  • In all honesty, this was one of the worst situations in dealing with a contractor for work on my home. This was one of the finishing
    touches to a yearlong home renovation project and I was left with a very bad situation.
    I'll start off with the communication issues then to the actual work. On July 24th 2013 I called the office of Sam Patterson Paving for an appointment to have an estimate done on my driveway. A nice young lady answered and mentioned that her father was completing a large paving job a couple towns over and could not make it for an estimate until Saturday July 27th. She then took down my contact information and I made an appointment for Saturday. When that Saturday came around, I was home all day waiting for them to show up but they never did. Frustrated, I waiting until they opened on Monday the 29th for an answer of what happened. Another older woman answered the phone and explained to me that they ran late on their job and that they were sorry that they missed the appointment. She mentioned that they will be done early today and that they will be by my house for an estimate after 4pm. So, at 3:30 I left work early to meet them for an estimate and to my surprise, once again they did not show up. Now even more frustrated, I called on Tuesday morning the 30th and spoke with the original younger woman about why they missed another appointment and stressed my frustration about waiting around two times for them. She asked if I wanted to make another appointment and that she will call Sam immediately to make sure he can commit to a time.
    Within 20 minutes I get a call from Sam Junior who has committed to a 3pm appointment later that afternoon of the 30th. I once again left work early to meet him and he finally shows up on time for the estimate. The estimate was simple and I stressed a couple concerns I have with drainage and water in the small area between my garage and home. I have had to add a drain by the local building code office to collect water runoff from my driveway and roof and stressed that any water must be pitched towards the drain (common sense also) in order to work properly.
    Once the estimate was done, I was given a verbal quote and a business card. He mentioned that they were busy and could do the job in about 2-weeks. I asked to be notified when they plan on doing the job, as I would like to be there when they do it. He said that he could give me a one-day notice and I said that would be fine.
    One week later on August 6th I get a phone call from my wife saying that Sam Patterson was at the house and said that they had an appointment cancellation and asked of they could pave today. I mentioned that the pipes were not complete for the drainage and that I needed a couple days to finish it up. He agreed and mentioned to my wife that they have put me on the schedule for Friday August 2nd.
    Friday August 2nd comes around to a nasty rainstorm. I was not expecting them to pave in the rain so I went to work as normal. Later that afternoon I receive a phone call at my job from the older woman from Sam Patterson Paving. She mentioned that with the heavy rain that they wouldn't be able to make it out to the house for an estimate. I mentioned that I wasn't on the schedule for an estimate today; I was on the schedule to have my driveway paved. She apologized for the confusion and said that my driveway will be rescheduled for Monday afternoon. I agreed and told her that it is imperative that I am there on Monday and to please call me to confirm. She took down my cell number and said that they will call me.
    On Sunday evening, the day before my appointment on Monday the 12th, I get a phone call from Sam Patterson Junior at 6:35pm. I work Sunday evenings until 9pm so I missed the call, but Sam did leave a voicemail with a message confirming my appointment for tomorrow afternoon and that if there is a problem for me to call him back. I have saved the voicemail, as it will come into play in a moment.
    I go to work on Monday the 12th and notify my boss that I will need the afternoon off to be home while my driveway was paved. At 1pm a left to head home and wait for them to show up. At 2:33pm I called Sam Junior to see what time he plans on arriving and he did not answer, I left a voicemail asking what time he will be arriving as I was not sure of what time the afternoon meant to him and that I was home expecting my driveway to be done.
    At 2:40pm I receive a phone call back from Sam Junior that did not go very well. He explained to me that he called me on Sunday evening and that since I did not call him back, he did not keep me on the schedule for that day. Now I'm furious that his voicemail specifically said that "if" there was a problem to call him back, besides the fact that I am on the schedule for Monday to begin with. He continued to gain an attitude as I expressed how frustrated I am and the amount of time that I have wasted and lost by continually leaving work to stick to the schedule that they have made and continually not shown up for. He kept saying that I should have called him back trying to push the blame that is was my fault that they weren't there even know that I have the voicemail that proves that was not the cast at all. I mentioned that this was the third time they have missed and appointment and the third time I have left work and lost money trying to meet with them. His comeback was only that I was wrong and that
    they only missed one appointment and this time it was my fault.
    After another minute or two of argument, the only conclusion was to have him come first thing tomorrow morning to do the job. Very frustrated, aggravated, disappointed and annoyed I said that I will be home and do not be late for your 8am appointment.
    Tuesday August 13th at 7:32am they show up to pave my driveway. I wait for Sam senior to arrive on the property so I can talk to him about my concerns with water drainage. He reassured me that all of the water will be pitched off the far side of the driveway and gave me a couple pointers about how to lie out my driveway edging when I do it in the future. I told him that the town code office has required me to have a drain installed in between my house and new garage in order to get a permit and that I need the water to flow towards the drain. He nodded and said okay.
    The driveway install seemed to go relatively smoothly. I have never had adriveway done before so it was nice to see how it was done. I did not sit outside and stare at them working as I know how annoying that is as a company trying to do their job. I was upset that they drove their large roller across my brand new lawn and parked it without asking, but I got over it.
    Over the next few hours, I let them do their job and I came outside as they were cleaning up their tools. To my surprise, they had their heavy roller parked in my new garage. I was not happy with that at all as I'm extremely sensitive about the concrete and any damage to it, first my lawn, now my brand concrete floor. The second thing I noticed is that the roller they used for the driveway must had sat for a while because the first pass it made over the driveway left a 3 foot wide by 28 fool long rust streak down the driveway and into my garage. The third part that I noticed is that they did not pitch the part of the driveway between my house and garage towards the drain like I asked. I did say something to Sam senior and he said, "How much water could possibly go in that area, it'll be fine. Anyway that drain won't handle that much water anyway." So, as a passive person, I let it rest for the
    moment and continued to write the check for $2500. I paid him and went back inside as they finished the job and removed the roller from my garage.
    Once they left I went outside to check what they have done. The rust streaks are really noticeable and takes up a 1/4 of the brand new driveway, it was rusty water that came from the rollers and continued into my garage. There is tar-stained foot prints on my garage floor and the new rusty water was starting to dry and stain the concrete. The pitching of driveway near the drain
    is obviously not correct and there is a small portion near my porch steps that will feed water directly into my foundation.
    I don't know what to do at this point, as I am so disappointed with their work. I'm not happy at all and feel that I have been taken advantage of after saving for months to be able to afford this driveway to be done. Their communication has been so bad between them and I that I don't want to communicate with them further but I know I need to because of the bad job that they have done. After 4 days, the streaks have not been washed away as I hoped for after a good rain, and my garage floor still has dirt that they did not clean up after the rust/water/dirt dried.

  • The first challenge was deciding if we should do an inside fix or and outside fix. Intercoastal gave us great advice and an honest assesment of what really needed to be done. He said our drainage system was fine, we just needed to find where the pipe that it connected to drained to daylight. I had already spent weeks trying to do this same thing, but he found it on his first visit (it ended up being across the street in my neighbor's yard). Because it was not our property, we could not dig it up there to fix it so again, Intercoastal gave us great advice and suggested we just rerun the pipe into a drainage area in our own yard. This was the perfect fix and it has drained BEAUTIFULLY ever since. The company owner's wife was a GREAT communicator letting us know when they work would be done. The guys who actually did the work were great as well. They did alot of digging onour property but somehow put everything right back to the way it was before the digging ... including my favorite hostas that had to be dug up and temporarily moved. They very carefully dug them up in clumps and then set them right back when they were done. I was very very pleased. Most importantly though, they were very honest and up front with us and were comitted to doing only what it took to fix the problem and not any extra work to make a buck.
