked the switch, the power and anything else that might have caused a loss of water. No go. So, he said he'd be back to install a new pump for me by Thursday. Again, he and his assistant worked until after 5 p.m. getting the old (1992) pump out. At that point, he told me that it looked as though I could get by with just new wiring if that was my choice. I appreciated the  honesty and decided that since the pump was 21 years old and looking pretty sad, I'd go with the new one. The next day, they were back and things were done quickly.
Once the pump was installed, Brian showed me exactly how to bypass my water softener while the riled up water and bleach worked it's way through, explained how to check to be sure the water was clean and ready to use, and gave me his bill. I expected it would be far more than it was.
I've already recommended Bickford's Plumbing and Heating to a friend who frequently needs work at her home and apartments and I'll be glad to recommend the business to others.

The two plumbers who performed the work were accomplished and hardworking. All work and estimates were accurate timely and done according to my wishes. I will hire them again in a heartbeat and feel fortunate to have found a good plumber in my new hometown.
