    The Fireplace Guys LLC
They let me know when they would arrive at the start of the arrival window via text message and were prompt (~ 20 min into 2 hour arrival window). Took off shoes and brought in cloths to cover floor. While onsite, provided information about conversion to gas fireplace (at my request), took measurements, recommended the type of gas conversion unit that was likely to work best in my fireplace and explained why. Guys were friendly and respectful. Packaged up equipment neatly - not a trace that they were there. Would definitely hire again.

    A-Tec Chimney Sweep
When I was getting the insulation work done, when they were trying to do the air sealing around the chimney, they noticed an old chimney flue. It turned out to be what looked like an old chimney flue coming out of a wood stove in the second floor. It was broken, so it was snapped off. The insulation company said, "We're not comfortable sealing this off. If for some reason it was a back trap for the chimney, you have issues. We don't want to be liable for it. You probably just need to seal it, patch it, but we don't want to do that work, it's not what we do. So, have someone else come and address that, make sure it's fine before we finish." So that is why I had to get them. So, A-Tec Chimney came out and basically confirmed what it was and why it was there and then they basically mortared over and patched up that pipe to close it off from the chimney and confirm that nothing was blocking the chimney after they did that or anything like that. So it was really basic. It was $200 for them to do that. I was satisfied with the job that they did. It literally took them 5 minutes, they basically just knocked off that section of the flue that was connected to the chimney. They just hammered it off. Then where the hole was, they literally put mortar over it and smoothed it out. That was literally all they did. I probably could have done it, but I wanted them to come to make sure that the old flue pipe wasn't connecting anywhere else and wasn't still active to make sure that it was safe to do that. One of the things that I really liked about them is that everyone else I called to get this very simple job done was saying that they would also need to inspect the chimney and send a camera down there to snake it look at it and that I would probably also need the chimney liner and all that stuff. Everyone else was a lot more expensive. The guy that came, did what he needed to do and he didn't try to upsell me. He was like, "Listen your chimney is so old that it's probably pointless to put a liner in it at this point." He didn't try to upsell me like a lot of the other folks did. To me, that is important, especially as a new homeowner with all the other expenses. I feel like that may be valuable for other people to hear because when you don't know anything about what is being repaired it's hard to tell whether they're trying to just get you spend more money or not. So I thought that that was important.

    5 Star Ventilation
The guys from 5 Star just left after installing a chimney liner (in our unlined chimney), insulation, a custom chimney cap and our wood-burning stove. Everything is now working perfectly and completely up to code. These guys are the best around, hands down. Completely professional, completely thorough, and all work done with complete integrity.

5 Star was recommended to me by several people, and I am so happy I contacted them. I won't let anyone else work on my chimney.

    RockSolid Chimney, LLC
They were supposed to provide masonry repair services in addition to the chimney sweep. They called and said they would get back to me but they didn't, so I'm supposed to get a rebate. When they came, they charged me an extra $150 for putting the pile in the garbage disposal. They told me to add a lining inside the chimney but their estimate was too high.

Very professional, courteous, expert service.  Got a quick call-back on original phone inquiry. Technician arrived as scheduled. They did the cleaning and also explained what else needs to be done.  Very satisfactory.

    BEANTOWN CHIMNEY SWEEP
The repoint was built well initially until you get to cap on top. Cap put on too small with no apron protecting water from getting in. Have called them and scheduled job be done again, as all flashing has flown off and bricks and mortar loose due to not being done correctly. I was told by my contractor as well as neighbor former head of fire dept that beantown should do job over at ABDOLUTELY no cost to me. They made two apts with me, I lost entire afternoons, twice in the week, and they no showed. I lefft messages and sent two emails, with the last one giving them until 5pm today to respond before I write bad reviews. Never heard a word from them!! Totally unprofessional and horrible customer service, plus will now cost me thousands to have a job done right to correct a job I paid a lot of money for with them! I do NOT think they should even be on Angie's List!I also was told that these jobs should last upwards of 50 years if done right. Initial job was less than 9 years ago!

    Boston's Best Chimney
Boston's Best Chimney installed a wood stove insert in our fireplace in 2006 and supposedly lined the flue and did everything necessary to make it a safe installation.  At the time I paid them several thousand dollars for that work.  After that we had them back twice every year, once in the fall, once in the winter, to clean the flue.  Two years ago they said that we did not have the correct flue liner (in spite of the fact that they had installed it) and they would not clean the chimney again unless we spent more than $2,000 to correct the situation.  It did not matter to them that they had done the original installation, that we had paid them a lot of money to do it, and that they were asking for thousands of dollars to correct an installation that they had done wrong.  Last year we had a different company come out to clean our chimney and they didn't seem to have a problem with it.  However, this year, when we specifically asked them about the safety of the partial stainless liner that Boston's Best had installed, they said that it really was not safe.  So for 10 years we have been living with an unsafe condition because Boston Best decided to take a shortcut when they installed our wood stove insert.

    Horizon Chimney Services Inc
Steve arrived early and took the time to walk me through everything he was doing.
Price of this visit will be applied as credit towards any work they are hired for.  Would have preferred a free estimate. We chose to have Horizon come out because their estimates for cleaning and caps (what we initially wanted) were lower than the competition's.
Now we're pricing out liners. If Horizon's price comes down to be competitive, we'll go with them for the liner replacement.

    American Energy Savers
We received a "cold call" from American Energy Savers at the beginning of December 2012. I explained at the time that, based on their quoted price, I might be interested in their services but, since I co-owned my house with my sister, I would have to speak to her and have her agreement in order to book them. They were no end of attentive while trying to track us down to set a date for the work to be done but we eventually settled on a window of time on the 12th of January, 2013 betwen 7 and 11am. I received a confirmation phone call the night before and set my alarm for early Saturday morning to be up on time for them. Saturday morning came and I waited for more than four hours for the workmen to arrive but, when they finally did, well past the end of that window, I explained to them that I had other comittments for the day and could not stay around for an additional three to four hours for the scheduled work. The workmen were perfectly nice and professional and apologized saying tht they had not been apprised of the time they were expected. So I sent them away, without doing the work, and planned to call the company to complain and reschedule. However, I got tied up with my other comittments and did not get around to calling that day. I never received a single call back from them to either apologize or reschedule. Now that I read the other reviews of this company, I am so glad that I was too busy to follow up with them. I will certainly look into the other companies listed with favorable reviews. Thanks, once again, to Angie's list for saving me and my hard-earned money!

    PC Chimney Systems
Larry and his crew fixed cracks in both chimneys by replacing the cracked bricks, repointed the chimneys, added caps, and replaced the liner to our boiler. They worked quickly, answered all our questions, and were extremely clean when working inside the house.   We highly recommend them.
