We have a large yard with complex and varied watering needs. Hydra Tech did a masterful job of planning the layout and the installation crew was exemplary: prompt, efficient, courteous, hardworking, and precise. Couldnt imagine a better experience.

They gave me a reasonable quote for the work that I was looking for. It was very good the first time. His name was Mike. He's very knowledgeable and very helpful with his recommendations and whatnot. I came across this company through Angie's List. I would give them an A for all the categories.

    Baumann's Lawn & Landscape
The project went extremely well.  The contractor showed up exactly on time, devoted enough manpower to complete the job in a single day, and the workmanship was expert.  The owner was on site for much of the work and responded quickly to any suggestions by us.  In some cases the firm provided services that were beyond the strict scope of the contract but at no additional cost.
We will definitely use Baumann's again and would recommend to any of our neighbors.

Once I am going to start the project I am going to let them come back and do it. They took their time as far as walking through how the work was going to be done and how much each project will cost. They talked about where I can save money depending on the part of the seasons or part of the year I asked them to do the work. There is an old irrigation system around the yard that needs to be dug up, some terrible amount of grass and some grading that I want to get done. Jeff came out and informed me that if I want to do the irrigation then I should do it towards the end of the summer because they don’t have to plant sod or put down seed in the Fall, which would be a much cheaper approach and I thought that was very generous, because some of the other folks would just give the price which is why I used Angie's List. Jeff was a really nice guy, took his time and walked through the yard with me. He pointed out some things and gave me some pointers that I can work on in the mean time which was really helpful. He was a really nice guy, friendly and punctual. He was very responsive and got back. I went through some friends and asked a couple of other landscapers to come out to give an estimate; they weren’t the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive.

    Haynor's Garden Design, Inc.
We were fairly pleased when the job was done and since then, it takes a garden a while to look like what it's going to look like but we had several die-offs of things and installation issues regarding the watering system that we weren't very pleased with. The person who did it was sometimes good about coming out but he would always come out when no one was there and my mother couldn't interact with them. She is eighty-eight and lot of this is third hand, long distant but right now, she is not loving the way it is looking. We are not sure that the watering system he put in is working. We were given to understand that if you water things, everything is going to be definitely alive and it should be blooming when they should be and so the area has pretty much struggled to look great. So when we talk she does not say that wow everything is looking so pretty, thank you, I am not getting that but I am not there to really assess it. She said that she has kind of given up on him and we are passing out the guaranty period but if after guarantee period if your yard isn't looking nice and you are plants are dying, you are not a very happy camper. She has said outright within the last month that if we do anything more she doesn't want to go back there. He would respond but she was always frustrated because she wanted to explain what her issues are and then she would find some evidence that he was there, like a hose left out or something.

    Hydro-Tech Irrigation Co
Our sprinkler system was old when we purchased the house in 1992.  Since then we've had periodic maintenance when there was a problem with the system and had someone come to close it every winter.  The system was operating so inefficiently (not covering the entire yard, heads buried) that we decided it was time for an overhaul. Hydro-Tech was the first company we called for an estimate and I'm delighted we decided to use them.
Jeremy Space, our estimator, spent about two hours at our house making sure he had all of the details.  He promptly provided a written proposal that outlined all work to be performed.  He called Miss Utility prior to the work and had them mark water, gas and fiber optic lines.  The team arrived on time and performed their work quite well.  In order to relocate heads they had to trench in several places but they were careful to remove the sod and replace it as they found it.  Walking across the yard I couldn't even tell where they worked.  It's only when I looked at the yard from a second story window that I could make out any trenching.

    Tillerman Gardens LLC
I was referred to Jesse of Tillerman Gardens, through a friend. He promptly came to our house for an estimate. We had many large projects in mind and after our meeting I was really excited to start working with him. He was very attentive, as he listened to me drone on about all of our ideas, questions and concerns. I am not very good at visualizing projects, and I don't have a creative bone in my body, but I am also VERY particular. Aside from the straight forward and practical projects, I loved all his design ideas and the final project exceeded even my expectations. I love it, my husband loves it and I'm pretty sure all of my neighbors are jealous. My yard looks amazing, and it seriously could not have been a more delightful experience. Jesse and his crew were completely professional and kind, but most importantly (for me), he is a man of integrity. Total project time was about 3.5 weeks. We had a few days of unruly weather, and he was even communicative about that. I wish I had more yard, and I really want to see his business thrive. He's decent and without a doubt in my mind, deserving.

    Tillerman Gardens LLC
Initially, my impression of the owner, Jesse Karpas, was very good. I sought four bids for the job and he was not only competitive in pricing, but also very responsive throughout the bid process, trying to help bridge the gap between my budget (originally $50K) and the large amount of work I needed done. Combined with the positive reviews here on Angie's List, I decided to move forward with Tillerman. We eventually reached agreement on a contract of about $57,000, but ended up with a total cost over $60K, which included several unanticipated change orders. This despite the fact that he stated it was a firm-fixed contract and that it was not his style to create a lot of COs once work began. Yeah...
Frankly, I wouldn't be so bothered about the COs were it not for the shoddy workmanship, particularly with the hardscaping and driveway, as well as the additional fees I incurred as a direct result of Tillerman's errors. For one, I received repeated citations and fines from the city and county due to sediment control violations, tree removal without the necessary permit, and disturbance of land areas in excess of what is allowed without a permit. Given that Jesse grew up in the area and has been doing work in my city/county for many years, you wouldn't think I would have encountered such problems. Nevertheless, I am facing $3000 in fines due to these issues, which is directly due to his improper work yet falls on me as the homeowner (why the government holds the homeowner responsible rather than the contractor is something I'll never understand, but anyway...).
Fines aside, the retaining wall, walkway, and patios he built have had repeated problems since initial completion. Thank goodness - if that's the right way to look at it - we had two heavy rains during the completion of the entire project that illuminated the problems (settlement issues that caused the wall to collapse in a couple areas, standing water on the patios, drainage issues, sink holes, etc), such that we were able to get them fixed before the final invoice was due. Nevertheless, and despite my repeated requests for a better resolution prior to final payment, I am still stuck with part of the retaining wall leaning forward, which not only concerns me (and the county inspector) about the long-term integrity of the wall, but also resulted me in having to pay nearly $1000 more than I should have when I had a safety fence installed in front of the wall (the fence needed special anchoring in front of the wall because the wall itself couldn't support the fence due to its lean). Again, I appealed to Jesse to fix the wall before the fence installation, but he declined, stating that the wall "is as straight as it can get." Nice.
Because my family needed to move into the house and it was clear that I wasn't going to be able to get much further with Jesse, I reluctantly paid the final invoice per our contract, despite this and a handful of other known outstanding issues.
Well, as it happens, I was in the driveway this past weekend (only a few days after paying the final invoice) using a leaf blower/vacuum to get leaves off the asphalt, and in several areas numerous gravel pebbles kept getting sucked up into the vacuum, such that they nearly ruined the blade and forced me to stop using it. It turns out Jesse's subcontractor for the asphalt neither applied a layer of sealant to the driveway (apparently another $575 if I want it done), nor heated the surface layer sufficiently to ensure the pebbles melded together. As a result, I now have several patches on the surface where there is loose gravel, which is quickly degrading the surface, and right before winter no less.
I of course contacted Jesse - twice - seeking assistance in resolving the matter, but my appeals went ignored for five days - until of course I threatened writing this review among other means of retribution in a third email. He quickly responded to that email of course, stating that he would come out within 48 hours to assess the situation and then get back to me. 48 hours passed and nothing. I contacted him once again - just a short while ago - and he said he came out and saw nothing wrong. Of course!
Well, needless to say, that was the final straw. This review is the first step in my seeking retribution, and I am happy to share with anyone my experience in more detail as I begin to take steps to recover all of the money I have had to pay unnecessarily due to his poor workmanship and/or errors in judgment (I didn't even mention the severe damage he did to one of the panels on my garage door when he was excavating the original driveway, did I?).
In the meantime, if I can figure out how to post photos of the work I am describing to show that I am not exaggerating or mischaracterizing the workmanship, I will. I don't immediately see how to do so, but I'm pretty sure I've seen photos of work on other reviews on Angie's List.
Long and short, beware of work done by Tillerman, at least for larger, somewhat complex jobs. It is clearly beyond Jesse and his crew's ability.

Jesse and his crew were a true godsend, not only did they leave me with a most amazing result, but they were way cheaper than the other estimates I got.  I was a bit reluctant at first to pick Tillerman Gardens, since I try not to normally go with the lowest estimate I get, for fear that I won't get the quality I want, but boy was I wrong.  Jesse was very open and honest from the beginning, willing to walk me through the smallest detail of what the job would entail, and was patient no matter how many questions I had initially.  He actually turned out to be remarkably accurate with his predictions in the end.  His crew started bright and early the day he promised and they were actually all done a half day before they had estimated completion.
I could tell it was a veteran team that had good chemistry the way they worked together so well.  Each day I would come home to see beautiful progress, first the patio in the backyard, then the new paver walkway, and finally the brand new and gorgeous paver driveway.  I actually really felt guilty driving on it since it looked so nice!!!
The real quality came in the way that the whole job turned out, the new patio, walkway and driveway just blended so perfectly with the new landscaping that framed the pavers.  Their selection of trees, shrubs and plants paired with the mulch they used just made the flagstone pop and my curb appeal went up a million percent.
I'm already planting seeds with my wife to see what else we could do to improve the yard, and when I get the green light I'm calling Tillerman Gardens for sure.  I'm soo happy with the result, especially for the amount I paid, and the look from my jealous neighbors afterwards was just the icing on the cake!!!

The gentleman that we work with, his name is Ryan. He listens to me. He offered suggestions and he was very flexible as far as changes that we wanted to make. His price was very attractive. He came up with some good ideas that we haven't thought of.
