    Energy Wizard

I'm delighted with all the work Energy Wizard did.  Marirose's design expertise was invaluable and John's construction teams were totally professional, polite, did top-quality work, cleaned up every day, worked through miserably hot weather, and kept at it until every detail was done to my satisfaction. They also disposed of all the old materials (including recycling what could be recycled).

Most of the materials were special order due to the colors we wanted and the Capozzis made sure all the different suppliers' materials were compatible.

I highly recommend Energy Wizard -- and I'm a perfectionist.

    WS CONTRACTORS INC
Materials, service, technicians, and quality of installation were top notch. I got three estimates, Abe Wilcox, owner of WS Contracting gave me a price which was right in the middle of the other two estimates. I choose to go with Abe because of the selection of the materials, which I felt were at the top notch. Other determining factors in my selection of WS, were that they could get the roof striped down and installed in one (1) working day, and for a reasonable additional charge the roof would have a 50 year transferable warranty, 50 years. For peace of mind, for service, for quality workmanship, and materials I highly recommend Abe Wilcox and WS Contracting. And now my wife?s review. Abe personally oversaw the entire project and answered all of our questions. We had a concern that he would sub the project out, but he assured us that his employees would do all the work. As for his crew, they arrived early in the morning and never stopped until the job was complete. We were concerned because a large blizzard was predicted for 2 days from the start of the roof, however, Abe and his team were true to their word and completed the roof right on schedule. They even left our property cleaner than when they began the job. Of course the gutters had to wait a week due to 2+ feet of snow so we kept the old ones attached until the snow event was over. Once the new gutters were  installed, Abe examined the completed work and fixed a couple of minor cosmetic issues. He did not bother us about the final payment until we were completely satisfied. It was a pleasure doing business with a company that is this professional, courteous, and trustworthy. We would recommend WS Contracting to anyone needing any of the contracting services they provide.

    Garner Roofing Company LLC
Work was done in two phases.
    First the Roof:
Work started on Dec. 9th and was competed on Dec. 11th
Materials were delivered just as scheduled on Dec. 7th and stacked on the roof.  Before putting down the new shingles the old roof had to be removed.  This consisted of scrapping off two layers of shingles and tar paper to get down to bare wood.  Bad sections of wood were replaced.  I was impressed with the carpentry skills of the gentleman who replaced the plywood. The new roof consisted of installing ice & water shield, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge starter strip on roof perimeter, new pipe boots, flashing and putting in a ridge vent besides new shingles.  Also included was construction of  a small cricket adjacent to the chimney to help keep water from leaking in around the chimney and closing off one gable vent.  Originally included in the contact was reinstallation of  a new antenna and mount (supplied by me), but I started having concerns about the wiring and grounding being connected according to standards since nobody on the crew seemed to have had experience putting up antennas.  Mr. Garner did come and look at the system and do some research in order to install it, but after finding an antenna installation person and getting a separate estimate he agreed to adjust the price to eliminate the charge for the antenna installation.  I do feel they could have done a better job at protecting my landscaping.  They did put up tarps, but they were laid directly on the plants and pieces of material were dropped onto the plants.  Areas where they had removed shingles but didn't get the underlayment down were covered with tarp until the work could be finished.
    Second the Siding:
Materials were delivered on Dec. 19th, but due to all the rain in December work started on Jan. 4th and was completed on Jan. 6th.  Mr. Garner did call the nights before whenever work would need to be rescheduled because of the weather.
Work consisted of removing the old aluminum siding, removing gutters, downspouts and shutters, installing house wrap, flashing tape around all windows, installing new insulated siding with all related details and accessories, new gutters and downspouts and gutter guard and new soffits.  The existing shutters previously removed were replaced. A different crew was used for the siding work than from the crew that did the roof work. I think this crew could also have done a better job of protecting the landscaping around the house.  They did not put any tarps up and some of their equipment went right into my bushes.  Other than the lack of care with my plants I did feel that the crew had good skills.  I was impressed when they used one continuous piece of fascia above my bow window rather than five separate pieces as the previous contractor had done.  Also required was temporarily disconnecting the electric and phone lines from the house in order to get the siding materials behind them.  No power was lost while this took place.  They readily redid the finish work around one of the roof gables so that the construction would match (each gable had been done by a different crew member).  After the job was completed, I noticed that some of the gutter guard wasn't laying flat in one of the gutters.  Mr. Garner sent someone over within the week to fix the issue.
They did a pretty good job of cleaning up the debris, but I am still finding small pieces of asphalt and siding material in the mulch around the house.
A supervisor was pretty much on site at all times.  Only once did an issue come up after the supervisor had left. The crew had brought sheets of particle board to replace the plywood that was removed from the roof.  I showed them that the contract called for plywood to be used, not the particle board brought.  A quick phone call to the main office fixed the situation.  The supervisor was on site for all of my other concerns and readily answered all my questions.  He gave me a good lesson in roofing and siding construction.
During the contract negotiations all of my questions were answered in a timely manner via e-mail and phone.  Answers were clear and revised contracts were sent quickly.  I found the contract to be very detailed and each phase of work broken out so that I could select exactly which work I wanted done.  Compared to the other estimates received Garner Roofing had the best itemized contract.
Overall I am happy with the work done. (The B in quality is due to the lack of care with the landscaping.)

    American Home Contractors Inc

I'm updating (improving) this review.  The service manager from American Home Contractors (David) reached out to me personally upon publishing this review.  That is the first "good-sign" - a clear interest in customer satisfaction.  He was earnest, professional, and quite courteous.

I expressed to David that perhaps clearer language associated with exactly what the "tune-up" is - and what it IS NOT - would go a long way to "level-set" expectations of the home owner.  We also shared thoughts on the topic of better preparing the "inspector" (e.g.; training, improved procedure & communication, etc.) to provide strong customer support should the home owner wish to expand the "tune-up" into a more comprehensive job.  David did not disagree - he explained the difficulty in avoiding the appearance of a "hard-sell" for more services than the customer initially asked for.  It was a tough situation for the inspector - who really was excellent.

I let David know that interface with the customer in this line of work absolutely requires a common language - although I realize that that is a tough one to manage at times - it is a MUST - it is frustrating for the home owner to not have the ability to communicate with the work crew.

Overall - I shared a helpful exchange with David - he made a terrific effort to improve my overall experience - he even offered to send a worker over to my home to do a bit more - earn "extra credit" of sorts.  I appreciated that - says a lot about the desire to please the customer.

Given this level of effort to "make good" on my experience - plus the terrific knowledge of the inspector (Howard) - and the strong quality of the work that was done I'm improving my overall review to one of "recommend".  While still not an "A" (I really wanted to make it either an "A-" or a "B+" - this was a learning chance for both customer and service provider.  I now recommend American Home Contractors and encourage communications with David should you wish to expand the scope of the "tune-up" to include more comprehensive repairs.  I would use them again.

    Prestige Home Solutions
The crew arrived at 7 am and worked steadily thru the morning, removing the old roofing, and replacing and damaged plywood. They then installed the new roofing, which was finished about 1 pm. There was a wait for the gutters, downspouts and gutter guards to arrive, but they went back to work once they arrived and finished the entire job by 5 pm. They cleaned up everything (and that can be difficult with all my flowers beds and shubbery around the house). The roofing crew was friendly and the work was done well (It rained heavily immediately after they finished and no leaks were found then, or since in this record setting rainy June.

    Ener G Remodeling
I selected 3 vendors from Angie's List that had very good ratings and asked them to meet me and provide their quotes.  I had the 3 quotes in hand and was ready to select one of them when one of my neighbors said that she used Ener G Remodeling a year ago and was very satisfied with her siding work.  Ener G Remodeling was not registered with Angie's List but I went with them because of their price, my neighbor's reference, and the fact that they were local in my county.  They were pretty close to starting on their committed start date.  Grant was their window installer and he was hard-working, professional, and did a great job!  Immediately after the windows were installed, the siding crew showed up to remove the old Masonite siding.  I was impressed that they finished it so quickly and started installing the new siding the same day.  The crew obviously knew what they were doing and they worked very efficiently and professionally. I am very satisfied with the new windows and siding that they installed. The Soft-Lite windows and the Craneboard Solid Core Siding are very attractive and a great improvement to our house.  I would definitely recommend them for your project.  The only minor constructive criticism is their response to voice mails could be a little better.  Once the job started though, they were very responsive to my questions.

    Badger Contracting Inc
It appears that the overall quality of the work is very good. It certainly looks good. I just hope that what I can't see is as good as what I can see. I did have some concerns through the project.  The project manager Mike was not on the site the entire time. In fact it was another of the workers who started the job, and still another who told me the job was finished and had me take a final look.  I had to prompt them to do some remaining cleaning of my deck and gutters which made me uncomfortable as they were kind of a rough looking bunch. The crew seemed a little put off  to be asked to do it even though I was promised this was part of the job. So I wonder how well the other promises concerning the underlayment and ice shield got communicated down from Barry to the crew and if they were actually installed as promised.  I was not here when that was laid, and there seemed to be a great amount of underlayment left over.  Only time will tell, and I hope the 25 year workmanship guarantee will hold up should I find it necessary to exercise it.  They also seemed to be very rough while on the roof throwing around the shingles.  They caused cracks in my drywall in one upstairs room. And as another reviewer wrote, they broke a piece off the bottom of one of my shingles while removing the old roof.  Barry is very personable and seemed professional, and I made the deal with him. He, however, was never on the site while the work was being done.

    Mid-Atlantic Gutters & Exteriors
The gutters were done well and are better quality then others we considered.  Clean up could have been better; screws and cigarette butts were left behind.  One of the screws was found in the rear tire of our car.  The roof cap was dented which caused water to leak into our sunroom and powder room.  We were unhappy with the initial investigation of this issue however Mid Atlantic Gutters did replace the roof cap which resolved the water issue.  If it wasn't for the dented roof cap which resulted in the water issue we probally would have rated this service with an A or B.
