    Accelerate Energy
I imagine the work is fine... time will tell... but they crushed my hydrangea, then trampled all the plants in front and side of my house except the large well established shrubs, and I just discovered they hit my mailbox/ wooden post. Their initial response was they were not responsible because they have to cover everything with plastic. "That is why we have you sign a waiver". Absolutely no regard for damages done and no apology. I became angry at their response, they backpedeled a bit and paid for the bush. I discovered the other damage including the mailbox after they left.

Everything went as expected and professional from making the appt, the work being done and even the office confirming all went well! Would absolutely recommend and hire again! They made this process so easy thankfully!! Being a Medically Retired Military family and purchasing our first home, they all were extremely professional as if they were handling their own family members. Thank You!!

    Rogers Insulation Specialists
I did not use them since they no longer do foam insulation, but the owner John just spent 15 minutes with me talking about attic insulation. He knew he wasn't getting a job out of it, but he spent the time anyway. That's customer service. Thanks John. I would recommend them based solely based on that, and if his work is as good as his knowledge and customer service then it will be good.

We signed up with NSL to get an energy audit and quotes for solar panels and replacement windows.
    Sales process
First off, the quoting/sales process was arduous. A different person is sent for each item, each requiring a 2 hour visit (totally excessive) and "all decision makers" to be present. This is so they can get you to sign up on the spot. The Window and Solar visits were similar in that they were a LONG sales pitch. They were informative but they also sold you the gold plated options. For instance, the estimate for the replacement windows (the Cadillac model that they sell with argon gas and triple panes) came in at over $30k for 3 bays and 13 double hungs. In the end, we chose another vendor for less than a third of the cost and got perfectly good double pane Harvey windows. He also fixed one bay window with casements that NSL said had to be replaced. The solar quoting process was similar: high prices for questionably better products and LONG meetings. At the end of both meetings, the sales reps offered a 'sign now' discount of $1k or more. I disliked their 'salesy' tactics.
    Communications
Thoughout the sales, audit and improvement process, we felt like one hand didn't know what the other was doing. While the energy auditor was there, we said we were interested in windows. An NSL rep called *while the auditor was still in our house* to set up an appointment. We called to cancel one of the appointments a day before the meeting, someone took the message but never passed it along so the rep still showed up. After the improvements were done, we were trying to get a refund for an amount that was paid by the HEAT loan and by us. The account manager told us a check had been sent, but 2 weeks later no check. When we called back, she said she'd check on it. THREE weeks later, I called again and she said she'd have billing contact us. I didn't hear anything until I emailed her about it to confirm. When the billing rep finally called, it was clear the Account Manager had never filled them in on what was happening or checked on the check.

    Work Performed
We had NSL add insulation to the attic, seal cracks and joists in the basement and a few other energy saving items improvements identified in the energy audit. We'd been told that we needed to pull up some of the flooring in the unfinished attic to qualify. I rearranged the items in our attic to make this possible and pulled up some of the plywood. I was led to believe that I'd be able to put the plywood down over the new insulation. Not so: over a foot of insulation was blown in over the existing insulation. We'll never reclaim that storage space again. AFTER the fact, we were told that lots of folks build up their floor before hand to keep the storage space. The first time I went up in the attic after the work, I almost fell through the ceiling: they had pulled up more plywood to insulate around, and build a cover for, our house fan. When they put the plywood back, the could no longer attach it to the joists so they pulled it back a few inches. Not only did this create a trip hazard (they didn't cut the plywood, just overlapped it) but now the last 14" was not supported and started cracking under my weight! NSL said they'd send someone out to fix this, but this was delayed due to the MassSave review of the work.
Since MassSave paid for a large chunk of the insulating work, they came and inspected the work performed by NSL. They told us that there were issues that NSL would have to come and repair: they over estimated the work performed and did not do as much as they said. The report also said that they did not properly insulate some areas. In the end, we are supposed to see NSL yet again to repair the issues I reported and the work identified by MassSave.
All in all, this was a long and frustrating experience. Nothing HORRIBLE, but high pressure sales, low quality work and a hassle around every corner.

    Green Star Foam
The reason I am writing this report now (well over 3 months later) is that with the December snow storm the true value of their work really became clear to me. While all other houses (including the roof of my orginal Cape) had icicles, the roof of the addition did not have a single one (i.e. no heat loss thru the roof). Unfortunately, due to the limited space in the crawlspace above my original house I am unable to have them spray insulation into that area. Overall they did a great job. They came when they said they would, completed the job on time and were on budget. The crew was very pleasant and explained the job in detail to me. I would highly recommend them.

    Green Star Foam
We had our house inspected a few weeks ago and our inspector found mold on the roof bays. After a thorough mold inspection it was determined that the reason for the mold growth was due to a furnace issue in the basement that caused excessive humidity in the home which then migrated up into the attic, condensed on the roof bays and then caused mold. We fixed the furnace but were still left with big black mold stains in the attic. We were advised at the time to contact several mold removal firms to get prices for mold removal and then to call Greenstar Foam Insulation. The mold removal prices were ridiculous and they all said that the big stains in the would still be visible after the job was completed. That is when we called Greenstar Foam Insulation. Mark from Greenstar arrived on-site promptly when he said he was going to. He measured the attic, educated us on about foam insulation and told us that Greenstar personnel would kill the mold and then spray the attic with foam insulation. This would prevent mold growth ever again, give a visually appealing attic and in turn give us a better insulated home. He also told us about the rebates for foam insulation that our gas company would give us to do this job. The cheapest bid from the mold removal companies was $5,500. It was a no-brainer to go with Greenstar who was almost half the cost of the cheapest mold removal firms. They arrived on-site when they said they would, they set up in a about an hour, they were courteous and professional. They killed the mold with a fungicide and then sprayed foam insulation on the roof bays. They were here and gone in less than 5 hours. The attic has never looked better, it has never been warmer and our heating bill just came in and it is nearly half of what it was last month. Furthermore, we are also getting a large rebate to boot. We are so happy with this transaction, we love Greenstar!!
