    1st Choice Home Improvements
We had two projects- 1) complete remodel of main bath and 2) some partial remodel work for master bath (ceiling), hallway (replace 4 doors), kitchen trim painting. Rich and Paul responded promptly with a reasonably detailed estimate. We negotiated a little because their estimate on the second project was significantly higher than two other quotes I'd received from similar size companies. The work was done on time, despite winter weather, and their sub-contractors were very good, professional and clean (!!). Paul did most of the oversight and his attention to detail, particularly for the main bath remodel, was great and much appreciated Like the other reviews, we also had some communication challenges, but found that text messaging with Paul works best. This is our third experience with remodeling and I think this is common to many contractors. Be sure to include a payment plan in your contract and consider details you might not anticipate would need explanation. We had 4 hall doors replaced (excellent job) but the trim painting was done only on the hallway side. Never occurred to me to specify *both sides* of the door trim for painting. Overall, a very good experience and highly recommend them for remodeling jobs.

The sheer scope of our project demanded extensive coordination between several different contractors and designers - something that has caused no end of headaches in the past. Under the guidance of Hagit, Brian, Mark, and the whole Kitchen Center team, however, our experience could not have gone more smoothly. Our remodel began with discussing design ideas with Hagit and Brian. After providing only a rough idea of what we wanted, they returned to us with designs that went above and beyond what we had envisioned - their experience and expertise were evident right off the bat. Like other reviewers have mentioned, their design included pegboard drawers, spice drawers, and an excellent and versatile arrangement of cabinets - though the highlight for me, personally, was the dead corner organizer. Their design really made optimal use of the space we had available. Hagit responded to our questions and comments promptly and with great insight, and the whole team proved very easy to work with. From that point on, it was largely a hands off experience on our part. We picked out some cabinet colors and designs, as well as the appliances and counter-tops (though we sought their advice on those as well) - but they coordinated all the contractors and subcontractors and established a construction schedule to which they rigorously adhered. Mark and his crew of contractors worked diligently and efficiently. They sealed off the second floor to preserve its livability and afforded us free use of the house throughout construction. His team, as well as every subcontractor they hired, provided excellent work that we are very pleased with. Any issue that arose was resolved promptly and satisfactorily. No project is without its unexpected complications, but the Kitchen Center team handled them with aplomb, and the project was finished well within schedule. Even when we chipped in that we were interested in having central air installed, Brian found a contractor and seamlessly integrated it into the greater body of work. Though they don't come cheap, the Kitchen Center is well worth the money. We are very pleased with the work they've done for us, and it was an absolute pleasure working with them.

Very well, installers were very courteous and professional, explained everything there were going to do, and did an excellent job prepping and then cleaning up afterwards. Independent inspection of work performed in May passed the Grade. No issues or problems. Will find out for sure this coming winter!

    Calnan's Energy Systems Inc.
I contacted Robert Calnan to discuss adding insulation to my roof after ice dam damage this winter.  After discussing various options with him, he actually talked me out of taking any action right now.  He was incredibly honest and very helpful.  Obviously he's been in business this long because he puts the customer first and tries to really understand what would work best for them.

    MA Design & Construction Co
We hired this company for an "$899 for a painter for a week" special on Angie's list. We created a "to-do" list for the 40 hours we purchased and the painters started right into it. We had two large rooms to be painted (ceilings and walls). Sounds easy enough except that there was extensive preparation work in one of the rooms. We had taken down a large mirror over a fireplace and removed the old wallpaper that was beneath it to discover that the wall was an unusual combination of lath and plaster with a chunk of blue board stuck in the middle. This required a lot of prep work and the painters did this in between paint coats for maximum efficiency. We were very happy with the painting of both rooms but we were ecstatic with the prep work that was done where the mirror had been. In the end the guys delivered more than the 40 hours we bought so that the rooms were completed. This $899 was a great value!!
This had gone so well that we decided to ask MA Painters and Remodeling to quote us on a couple of other projects that we had delayed for quite some time. The quote was an additional $4100 (or thereabouts). There were two distinct projects:
                1. 1) Remove a large bay window.
                2. 2) Repair and refinish a staircase.

The window was a 4'x8' bay window. Removing it necessitated re-framing the resulting hole, installing plywood, vapor barrier and shingle to the exterior, installing insulation and blue-board to the interior, taping, skim-coating, priming and painting. In the same wall there was also a through-wall air conditioning unit that we also wanted removed. We had a tight deadline for this work as relatives were packing their suitcases to come visit. Having explained this we were assured that this portion of the project would be complete before they arrived. It was buttoned up a day ahead of schedule.
The staircase was pretty "sad" looking and in much need of a face-lift. A couple of pictures would say it all! The stairs had seen better days. In the end they had been carpeted. In the process of carpeting every other baluster had been removed. This led to the handrail being unsteady and severe creaking on the treads. When we moved in we pulled all the carpet. This left the treads and risers pock-marked with carpet staples. The lower newel post had about an inch of play in it. Long story short - MA P&R sanded and filled the treads and risers, bolted down the newel post, replaced the handrails and balusters, replaced all the newel caps, stained the treads, handrails and newel caps and painted the risers and balusters. The creaking treads went away with the increased stability of the rails.
Throughout this process all the guys who worked on our house were diligent and professional. Marc (the owner) ran quality control. I have to say that Marc really wanted to "do it right"! Kudos to the whole crew.

    Rogers Insulation Specialists
Everything went as schedule. The crew was professional, polite and clean. Most of all the work was designed, supervised and checked in person by Rick Taglienti. When Rick found upland minor fixes during the job he addressed them with no additional charges. With that he won me over. I would recommend working with Rick to anyone as he proved once more that honesty is the best policy. And I did rehired Rogers insulation the following year for additional work I wanted.

The long time perspective allows me to say the gas bills were reduced by 15- 20%, the basement pipe that froze in the past didn?t froze
during last week?s single digit temperatures and no ice dams so far.

We were very pleased. InsulPro was a subcontractor to another company that we actually hired, but since that other company had InsulPro do the work and they were the crew we dealt with, we're reviewing InsulPro.
This was done as part of the MassSave program. The $3374 represented the part that we had to pay with the rest (about $3000) being paid by the MassSave program. As an aside, this program is an absolute no-brainer. If you have an older home you should be doing this. MassSave pays most of the bill. We could have split the insulation work over two years if we wanted since MassSave has an annual limit and they would have paid more, but we just wanted it all done before winter. Our house is from 1931 and has never had ANY insulation in the walls, only in the attic.
There was one blip on the first day when the crew didn't show up but it wasn't their fault. The general contractor failed to schedule them properly. The rest of the days they were on time, very polite and professional. At another point they cut through an electrical wire running through the wall. They told us that their electrician would fix it and he did, replacing that wire completely.
We had been warned that some of the insulation, which is blown in under pressure, could get into the house through cracks - and it did. It wasn't much and easy to vacuum. Better to be warned in advance than surprised.
In our case they had to remove a bunch of shingles to drill holes through the underlying panels. They then filled the holes with foam and re-nailed the shingles. We knew that the shingles would not go on perfectly (they warned us) but we plan to paint next year so it didn't matter. Be warned that if you weren't planning to repaint your house and you have wood shingles or clapboards then you should be prepared to do some touch-up painting after they are done.
Overall as pleasant an experience as it could be. I would recommend them.

    Marcellos Design & Builders
Marcello's Renovations was a pleasure to work with. Their work is outstanding, and the are extremely organized and responsive. The project was on time and on budget. During the gut renovation, we found a surprise chimney in the second and third floor wall (it had been removed from the first only!) and the additional cost to remove this, while obviously not included in the original bid, was transparently and reasonably added. Marcello and Joe rapidly responded to many inquiries over email and text message. They were always very transparent and had great ideas for the project. It started with a visit of the existing bathrooms, and a general idea of how to configure the new bathrooms. Upon the gut renovation, we found a surprise chimney in the second and third floor, which though it had to be removed, they had great ideas for moving a wall and reconfiguring the adjoining bathrooms to a better layout for each. We also found that we had to alter part of the kitchen to get the half bath sink recessed into the wall. Joe single handedly redesigned the area of the kitchen, and it looks even better than before. They had great ideas and taste on how to arrange the general layout of the bathrooms.
I unequivocally recommend Marcello's Renovations to anyone looking to do remodeling work.

They stuck to the estimate that I got from them in June of 2011. They were accommodating in getting into the attic without trekking through my whole home. They were clean. The home inspector required a flame-retardant paint, and Anderson was great about responding to that additional need. The whole job took a few hours.

    Stone Circle Builders LLC

We met Neil Dooney when he managed our insulation installation in the basement and attic.  He clearly knew everything there was to know about how to do this properly in an older home and he ensured that the actual insulation process came out perfectly.  Despite some challenges with our older home, Neil came through and the job was completed perfectly.

Neil subsequently started Stone Circle Builders and in this capacity helped us redo our basement.  He presented us with a number of excellent suggestions after hearing our vision.  He helped us see that we should go with a better plan (which he designed) and then did a great job on that plan.  He did nearly all the work himself and he is an incredibly hard worker, and he is fast, efficient and talented.  He rebuilt our aging staircase with additional framing for support and he demo'd the ancient paneling that needed to go.  He also coordinated cleaning, reorganization and redesign of our basement.  Through all this Neil was a true pleasure to work with and we hope to work with him many times again in the future.

We have worked with many contractors before and our experience with Neil was completely different.  He was transparent about costs and actually came in under budget.  He was efficient and worked long hours - always with a smile.  He clearly has excellent skills and a gift for dealing with older homes.  We can't recommend him highly enough - outstanding work!  We have already referred many friends to him and he is doing work on their homes already.
