  • About 3 years ago... A contractor that I was working with tore off our roof, and neglected to cover it properly with Tarps. As a result, there was a horrendous rainstorm that flooded my home and caused over $20K worth of damages. I talked to the builder, and he gave me the name of his insurance company. (Arbella) When I called them, I was told that the usual custom is to file a claim with MY homeowners, and that they would "subrogate" the claim to the builders carrier. I called Met and asked them if this was indeed the case, and the claims person replied that it was. I asked whether there would be any adverse impact on my premium, since I had heard horror stories about how your premiums rise when you file a claim. I was told that there would not be if the claim was subrogated to another company. Recently... I noticed that Met had been charging me more and more for various policies. ( I have two homes and three cars with them. I also had an umbrella policy with them, but they cancelled me when I moved my car insurance to Progressive and saved about $1700 a year. ( read that right.) It would have been nice of them to tell me that they cancelled my umbrella. I found out that they have been charging me about an additional $500 per year because of the claim that was subrogated. Apparently, Arbella didn't have as good a policy as I had with Met, so Met ended up out of pocket. When this happens, they don't tell you, they just jack your rate up. Shame on me for not seeing it earlier. Despite multiple attempts to speak with Exec's there... no calls back from any of them. Final bone I have to pick with them is the way they slip in "hurricane/windstorm" exemptions for my home on the cape. My insurance ROSE from $1800 per year to over $2500 a year (in one year... 2010 to 2011) AND my windstorm deductable went from $16000 to $47000 overnight. (for anyone that has had this happen... call Paul Peters Insurance in Mashpee or Falmouth, and they can hook you up with Lloyds of London, who will provide a more sane level of deductable for comparable money) Avoid Met if you can.
