    Design Depictions Structural Engineering, P.C.
Our 40-year old home has developed several interior and exterior cracks over the years. I hired Design Depictions to understand their causes and make sure we do not have a structural (e.g. foundation) problem before addressing the cosmetic issues. Michael spent far more time than I expected discussing, reviewing, and analyzing these issues. One of the cracks formed in my daughters room shortly after we renovated the house in 2008. The architect and builder were not able to diagnose the issue on this non-weight-bearing wall, but Michael came up with an explanation very quickly based on the location of the wall relative to the joists. Its so nice to have this mystery finally solved! Michael followed up the meeting with a detailed analysis describing the causes and remedies for the cracks he observed. I couldnt be more pleased with Design Depictions. I will definitely recommend and use their services again.

    Kitchen & Bath Depot
I didn't hire him after speaking with him on the phone. He doesn't do a design and THEN source the product. He only sells the products. That's where he makes his money. For me personally, that takes away all the objectivity. That's why I didn't hire him. I do give him kudos for being honest about this.

    Studio 76
Studio 76 remodeled my condo with creativity and attention to detail. The design that Mr. Penati came up with to redesign the interior of the condo made a remarkable improvement to the layout. The attention to detail and workmanship of his staff are exemplary. His staff are very professional and do an thorough job. Making design choices is a fun process but it can also be stressful, especially when you and your partner have to come up with a single decision. Mr Penati provided his expert guidance to inform our design choices so that we could make the place feel like ours while still being attractive to increase resale value. I recommend Studio 76 whole-heartedly.

    Premier HD Construction LLC
Rick and Jim at Premier are talented professionals. They were thoughtful and meticulous in their work and offered insightful advice as well as creative solutions to unforeseen problems. While they took a little longer than estimated, the end result was worth it. I would highly recommend them.

    DMV Kitchen & Bath Inc
Short version: I've never worked with a contractor who is more flexible and willing to please than DMV, highly recommended.

I found DMV through Angie's list, gave them a call, and arranged for them to come out to discuss my project. Cemmy arrived on time and we proceeded to go over all aspects of the project. Although clearly someone who is more on the sales side of things he took plentiful notes as well as measurements.  He sent a first draft quote in about a week (right in line with what he said he'd do). I indicated that I was interested in moving forward so we scheduled a follow up visit where Cemmy brought Javier over as well to do a more thorough quote. Javier was extremely knowledgable in all aspects of renovation/construction and was able to quickly identify which areas would be tricky and how best to address them.  As I had expected the revised quote was higher than the original due to Javier?s better understanding of exactly how much work would be involved and our mutual agreement that pulling all permits for this type of project would be the best option.  We then met at their office to sign a contract and pick out various materials.  Although the contract covered the big picture work there were still a number of smaller details to be worked out to which we agreed to both be reasonable about.  Javier and Cemmy assured me that their main job was our satisfaction and we?d work out any details as they came up.

Work started on time and we were introduced to Maynor who would be doing the bulk of day to day work.  For the next 6 or so weeks we saw Maynor and friends from 8am to 6pm Monday through Saturday.  Communication with Cemmy continued on picking out items and finalizing details, Javier stopped by a few times a week as needed to oversee work.  Maynor did a great job doing the work with various specialists dropping by when needed for electricity and major plumbing.

In my mind the one thing that separates a good contractor from a great one is how things are handled when issues and changes arise (and issues and changes will always arise).  Here are few examples of things that came up along the way and how they were handled:

    - In picking out fixtures and such after the fact I chose a number of things that I knew clearly where more expensive than DNV could have reasonably had allowances for in their quote.  In a some of those cases I even explicitly mentioned that if they needed me to cover the difference to let them know, but in each case they covered it entirely.

    - During removal of debris they accidentally broke the globe hanging over our stairwell.  They contacted me immediately apologizing and asking for exact model number so they could replace it.  They purchased replacement and handled installation.

    - One night a pipe that they had been working on earlier in the day sprung a small leak and was dripping on to the floor below.  Javier had given me his cell number in case of any issues so I gave him a call.  He answered his phone on the first call and asked if we needed to have someone sent out immediately (was about 8pm on a Saturday night at that point), I told him I had contained the leak and it could wait until morning.  He had a team to fix the leak there 8am the next morning (Sunday).  They also addressed the minor damage caused by the leak.

    - When working on the design of our closet to laundry room conversion Javier pointed out that the design as it stood would leave a good bit of space to the sides of the laundry machines hard to access.  He suggested moving the double closet doors and installing a new third door next to them.  I agreed it made much more sense.  Javier went ahead and did it the way he suggested which included a good bit of work to move the door and purchasing a new door all at no additional cost.

    - In designing our bathroom vanity layout I failed to consider how the mirrors aligned with the cabinets and sinks below.  Nothing had been installed yet but everything had been purchased.  Cemmy agreed to change the cabinets for models that would allow everything to be better aligned at no additional cost.

    - During rough-in inspection the inspector wanted an engineering report done on some of the I-beams to verify the support added to them was sufficient.  DMV covered the full cost of the engineering report.

    - When hanging the vanity mirrors it was clear that the dark color on the mirror frames I?d picked out was no where near the color of the wood on the cabinets (last time I ever pick a wood color from an online photo).  Cemmy went ahead and returned the mirrors and after doing a considerable amount of research to find something that would fit into the space and match the color without any luck offered to build custom mirrors in exactly the size needed for our configuration.  Looked perfect and again done at no additional cost.

    - The method of laying the small square tiles in our shower floor clearly showed that one of our walls wasn?t straight.  In walking through with Javier I jokingly asked if he could do something about my house being crooked.  He obviously couldn?t but he wasn?t satisfied with the manner in which the tile was laid, he said it could be done better to minimize the visual appearance of the crooked wall.  He then had the team tear up the entire shower floor and redo it from scratch.  It added a few days to the project but resulted in a much better looking finish, again at no additional cost.

The two things to take away from all the experiences is DMV repeatedly did whatever needed to be done to make sure we were happy and they did it all at no additional cost.  We did not have to spend a single penny over our original contracted price even though there were numerous changes done along the way.

Overall the way DMV does business with Javier overseeing the job and doing high level design; Cemmy handling contracting, logistics, and ordering; Maynor handling day-to-day execution from demolition through finishing touches; and occasional specialists where needed is pretty much a perfect mix for home renovation work.  It provides both consistency and oversight.  And the fact that they do it at a reasonable price and then don?t nickel and dime you after the fact just makes it all the better.

In the end the real question is if you?d hire someone again and for DMV I just did.  Javier, Cemmy, and Maynor just started a new project on my house this week and I?m already thinking up projects for them to work on when this one is done.

    Manion & Associates Architects
Tom and Melissa worked closely with us to capture our needs and desires regarding this dwelling for my then-92 year old father who was relocating here from the mid-west.  They guided us in our expectations regarding costs, helped us navigate some very specific neighborhood requirements and expectations, worked with us to secure quality contractors who kept the price point within budget, and oversaw the entire construction process, from architectural conceptualization to conservation tree trimming to final local government inspections.
Both Tom and Melissa were very easy to work with.  We had specific goals in mind regarding this dwelling, and Tom helped us see beyond the moment and into probable future needs.  Glad he did: through his guidance, the house continues to meet the expanding needs of my now-95 year old dad.

Yoko Barsky, Deco Design Studio, LLC
Yoko spent many months going over this small job, designing and redesigning until I was completely satisfied. She listens attentively, incorporating my ideas and desires so that the final design is really what I was asking for. She made excellent suggestions and guided me away from what would have been a couple of poor decisions (without being insistent- when I decided I really wanted a sink that she thought wouldn't be best, she was fine with that). She has great connections with suppliers, contractors, etc., and accompanied me to several showrooms to help me select the hundreds of items that went into the final construction. She has become a friend.

    SIGNATURE KITCHENS ADDITIONS & BATHS
To begin, my wife & I have made it clear to Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths that they can show our completed kitchen to any client who needs to see the quality design, cabinetry & craftsmanship that they offer.  We reviewed several kitchen & bath contractors based on reviews from Angie’s List.  We contacted three potential contractors and ultimately chose Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths. We did so based upon a visit to their professional showroom on Gude Drive, our confidence in the designer and their business model which is all work done by their team members.  My wife Victoria had a design in mind and wanted to work with different colored cabinets (onyx and white) as well as a dramatic granite top finish.  She had a good idea of what she wanted and worked very closely with Joe to make the design a reality.  During the design process they were able to work together to come up with what has turned out to be our dream kitchen.      Our home was built in 1990 and as it turns out the walls are not straight and the floors and ceiling are not level so when the time came to do the installation, the installation team was challenged but we were able to make it work.  Our total project was a bit over $100k which included modification outside of the kitchen, new hardwood floors throughout the first floor and painting on all three floors. Unlike most kitchen and bath companies Signature is a construction company ready willing and able to take on all aspect of our remodeling project.  Gary Case the owner of Signature and also the project manager was very good to work with, he listened to us and was responsive to our desire for a high quality finished product. It was clear that the he wanted not just to complete a great project but to end with a solid relationship with a happy customer. When we encountered issues he came to our home and we were able to come up with a mutually agreeable means to resolve them to our satisfaction. Prior contractors we have used would not have entertained our requests or would ignore our interests. Projects of this size always encounter some problems, issues which must be resolved as they crop up, so selecting a company with whom you can build a relationship and get the project completed to your standards is critical:  we found Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths to be that company.

    Mark Crowe Cabinet Maker LLC
We initially did not plan to have custom cabinets and was at first looking for a kitchen designer and planner. Mark answered our ad and we interviewed many people but his attention to detail and expertise really set him apart from the others. Because he actually makes the cabinets, he understands the small intricacies and details to creating beautiful cabinets. He met with us several times and helped us with designing the kitchen as well as finding the right appliances, and the right person to tile our backsplash. We have worked with many contractors in the past. Mark is punctual and follows through with what he says he will do and when he will do it. We started the process two months before we gutted or old kitchen and got our new one installed. Since my husband worked as the contractor, Mark helped us with coordinating our contractors so our kitchen was done in 3 weeks. Although initially we were going to go with Omega cabinets, we are so happy that we got our custom cabinets with Mark. Since he makes cabinets, he could fix any issues with things that wouldn't fit but luckily,he measured so well that everything fit perfectly. His cabinets are not the cheapest but that is because they are true quality and workmanship. We were very satisfied with our end product. We absolutely recommend Mark to everyone who is interested in getting new cabinets in a new kitchen. We also have recruited him to do our laundry room as well since he did such an excellent job.
