    Matthews Construction & Design LLC
Purchased a 105 year-old brick house in Maryland on the edge of DC and did a whole-house renovation. After interviewing several contractors, I selected Matthews Construction and Design because of the wealth of knowledge Brian Matthews exhibited on all aspects of construction, his can-do approach to everything on my wish list, promptness of his quote, and reasonableness of the estimated cost. As the work progressed, I found that Brian has an excellent sense of aesthetics in terms of architectural options, as well as balance and proportion. I especially liked the trim options he suggested, including capitals over doorways and windows, panels under windows, wainscoting, and ceiling medallions. He also knows how to get things done and stay on schedule a rarity in the construction industry. When I decided to expand the scope of the renovation, Brian had lots of useful ideas. While offering suggestions, he was always sensitive to what I wanted and I never felt like he persisted in pushing in a direction I didnt want to go. He was able to give quick and accurate cost estimates of any changes I wanted to make along the way, and was able to provide outstanding craftsmen on short notice to keep the project on schedule. He visited the site often to observe work in progress, give instructions to workers for next steps, and address the many challenges that inevitably arise during renovation. Throughout the project, he called me often at the end of the day to find out if I was satisfied with the work being done. He answered my questions and promptly addressed any concerns I raised. The quality of the renovation work is impressive. Now that it's done, I love the renovated house, and so do my family and friends. This renovation project was thoroughly enjoyable, thanks to the competent work and excellent customer service of Matthews. I would definitely use Matthews again and I highly recommend the company to others.

    Deck and Shed Pros
We chose MD Deck and Shed because they were a vendor who uses Screen-eze and we wanted less framing and strong screen to withstand abuse by two cats. The quote was reasonable and the jobs as scheduled for a week out. The work started on schedule and took two days. The framing was cut instead of being a continuous piece in all corners which left gapping holes at all corners of the frames. Sealing the holes was not done unless specifically requested and even then, was done with caulk. Many holes were left unsealed after we requested that they be addressed. The porch decking was painted but then the porch door was left sitting against the new paint, leaving a large deformity in the paint. The door that was custom made looks great, but the screening was also not done well and has cuts around the edging. I have made 3-4 attempts to have Randy come back out to address the issues we documented and let him know about, and he has responded each time saying they will come back out, but has never followed through. While we love the porch, the product (screen-eze) is really what makes it rather than the installation by the crew. If a little more attention to detail had been used, we would have had no complaints. Our goal was an outdoor space free of mosquitos, and because of the framing and sealing discrepancies, that goal was achieved to about 90%.

Mel's Power Washing & Window Cleaning Inc
The power washing seemed to go fine, but the application of the sealant was not satisfactory.  The person came with a spray applicator, sprayed lightly around, and then attempted to leave.  We asked him to apply another coat as we could see areas where no sealant had been applied.  He did apply another coat, but even now we can see areas where the wood is not sealed and where mold is starting to reappear, and it has only been less than 6 months.
Additionally, when applying the sealant they did not cover anything under the balcony deck.
They were late and actually missed the original day when they were scheduled to arrive.
I was not impressed with the work and would not use them again.

    Deck and Shed Pros
Maryland Deck and Shed did an excellent job extending our deck.  Steve was very innovative in coming up with the vision of how to extend the existing deck so that it looked good and was cost effective.  He was also very patient in answering my many questions along the way.
Rob and his crew did a great job in building the deck in just a couple days.  When I thought the built-in bench was too short after the work was completed, Maryland Deck and Shed came back to fix it asap without charging me extra.  I was very pleased with their work and had them come back a few months later when they added deck sealing to their business so that they could seal the deck for us.  I would highly recommend Steve and his team.

    Al Tapper's Timber Tech Inc
This is the second time I've used Al Tapper's Timber Tech (the first time was for a 2nd story deck with stairs to the yard at my townhouse, about 10 years ago). My parents have also used Al's company for their fence and deck needs. Al's crew does a beautiful job and everything is custom, yet Timber Tech is always the lowest bidder!
I recently purchased a house and it did not come with a fence. I have 2 dogs (15 lbs and 50 lbs) and wanted them to have a fenced back yard. I also noticed a lot of people cutting through my front yard, so I decided that should be fenced, too (plus my smaller dog is a Shiba, and they often bolt out the front door, so I wanted a fence to keep her in the yard if she ever does run out the door). Al met me at the house and talked about what I wanted. He recommended using actual wood rather than the pre-cut panels that Home Depot makes. The reason is that my yard is very uneven, so using wood allowed his crew to make sure that the fence went all the way to the ground with no gaps through which my little dog could squeeze out. Al also said the wood would be the strongest material and would last much longer; I believe him because he built my parents' fence, which is now about 25 years old and still looks great. Al's crew built a beautiful picket fence in my front yard, with a gate at the very front (that leads to my front porch stairs) and another gate on the side, for access from my driveway. In the rear, the crew built a beautiful stockade privacy fence with a privacy gate that leads to the front yard. This allows me to let my dogs out the side door and put them directly in the back yard or let them out the basement door into the back yard. The crew added gorgeous detail to the posts and both the picket and stockade privacy fences are beautifully scalloped for added aesthetics. The privacy fence is not the standard stockade fence, with all pickets lined up next to each other. Instead it is two slightly offset layers of fencing for added strength and beauty.
Al also sat for HOURS at the county permit office to fix a permitting problem that had resulted in a stop work order. He provided me with all of the documents required for my town permit, too, but he really went above and beyond by making multiple trips to the county permit office. I highly recommend Al Tapper's Timber Tech. They might take a little longer to get the job done than, say, a Home Depot team, but that's because you're getting true artisans who are concerned with making sure everything is perfect.

    Premier HomePro (240) 223-7034
I contacted Alan during the vacation holiday and got a text response back saying that they could perform the job without any problem. I sent the communication directly through Angie's List.
I spoke with Alan and we had a great conversation about the scope of the project and the work to be done. The only reason that we didn't hire is because me and my wife sat down and discussed if it really was worth the value of the home itself and the area to remodel the home since we know we want to move to an all-brick rambler that has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms due to our family's new addition. This is the only reason. We have full faith and confidence that Alan and his team could perform the job.
Angie's List Members: If you call and don't get a response, send a communication through Angie's List and BE PATIENT!!!! The company will call you back. I saw someone recently give PremierHome an F ratings because they didn't get a call them while they are on vacation. Are you serious? That has nothing to do with the work the company performs "AFTER" you have spoken with someone. Relax. Give the company a chance and UPDATE the review if you do work with the company. Good gracious. Don't give them a bad review if they don't honestly deserve it.

    Maxtor Contracting Group LLc
Maxtor's website should be updated to reflect the actual quality of work that they are performing. They do a good job and the owner does keep his word on agreed upon prices. Overall it was a good experience once we ironed out some communication barriers. I highly recommend that they hire an administrative person or use a service for them to accept and route calls.

    Barron Brothers Inc
The company took my deposit but never did any work. Attempts to reach the company and its owner (on his cell) were unsuccessful; the company phone was disconnected (as of late September) and his voice mail box was full and not allowing new messages. I filed a complaint with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (complaint no. 648-2010), who is awaiting a response from the owner.

They were honest. I'd give them an "A" plus. They were pretty much competitive with everyone else.
