Siding reviews in South Portland

Renewal by Andersen of Portland ME
Jim did everything possible to accommodate my concerns as the project progressed. The house had old leaded-class windows from the 1920s. HEoM workers worked with me to retain the old windows (which I was simultaneously restoring in the garage) by fitting energy-efficient picture windows behind them on the outside. Jim searched around for exactly the kind of porch-skirting and extra-long siding that we wanted. He coordinated work with an electrician and me as we installed pipes and wiring for a central-vacuum unit at the brief time while sheathing was exposed but before Tyvek and siding went up. We also coordinated installation of downspouts with my work on drain tiles and catch basins. And Tim and John (the first-rate siding team that Jim contracted) thoughtfully notified me of cavities behind the house's sheathing that had no insulation, giving me time to stuff some back there before all was covered up again with new vinyl siding. Andy Davis is the foreman at HEoM, and is the most gentle, unflappable, highly-skilled home contractor that I have ever met. Their usual way of insulating replacement windows had been with fiberglass. However, when I asked that they use foam insulation instead, the immediate response was, Of course! (My recommendation is that others do the same with any contractor, given that it results in a tighter, quieter house.) As always, HEoM workmen kept communicating with us as our wishes evolved during the course of the project. HEoM is best know for its work in seamless gutters. Prior gutter work on the house had been done in a way that at one point channeled water under roof shingles and that placed a downspout behind a porch's center columns. Jim came up with elegant solutions to these problems, and did so in a cost-effective way that did not require replacement of all our gutters--solutions that retained the original gutter style but with downspout color that matched our new siding. Such consciousness of detail was evident at all times during the project. For example, one of the siders suggested that a strip of PVC moulding would add to the porch's appearance. We took his advice, and could not be happier. The unknown truth about HEoM is that the company has professional skills far beyond gutters and windows. In fact, if I were to be thinking about building a house, Jim would be the first person I would speak with. Oh, yes. And they stand behind their work! A window sash and 4 screens were replaced no-questions-asked, when we noted damage. They repaired a strip of vinyl siding that had cracked after the first winter, and then over a year later Andy fixed a replacement window that was malfunctioning. Each time their response was immediate!

    Fortin Construction, Inc
We obtained several estimates. Although Fortin was not the cheapest, we felt that they were the best fit for us. We could not have hired a better company. They prepared the plans for what we wanted to do and they obtained all necessary permits. Fortin's estimate included anything and everything that was needed to take this addition from start to finish. It included the excavating, concrete walls, garage pad, framing, electrical, plumbing, roofing, siding, drywall, painting, finishing work and loaming and seeding. Every subcontractor they used was top quality. Every crew that showed up at our house was extremely professional. Fortin's employees work hard and they care about the product they are producing which is evident in the finished product. Fortin has specific crews for specific jobs - framing crew, siding crew, roofing crew, painting crew, finishing guys, etc. Each crew specializes in their specific area. Construction lasted 60 days from breaking ground to completion. It was 60 stress free days. We never had to worry about anything, they took care of everything. The communication was amazing - we always knew when people were coming and what they would be doing. We could not be more pleased with our addition and feel that it was money very well spent. I would not hesitate to call them again for another project and highly recommend them.

    Rich Exterior Solutions
My quote was for removal of vinyl siding and the original wood shingles underneath, tyvek house wrap, residing with new vinyl, and disposal of old material.  The $18k estimate is well out of my price range right now, but Nick was very helpful and gave me several other options for cost reduction.  If finances allowed, I would use Rich Exterior Solutions for my residing, based on my experience with Nick - he was professional but friendly, and didn't talk down to me based on my being female.

    Quinn's Installation Inc
From the very first meeting with Mr. Quinn, we felt comfortable.  The job we were undertaking was major for us and we wanted to make sure we did it right. During the first meeting we went over our "wish list" asking for everything we wanted.  He came back with a detailed quote for all the three levels of siding installation he could do.  We made our decision to put in the high end siding to keep our house looking like the shingles that were on it from the 1920's.  We also wanted a tri color scheme (siding, trim, and an accent color). He brought us color choices so we could choose the ones we liked, even returning when one color was not available in the shade we wanted so that we could choose from the selections available.  At no time during these meetings did we feel pressured into any fast decisions.  When the work actually started, the two workers were incredible!!! Each day they arrived on time, worked throughout the day and at the end of the workday cleaned up the area entirely.  They were friendly and each morning told me what their plan was for that day.  Each day, when my wife came home and she would look over the progress they would chat with her, even showing her what they had planned for the special trim which they fabricated on site.  We began to know them as the "A team" as they were far and away beyond what we could have ever imagined for professionals.  For the three weeks they were onsite we never once were concerned with any aspect of their work. While wrapping up the last few days they worked diligently to finish before a big family event we were hosting even though we assured them we would be fine. Outstanding people.  When they left on the last day, we knew we were going to miss their daily banter!  Upon completion of the entire job, Mr. Quinn stopped by to go around the entire house checking each detail of the job before he gave us the final invoice.  We would recommend Quinn's Installation services to anyone hoping for the best product installed by the best people.

    Quinn's Installation Inc
We were given a date of delivery of products. All came on that date. We were given a starting date and approximate finish, but, they started and finished right on dates. The men were respectful of all our property. The finished product was beautiful and the price was the price. We had already used them once before on another home seven years ago.

    Fortin Construction, Inc
They gave an estimate in October 2003 and began work in November.  This eventually ended up in arbitration because they put a lien on the property.  The job was worked on sporadically from November 2003 to May of 2004.  There was never a schedule provided ahead of time and the workers were constantly changing.  Some were completely inexperienced.  The quality of the work included squeaky hardwood floor installation, a window that was not fully attached and moved when pushed upon, a doorway with a greater than 90 degree angle on one side, broken building materials provided by the owner, etc.  I am glad to have joined Angie's to have an opportunity to voice my still steaming dissatisfaction.

    Averill Construction llc
This is a story of an appointment not kept.  The phone number for Averill Construction on Angie's List is incorrect.  However, after a bit of Internet searching, I found (207) 799-8723.  After reaching Jeff Averill at this phone number, we set up an appointment for us to discuss a siding job.  He did not show up.  Okay, to err is human.  I am not someone to give up on someone just because he forgot one time.  So I phoned him in hopes that we might reschedule, and left a message to that effect on his phone.  After almost 2 weeks of waiting, he still has not returned my call.  Maybe something catastrophic happened to Jeff (or his cell phone)...  If so, I might return to make revisions in this review of his company.

    BOB'S COASTAL CONTRACTING
During the first two weeks when Bob had his crew everything was quality work done quickly. After his crew walked out on him, everything went down hill. Because of the amount I had invested in the project, I kept quiet for the most part because I didn't want him walking out on me, which he appears to have done anyway. This was to be a 3 week project that has lasted 4 months. His indoor work was far less than acceptable. Never trust a portfolio - call and get references!
