Needed a new computer board for our furnace...diagnostics took a little while but a new board seemed the only solution. New board took minutes to install once they determined the issue...but quite pricey.

    TriState Home Services
Paul arrived on time and was very friendly and professional in his mannerism. Unfortunately, he either did a lousy job at diagnosing my problem, or he intentionally tried to pull a fast one on me. Let me explain what happened. I started off making suggestions that my freon is probably low or something. In hindsight that was a bad idea. He checked the furnace first and told me my filter was very dirty. It was dirty, and I had a spare and we replaced it right then. After that, he went outside to check the unit, coolant levels, etc. He said the unit's levels were okay and would look further at the inside unit, but I noticed he was checking the wrong unit and corrected him (he checked my attic unit not my main floor unit). He acted innocent "oh I thought that was weird..." and checked the other unit. When he checked that unit, he said the freon level was zero and the line had no pressure. So, he began to sell me on things. ****, he even looked at my water heater "oh, that doesn't look good, you should replace that, we do plumbing too" and yet the water heater is totally fine. He said he could do a leak test for $400-500, but he claimed 90% of the time the leaks are at the coils "due to rust." We went inside and he showed me my coils, which were a bit rusty. Because this is an R22 unit, he said replacing the coils and refilling the freon would be about $4000, and I'm probably better off getting a new system since R22 is not supported anymore. I contemplated this and decided I would let their sales rep call me to talk business. However, my intentions were really to get a second opinion and look up this rusty coil business. So after he left and I paid the reasonable diagnostic fee of $109, I researched rusty coils as causes for freon leaks. Emphatically, that is NEVER the cause of a leak and rusty coils is very normal due to condensation around the coil. At that point I called another companyEric Smockand had them come out for another opinion. The next part is the best... Eric Smock's technician Dan came out and checked the inside unit and found everything to be completely normal. He checked the outside unit and the freon levels and....tada, the levels were totally fine. But the unit was not kicking on....he found the disconnect breaker unplugged and hidden inside of my unit! He plugged it back in and everything was fine. I don't know if TriState intentionally tried to trick me into a new system by playing on my early assumptions that there must be a leak in the linemy total foot in mouth situationor if they are incompetent and can't read their gauges correctly. But, my filter was dirty, I'll give them that...that was obviously the only thing wrong, which was suppressing my cool air from coming out fast enough. Don't use TriState! Give Eric Smock a call, they are great.

Dan arrived and was very professional and friendly. He immediately discovered that my filter was clean and asked if it was replaced before or after I noticed problems...good attention to detail. I had replaced it after I noticed problems because it was very dirty, but also after a family friend came to look at the unit to see if it had any electrical issues. After Dan checked the furnace inside and found nothing wrong, he checked the unit outside and immediately found that my disconnect breaker was pulled out and hidden inside of the unit. The family friend left it out, so the unit wasn't going to kick on. After he got the unit running, he checked the freon levels which were fine, and he said everything looks to be good. The system was producing cool air once again...turns out it was just the filter, only I hadn't replaced it until after the system was messed with, so I couldn't tell that it was an effective fix. Thanks Dan!

It started with a small leak in our well, by the next day water was gushing from the ground, flooding our backyard and seeping into the basement. I called two other company's emergency lines with no response. I then scoured Angie's list for someone else to call. By the third call, I found this company. They were the only ones who could come out same day.
They were here in an hour, quickly assessed the situation and fixed the leak. They were polite and cleaned up after the job was done. I really appreciated their efficiency and speed.
This company is now part of BGE Home Products & Services.

It took Scott 5 minutes to figure out the problem. He had the correct replacement part in his van. He installed it and the AC was working again. He then did additional checking and cleaning before wrapping up. He kept me apprised of what he found and what the cost would be to fix it. We've used Smock HVAC before and would definitely use them again.

    Lowe's Air Duct Cleaning
Bruno was an amazing help and very knowledgable in addition to being very personable.  He explained everything he was doing every step of the way and gave us heads up on things to look out for post-service.  He also helped us get a stronger discount on the whole house service; since I only purchased a single system cleaning off of Angie's List and I had two systems, he worked to get us a 40% discount on all of the remaining services, which was a $364 reduction in cost.
I'll use Lowe's again for sure.

Eric Smock Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.
Eric and his team showed up on time, and they did an outstanding job. The team had a tricky job, removing the old unit and installing the new in a finished basement, it took them almost 3 days to finish both attic and basement. The team is careful, detailed oriented, organized and very clean. I knew Eric Smock is not the cheapest company out there (hence the c rating on price), but a few $'s extra to get the job done right for such a big investment, is worth it. The new system is working great, and living up to the recommendation.

We have used the company for yearly maintenance program on my old unit, and have nothing but good experience. We will continue to use them to maintain my new unit.

I have a service contract with them. I have one for plumbing and another one for heating. They have done a lot of work for me. They come out twice a year to check out the plumbing and heating. I've been using them for years. I feel like they are overpriced, but I haven't been able to find anybody better. I tried another plumber last year and it didn't work out. They messed up the job the first time and they came back. They were supposed to return to finish the job, but they never called me back again. I feel like I'm stuck with Van Sant Inc. I'm not in love with them, but I feel like they are the best I can find. I haven't been able to find anybody that I could be happy with.

Don Hoffackers Air Conditioning & Heating
In attempting to remediate a mysterious mold problem in our  finished basement, we called a mold expert in. One of the remedies he suggested was installing returns in the HVAC system. Whoever had finished the basement had not installed them. Hoffacker's was so great to work with from the start that we didn't call another company for a competing bid. To save us money on such a relatively small job, they sent their lead technician, Steve, who lives near us so he could stop by for the estimate (and later the work) on his way home, saving call charges. We liked Steve immediately; he was clearly a pro. He even came by a second time, between the estimate and the actual work, to look at work the drywall guy had done and make recommendations for a space to be left open. Steve came with two other men to do the work; both very nice as well. As it turned out, the duct work didn't run the way it looked like it did, so he had to make a different return than one that had been planned. It looked like it was more work to do it this way, but Hoffacker's didn't increase the charge. They also installed a thermostat for us.
