Air Duct Cleaning reviews in Indian Head

  • First they called and did not have the correct address so they had to push my appointment back a few hours. When they got there they tried to get me to pay for other services and I refused. I could not understand him because his accent was so heavy after he inspected the chimney I did not understand what he said was wrong with my chimney.

  • The young man who provided the service called in advance to confirm his arrival time and arrived as promised (at the early end of the arrival window).
He was polite, professional, friendly and even removed his outside footwear before entering our home.
He asked to see all vent locations and the furnace area.
He explained exactly what he would be doing, showed the equipment he would be using and how the cleaning system worked.
He spent about three hours, as advertised, to complete the cleaning process and cleaned up each work location.
He also made recommendations concerning air filters and used his Smart phone to look up and show me a better ceiling vent option to make changing the filter easier.
This is how I expect a home service to be conducted.
This was our first use of an Angie's List provider. Thank you.
  • I researched many companies.  Some of them only used a shop vac to clean the ducts.  This company (Right A Way) said they used a negative pressure system and special brushes.  The person who answered the phone said they clean all ducts, including the flexible ones.  I took them up on the Angie's List special offer.  I was able to obtain an appointment within a week.  The technician arrived on time and he looked at my air handler in the basement.  He said he'd have to cut holes into the ducts to clean it out.  It looked like that had already happened in one location (a metal plate was covering it).  I was hesitant, but said to go ahead.
The problem started when he asked what type of ducting I had upstairs (two-story house).  It was the flexible ducting.  Without looking at it, he said that was a problem.  He said he had special brushes for the flexible ducting, but it might tear the ducting up.  It had happened to him once before and he said he could not take responsibility if the ducting was damaged.  He wanted to clean all of the hard metal ducting (the first floor) and skip the flexible stuff (second floor ducting).  I told him I wanted all of the ducting cleaned.  He said he'd have to call in for approval and his company would call back shortly.  In the meantime, he was going to go to another job in town, then come back.
I never received a call from the company and he never returned.  What the company promised and what he was willing to do were two distinct things.  It ended up being a waste of time for both the company and me.

First I called and made the appt after I purchased the Groupons.  It was for WHOLE HOUSE DUCT CLEANING and FURNACE INSPECTION for $49.00 each.  It included the cleaning of 1 return per unit.  I have 2 units in my house so I purchased 2 Groupons.  They said they would honor both of them on the same visit.  I confirmed that $25.00 extra would be applied for any additional returns outside of the one per unit. (my house has several).
Secondly, they gave me window of 9-12 for service.  At 1130 I called to see if I could get an estimate of how much longer it would be.  The person on the phone said she would have to call me back.  20 minutes later I got a call from the technician that said he would be another 30 minutes.  OK....maybe he got stuck in traffic or delayed on his last job.  I let that one go but in fairness, I shouldn't have to call them to find out they will be late.  They should have called me.
Thirdly, the technician shows up in a cargo van....ALONE. His "specialized" equipment was a flashlight and shopvac. I take him downstairs to the first furnace unit.  He opens it all up and shines his flashlight in there for a couple of SECONDS and says, "This is no good.  You have terrible mold."  I asked him to show me.  What he pointed out was DUST!  Hence the reason I requested the duct cleaning.  He then goes on to shine his flash light in the vents in the basement (without taking the vent covers OFF) and says, "Your vents are clean I see no dust.  It is just this horrible mold." I told him we would take care of the "mold" but to just clean the vents like I asked.  He asked to see the other unit.  When he opened that one he shined his light inside and said, "No mold, but the rust on the bottom of the drip pan will turn to mold within a year. We need to treat that too."  He then said that the furnace return was not included.  I told him that I asked and the furnance and return were included for each unit.  Any additional returns were extra.  He then went on to explain that it was because of the type of unit I had.  I had already confirmed it with the scheduler the type of unit didn't matter.
When I refused all the extra services he stepped outside to call his boss.  He said that the unit was "no good".  The boss asked to speak to me and said that they needed to do all the other stuff or he would just be "blowing the mold back into the system and would have to come back and do it again."  I told him that we would take care of any other issues if in fact there were any, but to just go ahead and perform the service.  He refused as which point I was actually relieved.  I was about to tell them that I didn't want them in my house and to leave anyway.  I didn't feel comfortable that they had the equipment or expertise to do the job correctly.
I was able to get a full refund from Groupon and they said they were doing an investigation into that company.  They weren't listed here on Angie's List but I wanted to add this review to warn others.  Go on uTube or google Air Duct cleaning.  It is supposed to be done my a minimum of two people using specialized equipment  that puts the house in a vacuum.  They don't "blow" the stuff around...they are supposed to suck it out of the house.  There are a lot of scams out there and they always try to sell you what you don't need.  We just purchased this home and had a full HVAC service done prior to closing.  We both have backgrounds in construction remediation and HVAC so we know what to look for.
In the end this was a negative experience.  I guess you get what you pay for.  I will pay full price to have it done RIGHT!
