  • David was outstanding. His attention to detail, his responsiveness, and his on-hand approach to the project was very impressive. The subcontractors were extremely polite accommodating. Upon completion, the new garage was left completely clean and ready for ready for immediate use. I highly recommend Neilson Homes for your improvement project.

  • Lenny's work ethic and attention to detail are great. He really aims to please his customers, and we were very pleased with the outcome of the project. It's been a couple years since the project and have enjoyed porch many times, and look forward to spending many evenings out there again when spring returns!

  • Working with Brian was nothing short of a nightmare. What was supposed to take 3 weeks, took a total of 14 weeks. And it wasn't to perfection, which you would expect after 4 times the estimated project duration. Due to his errors, we had to adjust the stair height on all the stairs leading up to the attic -- and we had to do this ourselves, because we didn't dare reach out to Brian knowing he would if he responded at all, it would take him months to get to. This was just one of many issues we had to deal with following Brian's "completion" of the project.
When we first started the project, Brian had a good few guys working for him on the job -- that quickly dwindled to one guy for the ENTIRE project. There is no way one guy should be framing an entire attic by himself. There were a million and one excuses as to why he didn't have a team at our house and there were a million and one excuses why they had to stop work altogether on our house throughout the project--you name the excuse, he had it. Sadly, he was a referral from another contractor we like. Our terrible experience with Brian reflects very poorly on the referrer.
As a full-time working mother of four small children, including twin newborns at the time Brian started the work, this added much unneeded stress on our lives.

  • Melissa is a delight to work with. She spent our initial meeting getting to know us, our space, and our ideas for how we wanted our rooms to look and function. When we first contacted Melissa, all we knew was that we wanted our space to be comfortable, casual, and kid (and dog) friendly. And she really understood that. A few weeks later, she presented several design options and helped us pick and choose what we liked about each one. From there, she came up with a design that was perfect for us.

She set us up with a fabulous contractor to help carry out her plan. The renovations included new construction windows, widening a doorway, installing radiant heat, replacing tiles, and installing a custom built media cabinet and window seating (designed by Melissa). While the renovations were taking place, Melissa shopped for new furniture, rugs, lighting, and fabrics. She always presented several options that will work well in the space and helped us choose between them. She has an amazing eye for detail, all the while keeping our tastes in mind.

As the renovations were coming to an end, she designed window treatments and helped us choose paint colors. She found an amazing company to do the custom window treatments and cushions for the window seating. The finished product far exceeded our expectations. Previously, we never used our sunroom. But now it's our favorite room in the house. Melissa is a talented designer with an intuitive sense about what her clients will like. She's so easy to work with and we trust her advice. She has high standards for the companies she recommends for painting, carpentry, and window treatments, not to mention furniture stores and fabric vendors. We absolutely recommend her services.

  • Morgan Exteriors was suberb to work with from start to finish. We consulted with two other contractors, but Morgan's proposal was the closest to what we wanted and at the best price as well. They laid out the possibilities clearly, asked our input on the design, and handled all permits with the city. They presented us with the approximate timeline for the construction at the beginning, and it was very accurate. During construction, the crews were hard-working, friendly, and very considerate. We have an ailing dog, and his only access to the outdoors was through the work area - they built temporary ramps for him as needed and always checked with us when his access would be blocked temporarily to insure the timing was ok and give us a clear indication of when it would be restored. They made sure the work site was as tidy as possible when they left for day, and on a couple of occasions stayed late to clean up. Things always happen, and on two occasions we had to make on-the-fly design changes to accommodate unforeseen circumstances - on both occasions they explained clearly what the challenges were, the designer came to our home to work out the details of the changes.
All in all, this was the best experience we've had with any contractor, and we will certainly go to them again if the need arises.

  • Usually, when people speak about home builders/contractors, you hear words like "overbudget, behind schedule, non responsive, unprofessional." I'm happy to say that Jel and his team at Mattos Construction did not resemble any of those words. In fact, each time I described the project - with a smile - I constantly used the words "ahead of schedule, on budget, extremely responsive," and "total professionals." I will provide examples of each of those:
"On budget"Other than mutually agreed upon change orders: upgrade of electrical service, and upgrade quality of insulation, our project was exactly the dollar amount we planned when we first signed the contract five months prior to starting the work. In fact, each time we requested minor changes, it was hardly ever a discussion. We would mention it, Jel would think about it for about 30 seconds, and would respond with "No problem." And that was that.
"Ahead of schedule"My father is an architect and was astonished at the speed with which Jel and his team were accomplishing the tasks - without a trade off of lower quality. Jel's original estimate was 8-16 weeks, depending on what was discovered once they began opening up walls. We were able to move in and use the kitchen, and dining room by the middle of the 6th week. They completed the entire punchlist exactly 2 months to the date they started.
"Extremely Responsive" Each time I had a question, whether it was sent by email, cell phone, or text message, Jel and his team responded almost instantly. Other examples: When the port-a-potty began smelling a bit funky, one phone call to Jel that day and later the same afternoon, a truck from the port-a-potty company came to clean it out. Another example: After they finished sealing the deck, I noticed 3 of the boards were a different shade than the rest. The next day, I came home and they were stained and re-sealed.
"Total professionals"Every single member of the Mattos team that worked on our house - and I mean every single one - were the nicest, hardest working people. He had a specialist for every role required - not one or two people doing the whole thing: different people for demo and framing; plumbing; electrical; decking; cabinets; countertops; backsplash; flooring. Each day, the workers arrived between 7-7:30 am, and left around 5:30, leaving behind a broom-clean workspace. Our neighbors who stopped by were simply in awe at how clean they always left it.
The overall quality of their work was excellent. It is an entire team who are all obviously very proud of the job they do every day. The deck, without our input, was beautifully designed and crafted with quality materials and technique; the crown moulding; the design of the island; the specs for the cabinets. The folks at Mattos made the process as pleasant and worry free as could be expected with a major renovation effort such as this. We plan to use Mattos for a roofing and siding project next year, and he's currently working on a major exterior brick restoration job at a 9-unit condo building in the South End.
Would I recommend him? Absolutely. I'd be more than happy to be a referral for him anytime.

  • We had an excellent experience with Morgan Exteriors. Morgan Exteriors did a second floor addition for us and replaced all our windows and doors. The process was flawless from start to finish. The salesman,Tom, offered a very fair price and there were no surprises. The project manager, Marc, made himself available and was able to answer all the questions we asked. Furthermore, the project manager assisted with the design of the addition and helped make our dreams a reality. They were efficient and the job was done in a timely and professional manner, therefore, the disruption to our life was minimal (important because we have small children). The team always showed up on time and worked hard. We would absolutely recommend these guys and plan on using them in the future!

  • They were late getting started, but after that everything went beautifully. They were there when they said they would be, were very professional and friendly and completed the work within the time frame they estimated. When there were two minor details that we were not satisfied with, they were quite responsive and corrected them quickly without any objection.

  • We obtained two estimates for this work. RJN's was lower than the second estimate by 50% but he came highly recommended, so we hired him. Job was delayed for over a year due to our need to obtain special building permit due to recent change in zoning laws, but RJN only charged for its minimal increase in materials cost. Rob kept in close touch with us during the entire year and started the work when he promised to start. Rob was on the job daily, and the work progressed smoothly. Rob never let any unexpected discoveries throw him off. When we decided, after the work had started, to change the type of heating in the new room, and Rob's plumber gave what we both considered a ridiculously high price to make the change, Rob readily agreed to let us hire our own plumber. He then worked closely with our plumber to coordinate the details. On days when RJN's work on our project couldn't go forward and Rob was working elsewhere, he made himself available to answer questions and returned to help with the coordination of our plumber's work with his work and to resolve an issue with the oak flooring installer. The quality of the completed product is excellent. We tend to sweat the details and Rob does as well. Rob is honest, intelligent, straightforward, and easy to work with. He constantly stays in touch, and kept us posted on outstanding issues. We asked Rob to take care of a number of extra work items. His prices were fair. Rob did not "nickel and dime" us on small changes to the original scope of work.

  • Said it would take three months. After two years -- failed inspections, complaints from City, work still wasn't finished and he disappeared. Windows and door leak. A rip-off con man -- and proud of it! And he's apparently still out there, trying to do business.
