Stone & Gravel reviews in Cambridge

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • We spent 2 years renovating our house leaving our yard a giant mud puddle. Over the course of the winter, we worked with Ron to develop the landscaping plan. In the spring, his team re-leveled the entire lot, installed 2 patios with pavers, sod, a fence, prepped for a shed and put in a new asphalt driveway and vegetation. We are very happy with the final product.

  • The contractor did an excellent job. They were on time and performed as promised. I note that the concrete storm water swale initially was not installed properly by their subcontractor so they immediately fixed the installation at their own cost without any hassle, which was much appreciated.

  • John and his team were great to work with. John's workman ship is top notch, plus he's good a good eye for what will look good and what will not. So, he will make his suggestions, but doesn't pressure you into choosing one way or the other. He's very professional, provided a fair scope of work, and showed solid knowledge of the trait.
Plus, it is worth mentioning that a few days later after the work was completed I needed to make a change and John was very good about it, he was very accommodating.
All in all, a great experience. Would highly recommend them.

  • The biggest concern was the front brick pathway. It had warped so that ice pooled in spots and water didn't really drain through. They walked me through that all of the pathways were a problem but didn't try to upsell me on the paths that weren't yet buckling (driveway, side of house). They did an excellent job and it held up for the past winter. Because my sidewalk slopes toward the house rather than away, they also let me know that if/when the city gets around to fixing the sidewalks, I will likely need to fix the brick pathway again. I will definitely hire them again for that work.
For the cobblestone border, we had a miscommunication about which edges I wanted done. It ended up being more than the original quote due to that, but that's completely understandable. It looks really nice.
The one area I was less pleased was the plantings, but that is my fault. I was in a rush and didn't spend enough time communicating what I wanted and just had them pick the plants themselves. The dogwood tree has survived the winter and is about to bloom, so yay!

Update in 2016: Held up well during the winter!

  • Jeff came to my house the end of March to give me an estimate for replacing the chipped blue-stone stairs in the front of my house. He suggested granite would be better as it would match the curbing around the front yard.  The patio in the back yard was  small and starting to sink in one corner.  He gave me an estimate within a couple of days. It was comparable to other estimates. The work was delayed due to sewer/ water line  construction that was going on in the street. As soon as the street was passable, Jeff's crew came out. They removed the old blue-stone steps and existing railings in the front and replaced the steps  with granite and later put the railings back in place.
In the back yard, they removed the old patio. Part of an old sidewalk was also removed.  The patio was enlarged to meet up with the porch stairs and also to extend a little further into the yard. The bottom stair was cement and was too narrow. This stair was widened and a piece of blue-stone was put on it.  The patio is blue-stone also and a tapered curbing was put around it.  As the sidewalk was removed, the patio now meets up with the stairs from the porch
    It looks absolutely beautiful!
The work was done timely and carefully. They cleaned up everyday. It was a 2 or 3 day job and they showed up promptly.  Jeff offered several very good suggestions ie getting rid of the old sidewalk and widening the bottom stair. I would definitely recommend them.

  • I requested an estimate for a new patio and replacement of front blue stone steps. He came out promptly and gave me an estimate within several days. He also offered good ideas for the design of the patio and offered to remove an old shrub that was nearby.  I have used them in the past.

  • Unlike some of the pavers we spoke with, Mystic Paving was very willing to help us reconstruct our asphalt driveway with embedded brick sidewalk areas.  The brick areas had sunk relative to the asphalt, and the general suggestion was that we should eliminate the brick.  We weren't willing to do this and Mystic suggested we lay the brick over the asphalt base course to give it greater stability, sealing the brick joints with poly-sand.  We'll see how it does in the long run but so far it has held up well.
Mystic was also helpful in dealing with special cases such as the landscape timbers and a pipe chase under the new driveway for running a garden hose.  They were able to provide their own people to do the brickwork and arranged for a landscaping subcontractor to take care of the timber work in coordination with the paving work, saving us the trouble of hiring and scheduling a separate contractor.
Our driveway is in a particularly dense area of Cambridge, with many abutters and street parkers. Mystic worked with the Cambridge construction-parking-permit person to limit their use of on-street parking.  The driveway is also quite long and narrow and Mystic had the appropriate equipment to negotiate the small spaces.
We were also on a tight schedule with winter and the end of the paving season not far off, but Mystic was able to fit us in and complete the job quickly, limiting the amount of time we had to park on the street.
Overall, this was a pleasant experience with a complicated project that had the potential to be very unpleasant..

  • It was a big job and they were on top of it from beginning to end. They worked incredibly hard, in very cold weather, got the job done in a timely fashion, and for a great price. Fantastic. Really looks great. we are the envy of the neighborhood. And working with real stone cobbles is not an easy task.

  • John and his crew removed existing broken up cement, removed a few inches of dirt, laid down gravel, mesh wire and poured a new concrete floor all by hand. They removed an existing block patio and enlarged the one I had with brick. John was easy to work with, honest, very hard working and did a few small extras without an extra charge. The work they performed was great and I am pleased with the outcome I would recommend John and his crew. Noticed I included his crew, lots of the time the workers do not get recognized, these guys worked really hard were polite and friendly.

  • We discussed our options for surface types, pavers and patterns with the owner Dom and got estimates for the work. His crew was prompt, polite and worked efficiently.  We very happy with how well the surface under the pavers was prepared -- the site was thoroughly excavated and a good base of gravel & sand was applied. The new driveway and entryway looks great. We appreciated the crew's attention to detail.  For example, they suggested installing a few of the cobblestones on the boarder at ground level where we have to pull our trash cans out.
