Our timber retaining wall had deteriorated and we received a notice from the homeowners association that it needed to be repaired. The retaining wall is an L-shaped corner wall that is about 5 feet high at the corner (its tallest point) and about 3 feet high at both ends. The wall height varies because of the slope of the property. The wall stretches about 45 feet along the front and close to 30 feet along the side. Due to the deteriorating timbers and various damage that had accumulated over 35 years, we decided to replace the wall instead of having it repaired. Our new segmented block retaining wall was built by Green Future Construction (Laurel, MD) and we're very happy with it. The segmented block is called Alta Pro in a neutral beige/brown color and is made by Nicolock. Reassuringly, Green Future Construction is included as one of the verified contractors listed at the Nicolock web site. We worked with Joey to get an estimate for the replacement wall which included obtaining the engineering plans and necessary Montgomery County, MD permits, removing the old wall and vegetation, building the new wall with the necessary reinforcement grids, rerouting drainage from two gutter downspouts, and restoring the neighbors lawn which had to be accessed to replace the old wall (one side of the old wall was along the neighbor's property line). Joey was very knowledgeable and helpful in describing possible alternatives for the project. Of the 3 independent estimates that we obtained, Joey's was not only the most helpful, his was also the most reasonably priced. Due to uncooperative weather (winter, 2018-2019), there was a delay in building the wall but once construction began in mid-March, it was built quickly and efficiently. Thomas of Green Future Construction managed the construction details and was very good about explaining how the build would proceed and about giving us a daily progress report on the project once construction started. His extensive experience with retaining wall builds helped us to be comfortable with the extensive work involved. The workers were careful and worked hard every day. One piece of information for anyone replacing an old retaining wall, it appears that Montgomery County code has changed since the 1980's and a gravel backfill now is required behind retaining walls greater than around three feet high. The backfill for the original wall was just dirt. In summary, we are greatly satisfied with the retaining wall work performed by Green Future Construction and especially with Joey and Thomas both of whom we found to be incredibly helpful. Retaining wall plantings and adjacent landscaping were also completed for us as a separate project and were very nicely done.

Not good. It was difficult to get in touch with Deco Systems because their office hours are only 10am - 3pm. We called and left a couple messages before our call was returned. The owner/estimator was out of town when we first called, and then his office assistant was out of town. It took almost 2 weeks to make arrangements for him to come--we only persevered because of the company's favorable rating on Angie's list. We should have given up!
Once the estimate was given, communication was still complicated--the office assistant would email us using our home email despite us providing work phone numbers. We would see the emails after work and by then the office was closed! Finally everything was arranged, contracts signed, colors picked and a starting date planned.
The crew showed up as scheduled and began the work while we were at work. Cleaning and repair was first--it was fine.I came home the second day to a driveway finished with a bright white--not the color we had chosen. I asked the supervisor (the owner's wife) who informed me that her husband had shown us colors that weren't available and that this was what they used now. This was not acceptable to us. I let her know that and she offered to put a "wash" on top that would make it look more natural. She showed us a sample of what it would look like on a corner of the driveway and we agreed to have them do it. Once the wash was complete it was still not what we wanted but it was better. The stamped "brick work" was then applied and that was exactly what we wanted. On the last day the supervisor came without her crew to apply the sealer coat. It began raining shortly after she left and the "bricks" became spotted. The spots did not go away when it dried. We knew that the owner and his wife were going out of town for two weeks so did not contact them about this problem until they returned.
In the two weeks that passed while we were waiting for them to return, black splotches began appearing on the driveway and we noticed many irregularities on the finish. We also noticed that the edge of the porch looked bad where the painting of the "bricks" ended. We took pictures of the things that concerned us and sent an email requesting that something be done. After another week the supervisor and one person from the crew came out and we discussed repairs. They agreed to even out the edge of the porch with more paint and they also reapplied the sealer to the "bricks." We are satisfied with that fix. However, the rest of the driveway is still covered in black splotches and irregularities. The supervisor reminded us that she had not promised an even finish and that it was supposed to be a "natural" finish, which is not going to be perfect.  She did offer to apply another coat of sealer. We did not want that because the driveway is now stained with acorns and leaves from a neighboring tree and they were unable to remove that from the finish. If they had reapplied the sealer those stains would be permanent.

The driveway was $20,000. When we paid the worker there was some work that still needed to be done so the next time we decide to work with him we are going to hold back some of the money. He promised to come back and he never showed up.

In our initial meeting, Stuart was prompt and very informative while understanding my expectations for the final product. His suggestions helped save money, and resulted in a solid foundation with a pleasing, and functional area at a fair price. Though weather was a major factor in scheduling, his crew was on site whenever possible and disturbance of the existing yard was kept to a minimum. Throughout the major portions of work, there was a lead crew member that I could communicate my desires and concerns to - all were addressed to my satisfaction. Final product met all my expectations and allowed me to move on to my next project on scheduled. Job well done.

Very Dissappointing and a Waste of Valuable Time.  I would never even consider calling this contractor!
