We used Calnans Energy Systems for three long-overdue jobs on our home and we are very happy with the results. Rob and his sons arrive on time, work diligently throughout the day and, when they leave, the place is cleaner and tidier than when they arrived. They are a pleasure to have around and Rob always takes the time to explain what is involved in the work, how he is going to approach it and involves us in any last-minute decisions that need to be made. Rob has a good aesthetic eye and will help with suggestions that are in keeping with the age of the house. It is obvious he takes great pride in his work and has an old-fashioned work ethic. His carpentry skills are solid -- the new cellar door is plumb and snug. Thanks, Calnans -- we are delighted we found you!

This is the 3rd time we've used Jel Mattos and his crew. The first time they redid all our bathrooms, replaced the roof, and changed an unusable garage to a functional and beautiful mud room and storage room with shelving. The second time they completely renovated our very run down family room in the basement and turned it into a wonderful multi-use TV-room with a redesigned fireplace. So when it came time to renovate our kitchen I knew who to call.
I did get estimates from a couple of other very strong contenders, but in the end I went with Jel, because we know and love his work and he has the best crew around.  They are polite, kind, helpful and professional and always clean up after themselves.
I have hated my kitchen since we moved in 10 years ago and have spent the last ten years making a long list of must-haves for my new kitchen. Jel did not flinch when he saw it, but had his kitchen designer Ana come in to take a look. Ana is amazing! Her design ideas were great and I am so happy I listened to her when she gently told me why some of my ideas weren't practical. She would then figure out how to make them practical and turn them into reality. ALWAYS listen to Ana! :)  She knows what she's doing.
But Ana is not the only one who went above and beyond. Everyone in Mattos Co. is special. Fernando, the project manager, made sure that everybody knew what they were doing and he took care of any problems along the way. Wesley the cabinet maker is an artist. He makes the most beautiful cabinets exactly to your specifications and then installs them flawlessly. His sidekick Walter was also great. I should point out that I may not be the easiest client. I had many requirements and changes along the way and Wesley figured out how to deal with each and every one in a superb and often very creative way.
A good company starts with the boss and Jel is no exception. This is one fantastic contractor who always says "Sure, we can do that", or "No problem, we will take care of that".   I made a ton of small changes along the way, and they were all dealt with swiftly and beautifully and without reproach.
My kitchen now look like something out of a magazine and it is super functional. How great is that?

However, before I would sign the contract the person doing the audit put in front of me I wanted a chance to check out Next Step Living on Angie's List.
I did that after he left, and frankly was not persuaded by what I found. The ratings summary graph alone, much less the experiences of customers, was below the level I would normally accept for anyone working on my house. Nevertheless, I called Next Step Living and spoke to the Field Manager for all the crews NSL sends out. He explained to me that some of the crews that work on jobs are subcontractors which the utilities that provide the incentives for the Mass Save program (NStar, National Grid) encourage them to use along with their own people. Since I had seen some very satisfied customer reviews on Angie's List, and since he agreed to send out one of NSL's best crews I decided to schedule the work.
The crew arrived on-time and after introducing themselves, reviewing with me what they were going to do, they got to work. The job took two full days and throughout that time they were courteous, professional, and respectful of the house - putting on shoe covers every time they came into the house, and laying down plastic covering over the floors and rugs that I requested.
I was impressed with their careful and thorough work. None of the shingles they removed to blow insulation into the walls was damaged or broken (although it was to be expected that I would have to do some touch up painting in the Spring). The thermal barrier board insulation installed in the basement and behind the knee wall was carefully done, and all edges were sealed with foam insulation. For this part of the job, many of the spaces they worked in were not easy to get to or through, and both jobs took a full day to complete. Nevertheless, during my inspection I could see that everything had been done carefully and completely.
They performed a "blower air test" to determine how much outside air was coming into the house both before and after the job. The "Certificate of Insulation and Air Sealing Work" they gave me after the second test showed an 18% reduction. They also performed a combustion safety test on the furnace and water heater both before and after the job to make sure all combustion gasses were venting to the outside adequately.
So I'm comfortable recommending for Next Step Living to others for this kind of work. Just be sure you get a good crew.

They were great. Carolyn explained things in great detail and was quick to respond to emails and phone calls. They processed the paperwork needed to get the energy rebate - therefore the $4500 bill only cost us $2500; we did not have to put up the full $4500 initially and wait for the rebate.

This was our second renovation project with B&B because of the outstanding job they'd done for us renovating other parts of the house. As we expected, Mark and Scott approached the work as if they were renovating their own homes. They never hesitated to take additional time to solve a problem in the best way possible, and frequently made suggestions that improved the overall outcome. As with the first project, they were either on the job, or if work was being done by one of their subcontractors (also first-rate), they followed up to make sure the work was done properly and as planned. If you're reading this, as we read other reviews before starting our first project, one important consideration is cost. We've found B&B prices to be fair. They're neither the least, nor the most expensive renovation contractors around. Most importantly, as the result of the way in which they approach their work, we've always felt that we've gotten more than our money's worth.

They came out swiftly after waiting about 2-3 months for me to finish other work. Roger kept in constant contact with me and patiently answered all my questions. Helped me to fill out paperwork to get gas company rebate. When they encountered a problem in the knee wall area they went out of their way to fix it so it wouldn't cost me money or time. Workers pleasant, respectful, and clean up well. Overall, very satisfied.
