The appointment itself went fine and I think Dr. Emmert-Buck is a perfectly good ophthalmologist. The only thing I don't like about her is that she is always pushing me to do laser eye surgery which always just feels like a hard sell so that they can bill for the surgery. The main drawback to this practice is the time in the waiting room. I have been on time or early to each appointment and then have had to wait for a very long time both before and after the dilation drops. My actual exam was about 5 minutes before the dilation and 5 minutes after. But I was there waiting to be seen for almost 3 hours. This is enough to get me to look elsewhere for an ophthalmologist.

The office of Dr. Brian Dempsey is a small place, but he's very friendly. He spends time with you and he explains everything to you. He'll do anything to work with you. It's not like one of those national chains where you feel like they hired the doctor for the week and then, they're not there anymore. It's his business, so he's invested in it.

Dr. Emmert-Buck is very professional herself. My dissatisfaction with the practice stems from the staff's lack of awareness of patients' needs and total disregard for patients' time. My special needs sister and I have each had two visits with Dr. Emmert-Buck, and each time our separate visits exceeded 2 hours for routine eye exams. The last visit for my sister who is a very good patient dispite her disorder took over 3 hours, most of which was spent waiting for the doctor or assistant. The actual time spent with a provider was 40 min.
While we were in the waiting room along with several older patients who were obviously also weary and awaiting their overdue turns, a woman came into the office with a 10 yr old child and was told by the receptionist that her appointment was on another day. The woman asked if they could and quot;squeeze her inand quot;, and the receptionist agreed. The child was taken for her exam within 15 min.
As my sister was taken to the exam room, I commented to the assistant that they seemed to be running very late. She looked at me as though I had insulted her and gave only a thin smile as a reply. After waiting over 30+ min for each of the subsequent routine exams, we were finally leaving the office at 5:30. The overall atmosphere of the office is very clinical, devoid of any empathy. I think the long delays result from the fact that they take 7 or 8 patients back at the same time, each in an exam room. The exams are performed sequentially on each patient, so each patient is waiting for all the others to have each of the different exams performed. And if you are in the last part of the list, you will wait longer...as we did. I think this practice can be described as a and quot;milland quot;.
More recently my sister and I each had our annual eye exam at Chesapeake Eye Care in Annapolis...a wonderfu experience. Each of our appointments was less than 45 min and they could have not been more caring and patient with my sister. Less than 5 min waiting time between the various exams.
However, if you have a lot of free time and want to spend it in a waiting room, I think you will get adequate care with Dr. Emmert-Buck.

His service is very good. He was good about tweaking my prescription to get it just right.
