Music Instruction reviews in Framingham

Stephen has a wonderful way of getting kids to relax and enjoy the piano process while increasing their abilities and focus on making the pieces sound better.  We have enjoyed having him as a teacher and look forward to the years ahead.
He works with each child at their current level and strives to make them want to improve without forcing them into rigid structure, but rather finding what needs to happen and making a way to work through the issue.  His method is extremely sound for any student wanting to learn and improve at playing the piano, and has been created through years of his own excellent experience and training.

I have studied piano with Stephen James for many years, and he has my highest recommendation.
Stephen has excellent academic credentials (a masters degree in piano and a doctorate in composition from BU) and  teaching experience (he has taught music theory and piano performance at several Massachusetts colleges and universities).
Stephen has performed on many concert series in New England, and has a devoted fan base. His compositions have been performed by a number of ensembles and soloists.
Stephen's approach to both teaching and performance is strongly influenced by Daoism. He helps students recognize ways in which their practicing and playing are out of balance, and strive for less forced and more expressive performances.
As a teacher, Stephen is positive and supportive; lessons with him are very enjoyable.

We looked at the music I have been working on: In the Hall of the Mountain King from the Peer Gynt Suite.  My challenge is trying to master my note reading. There are a lot of alternating sharps and naturals. I'm struggled, but my aha moment was when we paused so I could explain where I was experiencing difficulty. I hummed the melody out loud without looking at the music to imprint in my mind what that particular piece should sound like and then I turned my attention to the written notes and found the spot on the page where I would pick up the next bar of notes. For me that was a milestone in my goal to be able to read and understand music. I still have a ways to go. But that was a small but great moment for me. And Peter was there to share my joy.
I love my teacher. I love the school.

Generally very responsive to set up an appointment, but very expensive. I'm sure great teachers and staff, unfortunately we could not afford it.
