Doctors Urge Discretion When Placing Ear Tubes in Children

We were in Dr. Rhein’s office for THREE HOURS, most of the time spent alone with my daughter in a small, windowless room. Dr. Rhein is the only doctor in the practice, yet he attends to several patients simultaneously, making for extremely long waiting periods in between the actual ‘appointment’ part of our time in the office. The three hours went something like this: Discussion with Dr. Rhein: 10-15 mins., alone: 5-30 mins., nurse performs test, 10 mins., alone: 5-30 mins. Repeat until 3 hours have gone by. Of course, the middle of the appointment was punctuated by approximately half an hour of panic and refusal to do the RAST test on the part of my daughter. At times I wondered whether the appointment had ended without my knowing, and almost walked out. Since my daughter had to go without antihistamines for 8 days previous to the appointment, I decided to grit my teeth and get the appointment over with, no matter how long it took. And eventually, someone would come back in. Dr. Rhein was surprised by my daughter’s reaction to the RAST tests, although I had explained to him in advance about her extreme fears and sensitivities. The nurses and office staff, however, were quite sympathetic. My daughter, aside from the panic attack, was a real trooper – reading a chapter book and then playing with the variety of blocks in the room without complaining of hunger or boredom, which I know I certainly felt. The appointment took place right after my daughter’s first day of first grade. It was 95 degrees out. Overall, it would have been a better and more agreeable use of our time to spend the afternoon at the pool.
