    Ameriprise Financial Services
In 2002 the company for which I worked allowed Ameriprise (then American Express Financial Services) to walk their offices signing up prospective clients.  Since my husband and I had a number of 401K accounts still sitting with former employers, we signed up -- after being promised we could "consolidate" all those accounts into one rollover for maximum benefits and ease of planning.  We were also promised we could invest in just about anything, but that lots of good advice was forthcoming as well.  The significant (about $500 annually) fee was to be waived due to my company's relationship with Amex.  We were initially disappointed to find that our accounts couldn't be consolidated as promised, so charges were made on many small individual accounts that added up fast, wiping out most profits.  Still, we felt we needed to give it some time, and we had bought an insurance policy through our advisor.  Fast forward to 2006, American Express Financial Services became Ameriprise.  The market was up, but, overall, we were losing money in our accounts due to the kinds of funds we were now "allowed" to purchase, which were limited to Ameriprise "River" funds.  The fees went up, and our advisor, with whom we'd had a cordial (if not--and it was not--financially beneficial relationship) left Ameriprise.  We found another, better, advisor elsewhere, and began the process of moving out funds from Ameriprise, only to find that one of the 401K's had, because we had said "these are great funds that consistently make a profit, don't sell them yet" been put into a bucket-type 401K that made American Express (not Ameriprise) the trustee and effectively removed our ability to control the investment.  As of 2012, after much work on our part, we still cannot free those funds; the insurance policy sold us for my husband and the control of the last 401K rollover funds left in our account has passed to Geoffrey Simons of North Reading, MA (or so say the Ameriprise customer service people), who flat out refuses to cooperate with our efforts to get a signature required to move them out of Ameriprise/Amex control.  Apparently, if there is no new sales commission for Mr. Simons, there is no service.
