Chimney Repair reviews in Gwynn Oak

    It went really well. They had to change direction midway. They could not grind out the interior of the chimney enough to fit the insert. They gave me the option of them to continuing to try and grind out the fireplace or pick another insert. They gave me time to weigh it and think about it which I appreciated. The person that work most closely with me was Wayne. He really worked with me and I would like for him to be recognized.

    Very prompt, professional (came in company truck with company shirt on), respectful of my property and time.  Explained everything, made sense and seemed honest.  He did have to defer the details (including cost) of the options to repair my roof to an appraiser - so I have to make another appointment.  Luckily, it could be scheduled at 5pm, so I do not have to take more time off.

    They came twice and did a partial fix, but the chimney was still leaking. They ended up coming a 3rd time and doing a complete fix on the chimney at no extra cost. They were very prompt and courteous. I was very pleased with the work. Within the 15 years we have used them, they have changed owners and workers, but they still product quality work.

    I originally had A-1 Roofing come look at possible repairs around my chimney. They noted I needed a new roof and work on the chimney, and showed me pictures as they explained everything. The chimney required a mason, and A-1 was willing to work with me around his schedule to let him complete his work first. Their assistant at the main office was always very pleasant to speak with on the phone, answering my questions or getting back to me quickly when she needed to ask another. The job supervisor was very professional. Since the army had sent me on temporary duty during the roof work, the supervisor was kind enough to send me texts and phone calls to keep me updated. I highly recommend them for other jobs. They do good work and struck me as a considerate, professional business.

    The owner has been very nice over the phone. His lead mason was injured on another job which delayed my work, but the owner called to apologize and rescheduled as soon as he had another mason available. This took an extra 1.5 weeks. The men that came were professional and did a nice job. Since I live in a townhouse, we needed permission from my neighbor to place scaffolding on her property. When she showed concern about her roof receiving any damage from their work, they gave her a written guarantee to fix any issues they caused while on the roof and scaffolding. This put her at ease, and the work was done without any problems. I've been happy with the work by this company and would recommend them to others. They also honored their discount coupon available through Angie's List.

    We had a few issues with them. They don't do as their name suggests; they don't provide a complete service. They didn't retest the flashing to our chimney and we had to pay another chimney company to come and re-attach the flashing to the chimney. Plus we paid them to fix some of the shingles that were damaged by McDowell's. Furthermore, they destroyed our garden hoses and didn't tell us and it took them a week to replace them and they did so with the cheapest brands of garden hoses on the market. They were suppose to come back and waterproof the chimney and we're not even sure that they did the job. We wanted to be there when they were going to do everything and by the time we found out they were here, when we arrived they were leaving. And it didn't look as if they did any work. We had to have them come back and do so more stuff and they tried to put other things in the estimate and they put it in anyway. So the job came up to $200 more. Then they said to put in a liner would cost me another $4000 even though I was already looking at a bill of $8000 in total. It was as though they anticipated the extra work to be pushed on us. The work that one of the guys did was good but they didn't clean up properly. We ended up cleaning most of it ourselves. They did this in November. We would never use them again.

    I thought it went well. But this month before my tenants were going to use the chimney I had they contact the same company for maintenance prior to usage and show them how to use the fireplace. This would have been the first time the system was being used. The owner of the company, Rick came out and explained to my tenant that whomever installed the chimney should have installed the damper and in fact there wasn't one installed. When my tenant called me I contacted Rick and requested an explanation as to why he had not installed the damper when he rebuilt the chimney. He went on to say that he would have to check his records about why he had not installed the damper but it would be an additional $695. I had paid $5400 up to this point. When he finally got back to him he claims that I didnt pay for one and how it was a tough sale and I should just stop b******* and pay for the damper. He was rude and unprofessional and I would not suggest anyone use this company.
    I had used them for years and suddenly after $10k and on my 2nd house renovation the owner has shown me that he has no respect for his customers and doesnt think it was his responsibility to install a damper on a chimney.
    I spent over $100k on my home in renovations and would never have spent $5400 for a chimney and not install a damper to use it.

    Jan. 2014 - UPDATE on our previous post below.

    When we hired Town and Country to inspect our chimneys last year, they were and quot;deemed unsafe,and quot; claiming that and quot;both flue systems are cracked and need to be relinedand quot; and recommended and quot;Breakout existing flue tilesand quot; and and quot;rebuild chimneyand quot; at a cost of nearly $8,000.

    We recently had a wood burning stove installed, with an insulated and sealed liner running through one of our existing flues (Not by Tand C). In the process, we had both chimneys reinspected and scoped. We were shocked to find out that none of them were and quot;unsoundand quot; as Tand C had previously suggested. In fact, the flue systems that Tand C recommended breaking out and replacing were in near perfect condition, with only one hairline fracture on a top tile - the other chimney was virtually unused.

    It now made sense why Tand C would not share their photos and video after their inspection, despite claiming sever damage. Our new inspections showed that Town and Country's previous inspection claims were false and nothing more than deceitful salesmanship.

    Jan. 2013

    Rick High (the owner) and his assistant showed up on time and were quick to set up. As Rick made his initial walk-through, he pointed out, to me, some visible water stains inside one of the fireplaces and some previous repair work on the exterior of the chimney, indicating that someone had previously been and quot;chasing water.and quot; As we walked around, his assistant imaged the inside of the chimneys with a snake camera. The visit was professional and seemed thorough. By the end of the visit, our conversation covered the visible and evident issues and a detailed report was expected to follow.
    Town and Country's gross failures followed the inspection. After a number of ignored requests for the report, by our agent, their response came a week later. The final report contained no detail beyond and quot;Both flue systems are cracked and need to be relined,and quot; and was accompanied by a photo of the house, three superficial photos of cracked exterior bricks and a price tag of $7900.
    We followed up on the report, requesting details for both chimneys with supporting evidence and photos. The response came in an email, from Kay, apologizing for our unhappiness - noting that all the details and photos were already provided in the report and adding that and quot;we have been established for 30 years and service over 20,000 homes per year and half of those homes are real estate transaction such as this. If there is anything further that we can to remedy this matter please feel free to contact our office.and quot;
    We did. And there has been no response since.
    In the end Town and Country charged us for two inspections, provided us nothing of value and took advantage of our time as a business development opportunity (on which they had poor follow through). I'd like to believe that the quote they provided us was legitimate and reasonable, but their reluctance to substantiate the claims gives me little reason to believe some of these issues even exist.
    This is the complete report we paid $400 for:
    and quot;During our inspection we deemed both fireplaces unsafe to use. Both flue systems are cracked and need to be relined. Due to water damage we also feel that the chimney is not of sound structure.
    There have been repairs made to stop water from damaging chimney but it has gone too far and needs approx. the top fifteen (15) courses rebuilt along with a new masonry concrete crown and a properly sized stainless steel multi-flue cap for clearances purposes.
    Recommendation: Fireplace Relines: Breakout existing flue tiles, Install stainless steel lining system, Insulate flue cavities with light weight masonry mix, Seal liner at top and bottom
    Chimney Rebuilds: Set scaffolding to top of chimney, Tear down approx. fifteen (15) courses of brick, Rebuild back to original using new brick, New concrete crown 2and quot; thick, Install new stainless steel multi-flue cap, Waterproof with Chimney Saver from roofline up
    $7900.00and quot;

    Having just bought a distressed house, I was very nervous about the cost of repairing the chimneys.  I was also a bit skeptical of the free estimate Chimney-Tek provided, but figured it couldn't hurt since I was going to pay another company $80 to inspect the chimneys as well.  Both companies detailed much of the same problems, but the one that charged for the inspection was also about 50% more in price.  I couldn't believe it.  I immediately chose Chimney-Tek.
    Vince was very personable and always responsive to my emails.  There is a lot of work that needs to be done, but he was able to identify what was the highest priority and make it work in our budget.  He offered a written estimate with a very detailed description of the work to be done, and the price was exactly right.
    The work was performed over three visits.  His crew came out and lined the chimney.  They did a great job, very clean.  Next, his brick mason came and re-layered the top seven 'coarses' of the chimney.  I was not at home but my wife said he was very nice, and my son really enjoyed seeing the scaffolding!  In a testament to Vince, I had thought that was the end of the work and was willing to pay him the balance but he reminded me they still had to add the chimney cap and damper (I was juggling about 5 contractors at the time).  He could have taken my money and ran but didn't!  We had to reschedule once because a job went late at another site but he gave us plenty of notice and we were able to reschedule.
    I certainly plan to use Chimney-Tek again for the remaining repairs we need.

    This company was not chosen. I was impressed with the estimate but we went with another company. Our neighbor saw this company at our home and had her roof repaired by them. Her roof looks great. The company was fast, efficient and removed the debris. When they gave us the estimate, they were right on schedule and gave us the estimate even though it was raining that day.
