    Doug Smith from Doug's Tubs pushed my patience to the max trying to get satisfactory results. He was really nice his four visits to our home. However his end result and attitude scored poorly. He promised a one day process with results we would not regret yet it ended up consuming three days dragged over a month. Each day he worked on the tub more mistakes mounted which he did admit.  I tired to be understanding as we are all human. However, he arrived an hour to three hours late three different days, without calling to explain. His promise of meticulous prep work and clean up is also false and a joke. Instead his process was unbelievably dirty and frustrating. Sanding dust and fumes permeated every room that didn't have a door to close. His hose he puts out the window marred the painted windowsill. Twice he didn't bring his bucket and sponges and asked for ours. The first day he didn't "tape off" completely like promised therefore overspray stuck all over the new tile floor and the entire transition strip between the room and down the hallway floor, and it coated the plumbing and tub safety rail. Also two different days his paint covered hands left paint all over both sides of the door knobs for us to clean. It's important to know, each day he left he thought he had completed the job satisfactorily. So I was shocked at his mess and results. When I inquired about all the overspray and door knobs he didn't care or offer to clean it. Instead he matter of fact told me to use Acetone to clean it up. To his credit, the last day he did clean the door knobs and tub safety rail although it took me hours to clean the rest and I had to invest more money in special product and sponges. Here are the problems I encountered with the actual tub/shower starting with day one. A light uneven spraying left gray shadows all over and four quarter sized deep dark spots. He returned and also saw this as inadequate. On his second attempt, in his own words, he tried to short cut things and over sprayed. He didn't use the spray gun so multiple runs and drips ran down the wall into the tub, along with leaving two hand swipe marks on the shower wall and tub rim. His thirds visit, he re-sanded some and used the gun which did make it look evenly coated but now the surfaces are all different textures. But more importantly, he forgot to give the tub the nonslip surface and when he left there were five new drop sized chips on the floor of the tub and one on the rim of the tub. Since the tub is bright white these light gold chips stand out. (gold was the color of the original tub) How does that happen to a brand new freshly painted tub? I'm thinking it was the Acetone he brought to clean with. I suspect the chips may have been caused from drips of Acetone when he whipped the hand rail down? I could be wrong though. At this point continuing his service is frustrating because I've had to postpone other contractors but reluctantly I call him again to discuss the chips. How do I know if using the tub would ruin it further? Anyway, he was totally shocked to hear about them and sincerely asked to come look at the tub. That way he could better explain what happened.  So he asked if he could call in two days, to schedule a time that second evening, to come see the chips. I agreed however 14 days came and went before I heard from him again.  At this point it's Sept. 2nd. The first day he started work for me was July 30th. Thirty five days and he hasn't completed his "one day" job! Now get this, on Sept. 2nd his wife called to schedule a date to start on our master bathroom. I snickered and asked if she were serious which annoyed her. I wasn't trying to be smart, instead I was dumbfounded.  I explained I was looking for another contractor because her husband had stood me up 12 days ago and that Doug's job still hadn't been completed. I started to fill her in on our experience but she cut me off, telling me I seemed overly picky. She said they would reimburse our money but when Doug heard this he took the phone. His first sentence was nice but he ended with arrogance and a cocky attitude telling me he wasn't returning my money. He stated I could contact a lawyer and then he laughed at me, telling me he had invested too much time and money on my job. I reminded him if he had upheld what he promised on day one I wouldn't expect anything more from him nor would he be in this predicament. That angered him. He accused me of being unreasonable, too picky, and uppity for expecting him to show for work on scheduled dates or needing to return my calls when he promised me. During this conversation he admitted he wasn't good at returning calls or holding appointments but said he didn't care. He said I wasn't top priority and if he felt he had something else more pressing he would choose that job over me. Even though he stated that with nasty attitude I agreed with him but suggested a phone call would have been courteous. Sarcastically he laughed and said he wasn't going to change his ways for me and proceeded to explained how this profession made him lots of money therefore he could run his business any way he saw fit and didn't care what anyone thought of him.  He even mocked me in a childish tone about cleaning the knobs and overspray. I told him he was the most unprofessional person I've ever met and that I would be posting negative comments on line about his ethic and service. This didn't faze him in the least. Our conversation ended with him using a snide tone, stating he didn't care what I posted or if 30 other people complained about him. He had plenty of work since he was one of only three tub restorers in Maine. Then he told me he never wanted to hear from me again.  Is this guy full of himself or what?
