Very well. Because the rug is extremely heavy we paid for their 'white glove' treatment, with a discount because we are Angie's List members. The woman I initially spoke to on the phone (from Transit Systems) was knowledgeable and helpful. The men from Ricks who arrived to roll the rug and remove it from my house were also very informative and reassuring (I was a bit worried about shipping my grandmother's antique carpet). My sister was very pleased with how things were handled at her end - they called her repeatedly with updated information on the carpet's arrival, were very obliging, and it arrived in perfect condition.

The movers were supposed to be at my house on Friday at noon. They didn't show & when I called the dispatcher, I was told they would be there "soon". At about 4:00 pm I again called and was told they were "doing me a favor" even agreeing to move me (what's???) and that they would have to reschedule for Saturday at 1:00 pm.

On Saturday, They (only 2 men, not 3 as was quoted in the "deal") arrived, almost 1 hour & 25 minutes late. No call to warn me they would be late or no show like Friday or anything. Only one could speak marginal English and about 30 minutes after they arrived he explained that they had to leave in 30 minutes because that was all the time they had left. He explained that:

    1. They had spent 1 hour &1/2 on the road to my home, 1/2 hour moving me in, and they would need to drive back to be at another job, which would take another hour and a half drive to get to by 4:00 pm.

    The "actual"move process:

    2. I had marked all boxes by categories. Survival were it be put in the house. Category 4's were ro be put back of garage, category 3 next, category 2 next, & category 1 nearest the front and the entrance to the door to the house, so I could deal with them easily. I'm 69 years old, am physically challenged, but felt this way I could work a little at a time. They paid no heed to my instruction at all, just piled them all over the garage willy nelly, asked for their check and left. Clearly they hadn't understood my instructions. When I mentioned the stuff their boss had said they would take away, they said they didn't understand, & they had to leave right away because they had to be at another job by 4:00. All in all, they were gone by 3:15 pm..

Needless to say, my great Angie's list deal wasn't so great. It's been 3 months now, and I'm STILL struggling to fix the mess so I can move stuff in. And, living out of a suitcase, because ALL the category 1's and survival box are "somewhere behind all the category 4's!

Hope this helps someone avoid this mistake.

Update:  Received a courteous response from the vendor, which made since, so I upgraded to a C.  I left it as a C as distance was in the fine print and should have been more obvious.  However, we used C on price as we found another mover that only charged us a flat fee of $350.00 and completed our move in less than 3 hours and drove an hour to us, from Baltimore, and did not charge us a "destination/travel" fee.  I don't know if I'd recommend this place or not, but I would definitely call around to get a price quote as most movers will do a fixed price move and not charge a travel fee.

    Original Comment:
We really don't have much furniture to move and we believe it's a pretty simple move to have completed in 3 hours -- the move is also roughly 3 blocks away.  They quoted us 5-7 hours.  There's no walking distance and doesn't everyone have stairs in their house?  Weird.  I'm happy we didn't use them and I'm very surprised by the $250 surcharge.

I have had to pay for several moves in the past 7+ years because of frequent relocations.  These guys were the absolute BEST in every aspect and if I could use them again I would jump at the chance.  They were on time, very professional, very upfront with costs and provided everything that they said they would.  I had no concerns that entire day - everything went as planned and as discussed in our arrangements.  I had to make a long distance move since this move.  Unfortunately it was short notice and they could not fit us in their already booked-up schedule.  I sincerely wish we could have used them again because I went from this fabulous treatment to the other end of the spectrum.  So - yes - use ARKO - they are wonderful.

I have used this company once before for my own whole house move as well as two moves for my daughter within DC, so I was very familiar with the company. The owner personally took care of getting all of the details from me, and the furniture was picked up and delivered exactly on time. The service is very professional.

I had a very unusual move experience. The move was set for the end of February, but after everything I owned was packed and loaded on the trucks, my realtor called to say the buyers wouldn't be coming to settlement until the next month. Lawrence was still at my house and gave me a lot of comfort in a very upsetting situation. He told me he would work with me and not to worry. He brought everything back the next day and stacked everything in my garage and family room. His guys brought my mattress back up to a bedroom along with some other pieces I'd need in the interval between moves. When I was ready to really move he returned and got everything back on the trucks and got me moved in. When you look at the total I spent please remember that I actually had two moves! He and his men were professional, personable and warm. I have recommended them to a number of friends and family - all of whom had great experiences like mine.
