Cabinet Making reviews in Sparks Glencoe

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • I'm not even sure where to start with this as just about every step of the way this company failed.  The issue is that they sent out a new salesman (related to the owner) who has little experience in this industry.  Because of that, he ordered the wrong cabinets, told me that I could use my existing sinks and failed to include finishing on my shelves in the quote.  The end result is that what should have been a 2 week job estimated at $13k wasn't finished until 5 months later and at a cost of over $16k.  I still have a cabinet that is defective -  the owner of AES told me to take it up with the company instead of handling it himself.  I also had them back to fix shelves that collapsed after 2 days - there are still shelves with the same issue but they don't want to fix them (he told he if it fails within 5 years he'll fix it).   As well, I was forced to buy all new sinks and faucets because salesman told me that I could use the existing hardware (wrong).  All on my dime.
The most bothersome comment that the owner made to me was 'You signed off on those cabinets' when I mentioned that the problems were related to them ordering the wrong parts.  In other words, he believes that it was my fault that they ordered the wrong cabinets.  The reason that I hired them in the first place was to make sure that it was done correctly to begin with.  I was also charged an additional $1,200 for staining 3 bookshelves and 3 shelves.  Again, his response, was 'you signed off on it'.
I own 2 schools and a home and have used many contractors and I completely understand that problems arise.  What is disheartening to me about this company is how absolutely unapologetic and condescending the owner is.  Not once did he apologize or take ownership for their errors.  In fact, when I brought these issues to him he basically told me that 'it didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked but now its done so how are you going to finish paying for it?
The only redeeming factor here is the 2nd carpenter who fixed the 1st carpenter's poor job and fixed the kitchen issues despite the inaccuracies in product, measuring and more.  Had it not been for him this would have never gotten done.
Overall, this was a very stressful and unpleasant experience.  No doubt I will never call on AES again and I'd suggest that unless you know exactly what you need down to the last screw that you not also.  What a sad experience and this is only a small part of this entire fiasco.

  • Kevin has a knack for design, color and materials, overall.  We bypassed using a kitchen design center for our planning.  He just came over and mapped it out, working together with me.  He had an overarching sense of vision, a listening ear for my preferences, and an understanding of what would be needed in the way of detail and functionality. If I suggested something that didn?t sit right with him, he let me know his opinion, and generally his instincts/experience showed through.  He was right on target with steering me away from mistakes as well as having creative ideas and making making good suggestions.  He even had a great eye for paint, and kept me from choosing colors that would have been too dark, and in the end the colors I chose for my main living area were perfect, with the effect I had wanted.
Kevin is an excellent communicator, and touched base with me regularly and conscientiously.  I always knew what was going on, how long things would take, and received immediate responses when I had questions.  This was true from the planning phase and all the way through the project --  not a quick short project, either.
Kevin has an excellent relationship with the individuals, supervisors/teams that he brings to the work site.  They are all good folks, who aim to please and were readily responsive to me as the homeowner, as well as to Kevin.  He treats them right, they are appreciative of that, and it shows in the way they conducted themselves and in turn treated me -- cheerfully and professionally.  I felt safe and confident with them coming, going and working in my home. Everyone took care in the work that they did, and pride in the quality of the results.   There were constant checks to make sure that the quality of the workmanship was the best, and that any small decisions that needed to be made along the way were given appropriate attention.
There was attention paid to things that were not done correctly originally in the house, and Kevin fixed a leak in the roof, additionally.  And after the job was done, good attention was paid to the punch list and anything that I needed that arose afterward.
Kevin is pricey. Pricier than the competition on the first bid.  Reasonable in cost for additional work added on after the initial contract.  I suggest paying good attention if you find yourself adding on additional projects to your original plan, and making sure those costs are mapped out clearly before giving the nod to additional work, so that you are clear and not surprised in the end by a larger than anticipated price tag, however.  Kevin may be pricey, but I felt comfortable with my large project in his capable hands at a time of transition in my life when I needed to be able to trust that things would go smoothly, on a good
schedule, with no major screw ups.  In fact, I give Kevin high scores on all those things.  I also give him credit for treating his employees fairly and that was part of what I paid for.  Good workers, working for a good and fair employer -- everyone very conscientious and accountable.

  • His prices match the quality of work. He was very good about working to help you maximize the design so that your pieces will fit into the space you have allotted. I love the quality of all the materials he used.
