    3G's Construction
Richard was thorough and communicative every step of the way. We always had his full attention... from problem-solving to timing to explaining to me all sorts of things unique to his trade. He encouraged feedback and accommodated my preferences as much as possible. His team was polite, friendly, articulate and everything they did was high quality. When some unexpected changes came up, he pushed through, took the heat and got us what we needed. Our new room is stunning and we are already thinking about the next project we can do with him.

Rich and his crew went through quite an exhausting ordeal with us, and we're glad he was by our side. We initially had some water damage due to ice dams from the tough winter of 2015. We knew we'd have to repair part of the ceiling of our living room, and potentially the floor of the same room. We were in for a big surprise. It turns out water had basically destroyed the whole ceiling, part of the roof, the entire floor of the living room, and the roof, floor and walls of the sun room beneath. It had also spread mold throughout the house. Rich worked very closely with our insurance to make sure we could get almost everything fully covered, and was very clear when something was beyond the approved scope. Additionally, when we had an absolute nightmare of a situation with the mold remediation company (Rainbow, but that's another review) he helped us get through the whole thing and keep the project going.
The whole project took much longer than anyone had hoped, due in part to the mold situation, and in part due to Rich's very serious car accident that slowed things up. That said, the work delivered was very high quality, Rich and the entire team were a joy to work with. The pricing was very fair, and they were consistently willing to work with us to find cost-effective solutions. The best was Rich working diligently through the insurance company to make sure all our costs were covered, and generally help smooth the process. When he quoted a price for something, that was the price, even if it ended up taking more time or effort than he'd anticipated. He didn't make excuses or nickel and dime us every time something became a challenge.
Rich is first and foremost a very fair, generous and thoughtful guy. He's a contractor we feel we can trust, and his team did great work. The nature of the project, and the ever expanding scope meant that scheduling things was challenging at times, and it was a bit of a start and stop job. Still, Rich and crew were great to work with, and we've already had him scope several other potential projects at our house. The rooms they worked on are now the nicest in our house, and we wish everything else looked as good as they do! I can't imagine looking to hire a different contractor for any future work, and would recommend Rich enthusiastically.

    Canty Brothers Construction

They say putting the words "Contractor" and "Trustworthy" together is an oxymoron. Well, John Canty and his crew proved us wrong. We found Canty Brothers here in Angie's list and a number of other contractors. We met with John and we talked about our plans to buy a fixer-upper.

We started by looking at old houses and John was kind enough to come with us to look at a couple of houses. Mind you that we were not under contract at that time and he just went out of his way to make sure that we pick a feasible project. None of the houses made sense to buy and fix so we ended up buying a vacant lot and we built a house from scratch.

We did not have a hefty budget but John worked with it to give us the house that we wanted. His budgeting is spot on. We went a little over our budget but that was completely our decision with the upgrades in our selections. If an allowance comes in at a lower cost, they will inform you about it and will use the money in other areas in the house. Whenever we are spending too much money on something or whenever we want something that we can't afford, he will bring us back to our senses. He just wants you to enjoy the house and not be house-poor in the end and we appreciate that very much.

My wife and I both work 8-5 shifts so we were not able to come to the site as often as we would like. We will just drop by in the evening to check on the progress when everyone is already gone. We did not have issues with John's crew and the Sub-contractors. We trusted that they will take care of everything and we were not disappointed.

I know that Sub-cons can be a pain sometimes but John and Tracy made sure that the kinks were fixed. There was one instance where John did not like how the HVAC unit in the attic was laid out so he asked the sub-cons to redo it and push it further to make the attic more functional. These are things that you won't see or use often but I think attention to those kind of detail tells you what kind of company John runs.

Towards the end of the project, we had a huge issue with our sewer. John made a ton of effort driving to meetings and meeting with people in an effort to convince the town to not dig the street. We ended up losing that battle but we appreciate all the effort. You will not get this effort from 95% of the contractors out there.

This project was not at all problem-free but we were able to iron out the issues and in the end, both sides were satisfied. It was a very long journey. If we were to do it again, there is no question that we will call John to build our next house. Thank you Canty Brothers for building our beautiful house!

    The Curtice Group
I was impressed by how thorough he was in looking over my house and considering options for where a 3/4 bath could be added.  When he checked the basement to see how pipes could be connected up, he identified several problems with possible options, and came up with a feasible solution.  I don't think an architect would have so quickly ruled out potential plans that would not have worked in reality.
It was very helpful, and eye-opening, to receive a cost estimate for the addition.  Due to the cost, I have postponed this project, but the plans I received were an excellent start, and I think I could work with him in the future to refine those plans to something more in line with what I envisioned.

    Built To Last Construction, LLC
We originally hired this contractor as we knew someone currently using them and at the time that their house was being worked on, the work seemed good and they had no issues with the contractor (which in the end didn't turn out well for these people as they had similar issues with this contractor).  Unfortunately, once we hired him to do some work, he left that job site unfinished and began working on ours.  We had some remaining remodeling projects around the house that we didn't have time for having a newborn at home so we hired Zach to finish the last remaining projects.  Perhaps it was the lack of sleep of having a 2 week old but now looking back on the quality of work, we never would have allowed things to pass our inspection.  I would never recommend him and am highly disappointed with their quality of work.  We purchased majority of the items he needed ourselves:  tile, grout, cabinets, kickboards, paint, railing spindles, etc. so he wasn't making many purchases out of his own pocket, however, he seemed very concerned with money and requested the remainder of the amount be paid even though the work wasn't even half way done. Below is our comments on a few of the items he worked on for us:
We hired him to install a couple cabinets in our kitchen, install kickboards around all cabinets, install handles on all cabinets, tile the backsplash, install hood over oven, install a new railing on our staircase, replace a backdoor threshold.
Installation of kitchen cabinets and handles - overall they look like they were done well, considering that our house was built in 1900 and no walls or floors are particularly level.  Installation of handles went fine, however, one of our handles was scratched and Zach said he'd go to the store and swap out for us.  He then told me they wouldn't let him exchange it and that scratched handle went missing.
Backdoor threshold - Terrible.  He should have removed the old threshold and installed a new metal/solid wood threshold but instead he used an indoor threshold and stapled it over the existing outdoor threshold. I could have done that myself and he should have done it correctly.
Railing - Sloppy, told me the railing only had to be a certain height despite my own research proving him wrong.
Overall, he seemed friendly but it turned out that he wasn't a very honest person and based on his lack of punctuality and responsiveness and quality of work, I would not recommend him.

I scheduled an appointment for 9am 7/13/13 with Jeff to give me an estimate.  At 9:15 - still no Jeff.  I tracked down his phone number; called Jeff; and when he answered, he proceeded to tell me that he was "going to call me" - that he had a conflict in scheduling (Do you think he may  have known this before I called him!)  Then he went on to tell me to take pictures of the area we wanted remodeled and send to him.  He could do a rough estimate from that and may then come out and take measurements.  Forget it Jeff.  Not a good way to start a working relationship.  Do you think I would trust you with my most valuable investment when you I can't even trust you to meet an appointment.  No way!  Angie's List patrons beware of this one and stay far, far away.  There are plenty of reliable and professional contractors.  Don't waste your time with this one.  Next!

Fortini and Harris were integrally involved with every aspect of our project from design through completion.
They supplied facts and options to help us make all the important decisions on the project.  They are not the least expensive contractors around, but in our opinion none others that we met brought the same committiment to quality. They showed us where it was wise to trim costs and where it was not.  They directed us to an outstanding but cost concious kitchen design firm. Every subcontractor on the job was an excellent professionals in their fields, from electrician, to plumber, to HVAC.  When unexpected issues arose (they discovered mold in the attic) they got it  fixed within our project timeframe ( we had moved out of the house for 6 months for the major construction) and budget in mind. Our project was completed five years ago and we still have relationships with all of the subcontractors we met.  But, perhaps the most outstanding thing about working with Fortini and Harris is their integrity.  To this day, if we have any issue with anything to do with the project, issues arising from normal wear and tear, we can call them and they respond. We know many friends who have lived through big projects, but I do not anyone else who can say that.

    J.S. Hough
Overall, my experience with J.S. Hough was excellent.
The bathroom came out beautiful and I am very happy with the workmanship. Everything is solid, straight, and even. The finished tile and trim look great, and I haven't noticed any flaws. Water drains correctly off of the tile bench in the shower.
I worked with Jeff from J.S Hough and he was very responsive and concerned with how I wanted everything built and installed. He would make it a point to work out any details in the morning and would contact me to let me know his status. This being the only bathroom, he went out of his way to make sure that we were as comfortable as possible during the renovation. He had temporatily installed the toilet multiple times even though he was not the licensed plumber. The plumber I had contracted myself did not meet his schedule on multiple occasions and Jeff was flexible in working around that schedule. He noticed that the shower valve was installed lower than normal, and agreed to stop work for the day so that I could move the shower valve. He definitely went out of his way to make sure I was happy with the finished work.

    HRH Construction Inc
HRH was the contractor assigned to us under the NStar rebate program and we could not have been happier with their work.  They were very helpful in accommodating the urgency of our situation into their schedule.  They were extremely courteous, professional and cleaned up everything after they were done. I would not hesitate to use this company again.

    Custom Concepts
We needed to completely rebuild our home so that we could take care of an 88 year old father. We had special requirements which had to be met. Custom Concepts not only helped us to plan and design a home where we could all live together yet have our own space but they built it for us as well. The entire process from beginning to end with Custom Concepts was truely a great experience. We were kept informed every step of the way of all progress and of any issues that needed to be addressed. We found the workers to be highly-skilled professionals who pay close attention to every detail and their work is impeccable. We would rate Custom Concepts with an A+ and would not hesitate to use them again.
