Excellent! Sander is fabulous. I first used him a few years back for remodeling a bathroom in my condo and he has remained the first person I call for just about anything related to the unit. He really helped me make some good decisions on the bathroom that helped save money. He is responsive, trustworthy, reasonable, helps keep costs down, has excellent ideas and does quality work.

    Bruin Corp of Framingham
I'll provide more updates on this project as it progresses. For now, I wanted to comment on how pleased we are on how quickly and professionally Bruin has been. Returned our request for a quote quickly and scheduled a time to come out to our home. Kept the appointment, was very thorough, and offered great advice and guidance. They also helped guide us through the process of engaging with Mass Save to get additional funding from the electric company (this is a pay-in fund unique to Massachusetts).

    Archadeck of Central Mass
In a word: OUTSTANDING! I was so nervous interviewing contractors because I've heard horror stories of estimates vs.actual costs, not knowing when a crew would show up, shoddy workmanship, messy conditions, etc. I'm happy to say that wasn't the case with Archadeck's Bob Grimm and his contracted crew!

There were a couple of things that set Archadeck of Central Mass apart from the other contractors I interviewed. While some contractors gave estimates over the phone, Bob came on site and took detailed measurements and pictures. No other contractor spent as much time walking me through everything as Bob did. At that first meeting, he spent over an hour discussing with me all sorts of options, and had many pictures of past projects to help aid me in choosing what I wanted. He asked me what my budget was and said he would work up options that fell within the budget. Once he had a firm grasp of what I wanted, he came back about a week later with a detailed computer model of two options that fit within my budget.

One very important aspect of Archadeck is that the price is NOT AN ESTIMATE. The price is determined at the start and once you sign the contract, the price doesn't change. If Bob underestimates material and labor costs on the actual project, he eats the added cost. That was a major reason why I chose Archadeck. The peace of mind knowing what I would be paying in total was much appreciated. Archadeck was not least expensive price I was given. Out of 4 quotes, Archadeck came in 2nd highest. It was worth every penny! Archadeck did have the best warranty for their work out of the four contractors. Archadeck also provided a written guarantee of project completion. So if anything happened to Bob or any of the builders, the project would get completed.

I also appreciated that Bob never tried to "upsell" me on any materials. He knew what my budget was (25k), and was great at giving me options on where I could save a little money. For example, I wanted the stairwell to be a maintenance-free material. That cost more than regular wood, but I was able to offset it by just using plywood on the deck floor and covering it with a laminate flooring at the end of the project. Another cost savings was using my own electrician vs. having Bob bring in an electrician. All of these little suggestions he gave me were helpful in keeping me within budget so that I could allocate the money on the pricier materials that I really wanted.

Before the project could start, I needed to provide a plot plan so that Bob could pull the necessary building permits. Lo and behold, there were no plot plans in my mortgage documents. Being a duplex, I checked with my neighbor - who didn't have one either. Apparently past projects had been done before I bought the property, but the Town Inspector at the time didn't require a plot plan. The current Town Inspector did require one. Bob was fantastic. He found me a great surveyor, arranged for him to come out the next day, and that surveyor completed the plot plan within five days after that. So the start of the project was only delayed by one week. I appreciated the fact that Bob took care of finding and scheduling the surveyor for me.

Communication was outstanding. Nothing is more frustrating than not knowing if the crew is going to be there or not from one day to the next. Bob made sure to call me at least every other day (daily if needed) to update me on the progress of the project and let me know any time the crew wasn't coming that day. Due to the fabulous winter weather we had this year, there was only a couple of days that the crew couldn't come due to inclement weather. Otherwise they generally worked Monday - Friday.

Now to the crew. The actual crew that built the porch was led by Bill and his two assistants (both named Jay!) I was thoroughly impressed by their professionalism and workmanship. Even their conversation amongst themselves was never profane or obnoxious. They never played loud music or made a mess when they had to come into the house to use the bathroom. They were always polite and did a great job cleaning up after themselves at the end of each work day. They went above and beyond all the time. One day my sister came over with her 4 year old and 16 month old children. The porch was pretty much done except for no door was yet installed. Even though we kept the kids away from that part of the house, the Jays screwed in a piece of plywood over the door opening for safety reasons just in case one of the kids wandered out onto the partially finished porch. (One of Jays even helped my sister carry in the "pack and play" that she brought with her, and insisted on setting it up for her)

From start to finish, this process has been enjoyable. I felt no stress at all and was very happy with the final product. It is my pleasure to write this report and recommend Archadeck!

    Joe Test Carpentry & Roofing
We felt that the pricing was reasonable and it has held up great, so we are glad we did it. He was great. He is very old school and we liked that he was onsite and we liked that it was his son Cory that did the labor. We have done two additions and the windows with him and we always go back to him. He has actually done the porch twice and that is how long we used him. His prices are very good because we still do compare prices.

    McE's Home Services
Brian was quick to respond to the initial email and came out within 48 hrs to give me an estimate on the project. His helper did the sanding and painting. The paint match (grey) was very good and the overall quality of the work was also very good.

My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is that I was never sure when Brian or his co-worker was coming to work on the deck. He came over one day to powerwash the deck, and then I didn't hear anything for about 2 weeks. Finally I called him to get an update and he explained that I was next on his schedule. The project was finished later that week.

The price was reasonably comptitive I believe. My brother has a slightly larger deck than mine and has his done by a different contractor for $700.00.

    CASE HANDYMAN & REMODELING
The estimate went well, Jim was punctual, professional, and thorough. He was very clear about the work to be performed and the cost involved. However, I elected to go with another provider, because Jim attempted to recruit me (soft sell, but still a pitch) into a multi-level-marketing program. He described to me what the product involved (some acai berry snake oil something or other) was able to do for him, describing a near-miraculous recovery from a shoulder injury, and how much money the top sellers made in a year. I considered this to be completely inappropriate and unprofessional. I invited Jim into my home to give me an estimate, not an unrelated sales pitch for what I consider to be a scam. Had I known he would attempt to recruit me into that program, I would not have considered him as a provider at all, much less gotten an estimate.

    JMS Partners Inc
I found JMS here, called them and 3 other contractors to give us an estimate to remodel a home we wanted to purchase. JMS called me back within 24 hours, the rest of the contractors either didn't call or took 4-5 days. The home was in foreclosure and horrible shape, and the remodel was way out of our budget, so we decided against it. We found the perfect house, but the front porch isn't built or secured to the house properly. I called John at JMS again, I admit I was afraid that he would be a "typical contractor" and blow me off since he had already given me one estimate on a house I didn't own. What a surprise! He squeezed it in to his schedule as we were on a time crunch to sign our P&S. We are 3 weeks away from closing on the house, and I will definitely have JMS do the work when we get settled in. John Tartaglione has been responsive, kind and helpful, I really look forward to having him work on our home. If his work is as good as our initial experience, I know we will be thrilled.
