Chimney & Fireplace reviews in Hanson

  • There's an old saying - You get what you pay for - that is certainly true here. I needed smoke-tite applied to the smoke chamber in my fireplace. I found Ultimate Chimney and they quoted me a really low price so I went with them. They came out two days later and did the work. Before applying the smoke-tite, he told me he had to clean the chimney, which took him about 10 minutes. I asked why it had to be cleaned and he said smoke-tite will only adhere to the surface of the smoke chamber if it's clean. So I agreed to pay for the cleaning. After the smoke-tite was applied, I was told to wait 2 days before using the fireplace. To be cautious, I waited 4 days and then used it twice. The third time I used it, a large (4"x 5") chunk and several small pieces of smote-tite fell into the fireplace when I closed the flue. This was when I called Ultimate Chimney for help. During my first call on a Monday, I was told that the incident would be given to the manager for review and he would call me back within 24 hours. By that Friday (the Friday before Thanksgiving) I still had not heard from anyone so I called back and was told that all of the technicians were busy fixing carbon monoxide problems for customers. Funny, I hadn't heard that there was a CM outbreak in our area. I was again told that the manager would call me back and I was assured that someone would be out before Thanksgiving, which proved to be a lie. My third call was on the Friday after Thanksgiving to talk to the manager. I was told that the manager was "not available" but that the message would be passed on and I would be contacted as soon as possible. It's the following Tuesday and still no call. As far as I'm concerned, these people did a terrible job - probably not cleaning the chimney properly - and now they do not want to take responsibility for bad work or service. I paid them nearly $1,000 and now I cannot use my fireplace which I use for heat in the fall/winter. They basically have stolen my money and I am left without a fireplace and will probably have to call a reputable guy to fix their shoddy work, costing me even more money at the worst time of the year. Bottom line - STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE. There are much better companies out there who will not rip you off and will do better work. I just wish I had gone with one of them.

  • The most thorough chimney experience I've ever had and I have lived in my home for 20 years. The sweep who came was thorough - spent alot of time discussing with me how best to light the fire in my chimney to accommodate the damper placement, reviewed everything on the chimney - inside and out and was honest about what needed to be done.

  • If it were possible to give a rating lower than F, these people would get it. As I'm thinking of words to describe the company as a whole I'm coming up with disorganized, unprofessional, dim-witted, shady…I think you get it. Back in early September, I contacted these people for a very simple job - spray a sealant over the chimney box/liner. It started out bad with them so, really, I should have known better. I first called to schedule an estimate and when we finally agreed on a date/time that worked for them, I asked a friend to meet them at my home since I was going to be away on business. She cleared her schedule to accommodate them but they called just before the scheduled time to say they would be over an hour late. My friend couldn't stay so we rescheduled again at a time that fit them. My friend again agreed to meet them and tried to document what they said but according to her, they were disorganized and "kinda dopey". They quoted her two prices - $400 for the materials they currently use or $700 for a new material that they haven't used yet. I wanted to go with the less expensive option because I'm new to fireplaces and wasn't sure how often I'd use it. Also, I'm thinking of going with a gas insert next year so I didn't want to overspend on this. Most importantly, I wanted it ready for a housewarming party I'm having this weekend so $400 seemed right. Unfortunately, when I contacted the office, they told me they would not honor that verbal quote and would only give me a quote for the new product. Now, I hate to accuse people of being shady but I believe that's a good example of it. Here's my second mistake - I went with the higher quote and scheduled a time to have them come out. Today was that day...almost 2 months after I first called them. Again, I arranged to have someone meet them since this day worked for them, not me. And this morning, at 8:00am, they called to cancel! Apparently, they FORGOT to order the new sprayer for the new material (this is where I believe calling them dim-witted is justified). And before I hung up on him, the owner had the nerve to say, "Yeah, the girls in the office told me you'd be mad." Seriously? Listen, when I first came to Angie's List and saw their bad reviews I thought maybe it's a fluke. Trust's not. They are not a good organization to do business with. Save yourself the aggravation of dealing with them and find another good chimney crew somewhere else, which is what I'll be doing today. Sadly, I won't be able to get someone in before my event this weekend but that's the price I pay for ignoring the advice of others.

  • I hired Chimney Chap to conduct a fireplace cleaning and the work was very thorough. They also inspected my furnace and fireplace  flues and recommended future repairs.  The company also provides a video of the inspected areas, so that homeowners do not need to solely rely on the word of the service person. I would recommend using them and intend to hire them to conduct the future reparis.

  • Mr. Sarras came by unprompted & gave my husband a very high quote to do some repair work on our chimney. He attempted to schedule a work date with my husband, but my husband told Mr. Sarras that he wanted to discuss it with me first. I emailed Mr. Sarras the next day and informed him that we do not wish to schedule the work at that time as we would be getting other estimates. We would let him know if we'd like the work done. Mr. Sarras emailed me back & told me to let him know as soon as possible if we would like to book the service as he was booking 3 weeks out. I received other estimates & we discovered that Mr. Sarras was charging too much for the work we needed done. Thank you.

  • I had a great experience with this company.  I had them come for a simple chimney sweep but they caught a huge issue. I needed the work and they did it right away.  The technicians were professional, punctual, and very easy to work with. This company deserves an A rating!

  • Absolutely satisfied with the entire experience.  Great quality service in that they came out for the job overview and estimate right away, started the job when they said they would and stuck to their estimate.  There was no skimping on the base products that will ensure that the patio and walkway last!  I was here every step of the way and watched three generations of men endure 90 degree temperatures, and rain.  This is the work ethic you don't see much anymore and makes this company stand out above the rest--good old fashion quality work.  Everything looks beautiful - beyond my expectations!

  • The conversation I had with the company went poorly. The woman who called to schedule the appointment told me that an estimate would cost "approximately" $150. That seems fair as it will take some time to determine what needs to be done. However, I wanted to confirm that if I did hire the company, the fee I paid for the estimate would be applied to the bill (if I did not hire the company I would obviously have no claim to the estimate fee). The company representative told me that it would be determined on a "case by case" basis as to whether the estimate fee would be applied to the overall cost of the work. When I asked for a few examples of when the fee would not be applied to the cost of the work, she could not give me one. When I asked that she speak to the technicians and ask for an example, she said even the technicians didn't know. Does not sound consistent, fair or like a good business practice. I'll take my business elsewhere.
