Tree Service reviews in South Portland

  • Kevin Martell came by my house to give me a quote for removal of a dead/dying tree and removal of some brush. He said it was an easy job but charges a minimum of $200 so that was the price. When I asked when he could do it, he said "I'll come by some time next week." Fortunately, I work from home but I imagine that that would be a pretty inconvenient answer for most people. When he finally did come by I reminded Kevin that I had the brush to remove. He must have forgotten about that because he told me it would be an additional $20 ($220 total). Not being the confrontational type and still thinking it was fairly reasonable I did not say anything about the agreed upon $200, though in hindsight, I certainly should have. They did a pretty good job of removing the tree; it was quick and they were efficient. When I noticed they were packing up to leave I went out to check their work and a portion of the tree was still there. It was a small (6 inches in diameter) trunk. When I went out and asked him about it, he said that he could not take it because the tree was right on the property line and that trunk was on the neighbor's property. I was outraged and noted that he had said no such thing when he came to give me the quote. He had no answer to that. I told him that I would speak to the neighbor to get permission to take it down and let him know so that he could come back to remove it. Eventually I spoke to the neighbor and got permission to remove it. I called Kevin up to ask him to come by to remove the remaining tree and he told me it would be an additional cost! I told him that it was unacceptable and that I expected him to finish the job for the agreed upon price. He refused. I ended having to rent a chainsaw and finish the job myself.

  • The job is completely done.Davy was great, response from the 1st phone conversation he was here to evaluate the situation suggested options, together husband Mark as well said the thing to do was remove it. Davy returned a week later to grind the stump. Davy did a good well cleaned up job. Davy himself presented very friendly, professional neat and clean. Yes we would hire him again and recommend him.

  • Peter contacted me immediately that he would be late due to an issue with a crew member.  He introduced me to all the crew, who were nice and courteous.  Peter had to work on the tree stump majority of the time because it was so large and close to the house, so had to be chain-sawed. They trimmed some tree limbs, landscaped a portion along the driveway and planted the arborvitaes. Happy with the work.

  • Colby was punctual and pleasant. His review of the work to be done was thorough even to planning ahead for temporary clearing of work pathway. The price was about $500 more than another company's quote, but I feel this quote was more correct for work needed.

  • After almost 4 weeks I received a proposal. I had to have some trees cut down before I moved forward with any landscaping so I was delayed in getting back to this company. I finally did respond asking that the company break down the prices on the proposal since I was having several things done. When I hadn't heard back from this company In more than 3 weeks I emailed them. Their response was they were busy but had come by the house (this is a second property I own and i was not in town and was not aware they were on my property) to look at what needed to be done. When they responded they said they didn't like what I had said in my email ( I questioned how professional they were) and they said they didn't want to work with me and to find another landscaping company.

  • Our cat had gotten out when some service people were at the house. He had never been outside before, and was missing for almost 48 hours. While walking around calling for him on the 2nd night, we heard him howling in a neighbor's tree. There were 3 very old and very large trees that were all intertwined, and, although we could hear the cat, we couldn't see him in the mess above. We called the fire and police department, and were told that they do not get cats out of trees. It had been raining for 2 days, and was going to be raining all night, so we were very worried about the cat. T.W.'s ad in the yellow pages indicated 24 hour emergency service, so we called them at about 8pm. They called back almost right away, and were at our house within 45 minutes of the initial call with a bucket truck. Tom was diligent and patient, as it was difficult to locate the cat. When he did find him, the cat was less than cooperative, but Tom persevered and finally got the cat down.
The service was awesome. Tom went above and beyond, even in just acknowledging that this was a legitimate emergency, unlike their typical tree emergencies. He was friendly, professional, and respectful, as was his colleague.
I would hire them again (for real tree work, hopefully!) in a minute. Thanks, T.W. !!!!!!

  • I reached McCarthy tree service through Better Business Bureau's website. Mark McCarthy called in response to my email. He came to my house the next day to assess and provide a quote. He was able to do the work the next week, on the day I had requested. He arrived early with all the necessary equipment and manpower. I had two trees worked on -- one huge, and one large old silver maple. Neither tree was on my property, but together they formed a canopy over my front yard which grew closer to my house each year, and providing unwanted shade. McCarthy Tree Service gave me sunshine. Both trees looked so much better after selected limbs were removed. Each large limb was carefully lowered to the ground. The limbs were sawed into sizes that could be carried, and my neighbor was pleased to have the wood. As the limbs were being dropped to the ground, my rhody, picket fence and powerline went unharmed, even though they were all in the line of fire. A lot of care was taken during the cutting, lowering of limbs and with clean-up. I am one very pleased customer.

  • I came home from work and was blown away at how nice my yard looked. I really had no idea it could look that good. They had done everything I knew needed to be done and so much more that I didn't even know needed to be done. For example, I have a slate walkway that I thought was about a foot and a half wide, turns out it's actually three feet wide, Matt and his team uncovered the extra feet under the overgrowth. Matt cleaned out all corners of my yard and actually made my yard look so much bigger. My dogs were thrilled to be able to go into spaces they had never been before under trees that were previously overgrown. I have a pool and they did an excellent job cleaning beds around the pool and making sure nothing ended up on the pool cover. They do my mowing as well in the summer and I can always count on them to make sure to keep lawn debris out of the pool. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with my spring cleanup and the services they provide for mowing in the summer. I appreciate the level of professionalism and respect they show my property and I recommend Prime Cut to all my friends and neighbors.

  • They are great! Ira came right out the day after I emailed him and left the estimate in our mailbox. We had to do this for an insurance issue and it had to be done by a certain date. He said it was no problem. They showed up the day they were scheduled and took about an hour to trim and dispose of all the tree limbs. They then cleaned up our driveway of debris afterwards

  • From the time of the estimate until the time the work was complete things went well. Three fairly large maple trees were taken down. The work started one day and was completed the next. The company left some of the wood as requested. They left it in managable lengths. We had requested this in order to use it next year for firewood. The remainder of the trees were removed by the company. The yard was left in good condition as they raked up and took away all debris. I would recommend them to anyone needing tree work.
