Chimney Sweeping reviews in Bethesda

Both the air duct cleaning and chimney cleaning went very well. They were on time and professional. Very honest and communicative. At first they thought we didn't need the cleaning and then there was an obvious problem in one of the duct runs. After the cleaning, we can actually hear air movement in all of our air returns. I wish the furnace company who replaced our furnace earlier in the year would have mentioned something about throughput. Still... it went exactly as expected and we think it was worth the cost.

On July 2018, I contacted Priddy Clean Chimney Sweeps, Inc, a company that was recommended by Angies List. I asked for an estimate to reline the hot water heater flue as the technician initially believed that the airflow was blocked. [Actually, it was not the case]. The person who wrote the estimate also showed me 2 pictures. On these pictures, I could see cracks around the crown of the chimney and these needed to be fixed as well. Finally, I apparently needed a new damper as they could not find one in my chimney . Ultimately, they took that item off the quote after I took a picture of it and explained that it was already there. I received the following quote [i.e. $3,600]. As can be seen on the picture of the estimate, the "Service Description the Stainless Steel Rain and Animal Guard" is listed at no additional cost. Therefore, I thought that its replacement was included. As I needed to have hot water as soon as possible, I made the mistake of not asking for a second quote from another company. [Picture 1] After the job was completed, I asked for a picture of the chimney to make sure that the job had been completed. They only provided me with the following picture. [Picture 2] As can be seen, the "facelift" of the upper part of the chimney/the crown has been completed. Everything appears to be new, except for the rusty rain and animal guard that had not been changed. I argued that it was included in the estimate at no cost, but to no avail The company replied that We are not in the business of simply replacing things because they are old or dont look as pretty we are in the business of making chimneys SAFE and OPERABLE for homeowners. After spending $3,600, that was really good to know. Bottom line, to get a new rain and animal guard, I had to pay an extra $110. The amount is trivial but I was not particularly happy with the outcome and the answer provided by the company. One needs to spend a considerable time to review the initial quote and make sure that even minor items are fully accounted for. This is the first time that I negotiate the repair of my chimney and I am assuming that this company has negotiated hundreds of these contracts. I was clearly at a disadvantage. Some companies react properly and others dont. This company is clearly in the second category.

I responded to an ad on Angie's list for chimney cleaning for $98. After cleaning the chimney they told me I would about $2000 more work to repair the chimney, when I just had a repair made to the chimney the year before and the earlier contractors showed me pictures before and after their work. If American Professional Chimney & Masonry had showed me a picture to support their recommendation, I would have considered their recommendation was more credible.

Tony Serrano, the owner of Suburban Chimney, did an outstanding job with the necessary chimney work. As it turned out, the project was much more of a challenge than we had expected. That's because the water heater was larger than our previous one, and it required a larger than expected stainless steel flue. Also there was a blockage found in the chimney that needed to be removed before the flue could be installed. Suburban Chimney, with Tony at the helm, did a tremendous job meeting this challenge and completing the task on time. His crew work diligently despite freezing temperatures.

They were very easy to deal with throughout the process. They came out and provided an estimate for the new rain cap and then returned to put it on. When I set up their second visit and added on the chimney cleaning, they suggested I use the Angie's list coupon which reduced the price of the cleaning by ~20 percent. They were punctual and clean on both visits. In terms of judging the quality, it's frankly a bit hard to say since I haven't been up on the roof to look at the rain cap, nor have I looked at the inside of the chimney. We're using them again for another job.

Bryan is very nice and professional. He explained the process of cleaning and parging the smoke chamber, cleaned out the chimney flue, re-layed the mortar crown at the top of the chimey, and replaced the cap/bottom closing damper with a new stainless steel top closing damper system. His crew were professional and also very explanitory. They did not make a mess in the house and left everything clean. I highly recommend Bethesda Chimney for any of your chimney needs.

Bryan was fantastic. He came into my house with covers for his shoes, checked the flue and told me what needed to be done. We discussed having it converted to a gas fireplace and he gave me all the options plus estimates, thoroughly explaining the process. He then went and checked both chimneys that were in great condition as we had them done in 2012 because of the earthquake. He also told my neighbor that her chimney was missing a cap on her chimney. He called a plumber he recommended who followed up and made an appt. The plumber came and he, too was extremely knowledgeable and explained the entire process and answered all my questions. Both of these businesses were the best I have had in a longtime. Very professional and extremely helpful. Best $99 I have spent.

The tech showed up on time as scheduled. He inspected the chimney and informed us that it was already in good shape and did not require cleaning. And he charged us nothing for the visit (!) I really appreciate his professionalism and honesty. We will definitely call them when we do need the cleaning!
