Hiring to trim trees? A how-to guide

Follow these tips to find a tree service that will clip with care and leave you with dollars for the rest of your landscape.

Tree Care and Services

Trees grow slowly so you can't afford to make a mistake by planting them in the wrong location or overlooking something that puts the tree at risk. Tree care is something most homeowners can do on their own, but an expert should be called if a tree is showing signs of disease or if limbs need to be removed.

I would strongly suggest sending your neighbors a certified letter stating that, per your earlier conversation, you consider this tree to be a hazard due to its proximity to the power lines.  Then, when and if something bad does happen, you will have a record of having informed them of it and they won't be able to say "we didn't know."

You say the county has told you it is the neighbor's problem.  Did you contact the local electric company?  They should care very much about the situation.

I would also recommend taking lots of pictures showing the proximity of the tree to the wires and that it is obviously dead.

Dead trees do sometimes stay vertical for a very long time, but it sounds like a tense situation for you.  I understand your desire to not inflame the situation, but it doesn't sound like there is anything more you can do that won't have the potential to do so.  So it becomes your responsibility to look after your own interests in the most reasonable way possible.

For my money, never ? I do a walk-around yearly in the summer (when easy to work on and before the heavy fall winds in our area) and look for trees with dead crowns, losing branches everywhere but at the crown, brown branches (evergreens) or leafless branches, leaning trees, trees with visible rot, trees with major bark loss, trees with seriously damaged or eroded away roots, etc. If none of those symptoms, then I call our 100 or so trees good for the year.

Of course, the bigger the trees and the likelihood of house damageor powerline loss (especially in winter) if there is a major branch or tree fall comes into play also. I trim and cut my own trees when needed regardless of size, so my level of confidence in being able to handle anything comes into it.

If you are worried about one or more trees, call an arborist to check them out - then I would say unless there is evidence of damage - ESPECIALLY leaning trees or major branches not leafing like the rest of the tree - I would not worry having them looked at more frequently than every 10 years or so.

The tree fell on a Saturday night and on Sunday we started to

Gouldsboro Tree Services Provider Name Locked
contacted us very promptly on the Sunday, came to our property to assess the work, and then completed the job the following day. He was incredibly responsive, personable, and professional. His crew were very efficient and left our property in really good shape. They were even able to do a partial repair on our fence to keep the yard secure for our dogs. We were extremely pleased with the work that was done.

They called the morning of the scheduled appointment and cancelled. I called and emailed to reschedule the date but never heard back from them. I used them once before and they were great. Something has happened with this business and it isn't good. Call them up and all you get is a voice mail. Email them and you are lucky if you get a response at all. I don't like to write bad reviews and very rarely do so but when a business stands you up and doesn't respond to you, I think the public should know.

The work itself was fine. He did a good job.
He was a "no show" 3-4 times. Multiple attempts to communicate with him failed.
He said he was having trouble connecting to his Angie's account and reading his messages.
After he finally arrived...about 6 weeks after our original appointment was missed, he was apologetic and said he had been very busy, in addition to the communications issues with his Angie's account.
If you use him, make sure his issues have been resolved, and assure him that you too are busy.

cut my trees and did an ok job.
They did not drill the trees correctly and did not put the oak wilt solution into the trunks properly. I told them to take there canisters and leave. They did not charge me.

In both cases the workers were very efficient, on time and did an excellent job of cleaning up after. They took precautions to not ruin the lawn w the heavy equipment.
The reason we had all this tree work done was that on August 28th at 6pm we were hit w a micro burst and had huge trees that fell on the back corner of our home ...... surely not the best thing to happen.
Gouldsboro Tree Services Provider Name Locked
quickly responded to our phone call that evening when we described the damage we received from that sudden storm. Came out the next morning, assessed the damage and cost to get the trees removed. He was very professional and communicated well with us during the whole process. Several other "tree services" had also come by and offered their services at a much higher rate.
The trees in the front were getting old and were taken down in September at our request as a preventative measure to avoid potential damage from future storms.

They showed up when they said they would and did the work as requested. They worked hard and completed a difficult task in about 6 hours. Some of these trees were very large and close to my house so I was somewhat concerned - but they were pros. No problems recommending this company. Good work at a fair price.
