    Higgins Floors LLC
Gareth and his crew showed up on time each day, were clean and professional and did exactly what they said. They installed the new floor and started to sand the old floors the first day. Finished sanding and put the sealer on the second day. 2nd and 3rd coats on the next 2 days. It all went very smoothly and we are happy. One thing that worked well for us is I removed the existing moulding first before Gareth installed the new flooring. And then I put new moulding in, which made it look fantastic. And do expect to walk around with sock feet for a full week after the floors are finished. We did that and the finish hardened nicely and is perfect now.

    Straight Shooters General Contracting LLC
A neighbor of ours used the Straight Shooters on a master bath remodel and we were really impressed, so we decided to give them a call. The project went as smooth as we could ask for, from the estimate phase to the final sign off by the building inspector. They are very easy to work with, Sean and his crew were able to answer all of our questions, and had very creative ideas on use of tiles, colors, and cabinet accessories. The crew was very neat and clean, and that included the electrical, hvac, and plumbing subcontractors as well. In the past we haven't had the best luck with contractors or for that matter subcontractors who cared about cleaning up after themselves, i.e. leaving cigarette butts all over the lawn, not vacuuming a work space, and so on. We recommend the Straight Shooters, and look forward to working with them in the future.

    Thomas J. Remodeling
Tom did a great job coordinating all the different providers needed to get the work done before our summer vacation. It was a big job, with lots of potential for hiccups along the way. The team demolished the old kitchen in a day, and proceeded to strip everything back all the way very rapidly. We had a doorway moved at the end of the room for the redesign. We had new wiring, we had significant rework to level the floor and install underfloor heating. There were many lasers to ensure everything was level and true, especially the ceiling, which needed a little extra work than anticipated to make sure it was level. The guys would turn up on time each day, were always friendly and were happy to explain what they were doing. They all cared about the work they did, with a good level of professional pride. The electrical and plumbing contractors arrived promptly when they were needed, and we didn't have to worry about any of the project management that we'd been dreading with the remodel. We chose to install some high quality cabinets from Tom's recommendation, and we absolutely love the result. We had only a couple of minor hiccups along the way, and each time we worked through it with a quick meeting and rethink. We went a little beyond the original scope because we asked for some extra changes, and we really appreciated the flexibility from Tom on accommodating these small last-minute changes.

    Fresh Start Contracting
Fresh Start was the general contractor for our kitchen remodel:  installed hardwood floors, additional electric subpanel, moved plumbing, installed tile/stone/glass backsplash, carpentry to finish the skylight trim, drywall and painting of kitchen walls.  Time ($65/hr) and materials plus 20% seemed excessive, where the 20% charge was applied to subcontractors.  For example, the backsplash cost $1,600+20%:
    - $1,200 for the labor (Julio Designs), plus 20%
    - $400 for the tile (Roma Tile, Watertown Tile), plus 20%
The electrician was $3,800 (Superior Electrical), plus 20%.
The worst part was the poor communication and the lack of transparency in the expense items.
We do not recommend this company.

    Melanie Murphy Interiors
Melanie is so easy to work with and enthusiastic. ?I will readily admit I do not have a lot of decorating sense or vision, but she easily figured out my style by showing me different ideas and helping me figure out what I was looking for. ?She has access to unique furniture lines that truly can make a statement. ?She is now helping me with paint colors, lighting and carpeting with a major renovation we are doing. I am paralyzed at times by some of the decisions and she has helped me to make decisions that I will not regret later. ?She has a great eye and is thorough and careful with her decisions. ?I will definitely be continuing to use Melanie on future house projects.

    FLOORING SHOWCASE INC
Kevin was helpful and friendly as a salesperson.  He quoted almost all the porcelain tiles as $6 per square foot.  In the rush to pay the written estimate, we failed to notice that the actual cost per square foot for one of the tiles was $9.12 per square foot.  That was the beginning of a series of unfortunate incidents.  For example, we were told to expect a one week turnaround time for tile delivery only to find out at the last minute that one of the tiles that we chose was no longer available.  The good news is that we picked an alternative that was pricier and Flooring Showcase ate the price difference and the separate delivery cost was waived (a savings of $40).  Second, when the contractor opened the box of tiles, he discovered that some were cracked or broken.  He also determined that the tiles did not cover the required square footage.  Kevin indicated this experience of unusable tile to be unusual and we had to eat the cost of tile replacements.  To explain the shortage, he also said that the tiles were not exactly 12x12.  I found this confusing since the price was per square foot.  Anyway, again, we not only had to eat the cost of additional tiles, but also had to scramble to procure them.
It was a stressful and disorganized experience that I do not care to repeat.  I will use another vendor for tiles.

    R & R Floor Co
Ron was very prompt in returning my initial phone calls. After that, we used email, and he was again always quick to respond. The job had to be spread out over 5 days to allow for sanding, a coat of stain and then three coats of polyurethane varnish. These floors were especially challenging as there were long gashes from a carpet installation over thirty years ago, as well as prominent pet stains. Ron explained just what we could expect from him regarding these flaws in the floors and proposed using a provincial stain to minimize their appearance. He demonstrated what natural stain vs. provincial would look like, and the choice was obvious. The result was excellent, and we were glad we took his advice, even though it was more expensive. Ron was on time every morning and always cleaned up thoroughly.  There was almost no dust left over.  He explained very clearly what he was doing and was always very pleasant to talk with.  We have hired him to do at least 2 more rooms next month.

Three Masons Professional Handyman & Masonry LLC
The dryer vent in a condo constructed in the early 70s consisted of a spiral plastic tube that went up the wall and across the ceiling and emerged under a balcony where it could not be seen. Not to code and a definite fire hazard. I had two other contractors quote the work, but they were definitely hackers and refused to take down the cupboards above the dryer, required to do a good job. Two other general contractor/handyman businesses would not even come to look. John Mason worked with me to find the best solution and it was clear from the outset that he would do a high quality job.
The OK from the condo board came only the day before the tentative date, and they wanted a different solution than we had  proposed. John agreed to the new solution and only slipped the start date by one day. When we opened the ceiling, we found that we had to change plans again. The guy in charge, Drew, was able to accommodate the new plan and completed the work in one very long day. Work involved patching holes in walls and ceiling, also well done.
The tile in the corner of the tub/shower had caved in and was a potential leak. John removed the tile himself to make sure it didn't break. He recommended that we re-grout the whole tub and lower half of the wall in the small room so it would all match, which I agreed to. Job was well done and looks great.
Drew and his helper Colin were a delight to work with. Polite, efficient, and willing to take my suggestions even though I am female. Clean up was excellent.

    R & R Floor Co
I found Ron to be polite, organized and very helpful when we discussed the condition of the floors. Since I have used him before, I was completely comfortable having him come and do the work while the family was away. I have been very pleased with the results and highly recommend him.  The floors were lightly sanded and one coat of finish was applied.
