Pet Care & Health reviews in Brunswick

  • We ran the New England Rabbit Sanctuary for unwanted, abandoned & abused rabbits in Boothbay & Wiscasset, Maine from 1999 to 2005. Boothbay Animal Hospital was the first place we went for veterinary care for our 10 companion rabbits; later for the multitude of health issues the shelter animals had or developed. The health needs of rabbits are very different from a dog or cat, and many veterinarians receive little or no training on their care, despite the fact that rabbits are the third most popular mammal pets.
The BBAH is a walk-in clinic - no appointments necessary, although surgical needs are scheduled in advance. Everyone who works there, from the receptionist to the vet techs to the doctors are of the highest quality, both in their medical abilities & their treatment of the people who come in with their ailing companions.
Although they were relatively new to treating rabbits, they quickly found the resources they needed to take on the treatment of so many animals that we brought them - including learning what they were lacking in their education. They would open in the middle of the night if we had an emergency, and would often stay way beyond their closing time until every waiting client was seen & everyone given as much time as was needed.
We had to close the sanctuary for financial & health reasons in 2005. A local animal welfare officer helped us with the cost of euthanizing those rabbits who could not be adopted or taken by a rescue group due to their serious medical needs. The BBAH had started a fund of their own to help people who had difficulty paying for their pet's care, and since they knew our situation, provided services for us at a largely reduced rate or didn't charge us at all. Their prices were absolutely reasonable anyway, but this was a boon for us in those heartbreaking last days of the Sanctuary, when we desperately had to find placements for 120 rabbits we cared for at that time.
In closing, I would recommend the Boothbay Animal Hospital to anyone needing veterinary care. I will review the head of this animal hospital, Dr. Dean Domeyer, separately, as we dealt with him most often & have details about him on an personal basis.
I also have a caution: the Boothbay Animal Hospital is connected to the Coastal Veterinary Care clinic, located a few miles away in Wiscasset, Maine, both practices originally founded by the same vet (looks like he finally retired, or I'd write a bad review on him!) I DO NOT recommend this clinic, especially for rabbits. Theirs is a totally different attitude in both professionalism & courtesy toward people.

  • We caught her on short notice - first time we've used her services. She came over, met the 3 cats and agreed to come over for the 11 days we were gone. She emailed us pictures and let us know how things were going on a daily basis. The cats were very happy and she gave us peace of mind. We've always had a neighbor watch them before, but we couldn't find anyone close for this trip. We tried Angie's List, saw she had some good reviews and gave her a try. We will hire her again in the future.

  • I used this groomer because my regular groomer could not fit my dog in for an appointment when I needed one. I had used
Dawgtpia 2 one other time when I couldn't get an appointment at the usual place. I took my dogs shot records with me the first time and was told that they did not need to see them. I had my dog trimmed and bathed, it was winter and I did not want to clip his fur short. That trip was fine.
This time it was July and hot and I asked for the dog to be clipped leaving a couple inches in length. My other groomer has always done this with no problems. I was told that they would do their best but that clipping to a couple of inches was difficult. They then asked if I wanted the dog's tail "shaved" as well. I reiterated that I did not want the dog shaved, but clipped to about a couple of inches length and then said that I wanted the tail done the same as the rest of the coat.
My daughter picked the dog up for me, so I did not see him until later that night. The dog's tail was lovely, trimmed nicely, but the rest of the dog was as close to shaved as you can get. Beneath his ears, and under his legs he had razor burn, the woman who clipped him had told my daughter that he had a skin tag that was nicked. Maybe so, but this was more than that, this was razor burn that had left his skin raw.
I figured, lesson learned and we'll never go back. I did not call at that point because there was nothing that could be done to fix it. A week later when these areas had not healed and he had started to chew at them, I took him to the vet. $94.80 later I have a dog on steroids and antibiotics because these areas of razor burn had become infected.
I called Dawgtopia 2 and got a woman on the phone to whom I explained the problem. She asked me to wait a moment and I could hear her talking to the person who had groomed the dog. She was asking the groomer if she wanted to talk to me and "defend" herself. Then she got back on the phone (I never did talk to the groomer, evidently she did not want to talk to me). I was asked if these areas could be hotspots and if there had been mats under the ears. I told her that there were mats under the ears but not in the other areas and that this was a result of infection from razor burns as diagnosed by my vet. I told her that I was not asking for my money back, (which was not offered) but that I wanted her to know what had happened so that it could be avoided for other dogs.
It should have been a red flag when a groomer and doggie daycare does not care about an animal's shot records, even when offered by a client. My other groomer has always insisted upon them even after years of knowing my dog.
In fairness, the first time that I took my dog to Dawgtopia 2, the experience was fine, but after this experience I won't go back.

  • My dog had never walked with anyone else before.  After much bonding, Annie was walking with my dog three times a day.  This is rather impressive because my dog is nine years old.  When it got very hot, she thought to get a fan from my upstairs and set it up in the living room to cool the animals down.  She cleaned the cat boxes twice a day, fed and watered the dog and cats, and brushed/petted one of my cats.  I got nervous after a few days in Ireland.  I called her and left her a message, and she looked up the hotel's email address to relay to me that everything was fine at home.  This really helped with my peace of mind.  She is smart, dependable, compassionate, and very reasonably priced.

  • I can't say enough about either of the vets, the tech, the reception staff. They were all really friendly, professional and knowledgable. The office was very clean. They were thorough and did not rush at all. I set up a date for surgery, I was concerned as this was the first thing I had used the vet for. The vet met with me before and after the surgery. I was able to ask questions and again never felt rushed. The surgery went well, the vet again met with me when I picked up my cat and took his time. They called several times to follow up and encouraged me to call if I had any questions or concerns. I also got a card in the mail, thanking my cat for choosing them and telling us to call if we needed them. This was a perfect experience. My cat is 14 and I treasure him and I am so happy to have found this vet.

  • My dog wasn’t keeping well for while and I took her for a checkup, she was putting on weight all over and I took her in for that. They did some tests and that cost me $200 but I was happy for everything that they did. The last time I saw was the owner, Dr. Horgan and before that I had seen somebody else. I was very happy with both of them. He was very good. He was giving me the information on her breed and he tried to talk me into changing the dog food and I have done that. He was very helpful and I'm going back to them.

  • They are excellent.  We had another dog that died in February that was 12 and a half.  They were very good in his last few months before he died.  The price is on par for veterinarians.  They are expensive no matter where you go.  The quality of their work is very good.  They were compassionate and supportive in taking care of our aging dog.

  • We have used them for years, they know us and our pets. They know what is normal behavior for out pets so when I bring in a stick pet they know something is wrong, I don't have to repeat the dog or cat's history everytime I go in. When we see our vet at local road races she knows who we are.

  • It went very well overall. The doctor explained all that he did with a careful description and photos of her mouth. We have used this vet for yearly check-ups and shots for six years. It's a very expensive place, but we think our cat receives very good care.
