Dog Grooming reviews in Winchester

We have a beautiful eleven year old Maine C*** cat.  On Saturday, March 1, 2014, I took him
to Dog fathers Pet Styles in Winchester and what a horrific experience!
I asked Jeffrey Horton (the owner) to give him a bath and a
trim.  But when I picked our pet
    up, I was completely devastated!
Horton had completely shaved our beautiful long hair cat
except for a small area around his chin and the very tip of his tail!
My wife and I asked Horton why? Was there any reason why he
did this? And if he had any possible justification, why on earth didn?t he call
us first?  Horton is a pet groomer
    and not a veterinarian.
When we confronted Horton, he became extremely defensive and
agitated saying something about he had the option to do this per our
    direction.  This was totally
absurd.  This has been one of the
coldest winters.  Why would we ever
want our pet to be completely shaved and all we asked for was to give our cat a
    bath and trim.
Our original connection with DogFathers was through Horton?s
mother Carol who originally ran Carol?s Pet Grooming in Woburn (since closed).
She?s now in business with her son, Jeffrey Horton at Dogfather?s.  It was upsetting that Carol was present
    during this entire incident.  She
has groomed our cat on a regular basis over the years and certainly understood
    what our expectations were.
On Wednesday, March 5, my wife took our cat to our
    veterinarian in Arlington.  After
examining him, she noted there was no medical justification for shaving off all
his fur.  Since his fur wasn?t
severely matted, there was also no grooming reason either.  Our vet stated? No reputable groomer
would shave a cat unless there was specific approval from the owner.  If there were concerns, a reputable groomer
would call the owner, lay out the options and perhaps encourage the owner to
seek medical advice from their veterinarian.  She also told my wife that the buzzing of the grooming
shears is extremely stressful for most cats and that many cats require sedation
    when it is absolutely necessary.
We brought our cat into Horton around 9:30 in the morning.  Despite calls during the day as to when
we could pick him up, he kept our cat until after 6:00 in the evening.  Despite our calls, he never mentioned
his plan to shave off all his fur.
What Horton did to our little pet was completely inexplicable.  Since Carol was there all the time, we
also feel she shared in this.  We
will never have any of our animals groomed by either Horton or his mother Carol
at DogFathers or whatever pet grooming place they open in the future.  What they did to an eleven year old cat
in the depths of the winter for no rationale reason is unforgivable and
    extremely cruel.
What I have since learned is that groomers in the State of
Massachusetts do not require a license nor are they inspected.  We are writing this review so others
might not have a similar experience.

  • My dog was well treated and the grooming was what I requested. Both people I met were friendly and seemed genuinely interested in my dog and his well-being. Took a little longer than they estimated.

  • Julie is fabulous. She doesn't rush you and makes sure she knows exactly what sort of cut you want for your dog, asking specific questions. She is very kind and welcoming to the animals. She is also good about follow up. My dog was done about 40 minutes later than she had specified, but no matter - she is still much faster/efficient than the place I used to go where I lived previously. Fabulous cut, fabulous value, I will be going back!

  • The owner and her assistant obviously love dogs. Even though they were way behind (it was well after their closing time when I picked my dog up), they did not take any shortcuts. Everything was included in the price, from nail trimming to expressing the dog's anal sacs. I estimate they spent 2+ hours on him -- a terrific bargain for the price.
