General Contracting reviews in Cambridge

  • We had some water damage in our basement after a toilet overflowed and needed some of the baseboards removed. We hired We Show Up to replace them. Alan provided a quote over the phone and scheduled us for the next week. Unfortunately, one of his workers hurt his back the day before and they were not able to come, but Alan let me know the day before and apologized. We were able to reschedule for the next week. Mark, his assistant, showed up promptly, took measurements, and went and bought supplies. He worked cleanly and professionally. The baseboards look great and the price was very reasonable. Would certainly hire them again for another job.

  • I ran a large contracting business for many years so can be a bit picky and demanding. This project was quite challenging, but was done by HWP efficiently, cost-effectively, and in a very high quality manner. We worked primarily with Zana, who does most of the administrative work. Her husband, Francisco, sets up the work and heads up the crews. He was not always at our project, since I assume they may often have more than one going at a time, but that was never a problem. He was there whenever needed or requested. Our home is not small, was built in 1843, and although much has been replaced over the years, nothing is plumb or square. The window trim, some sills, and parts of the jambs were rotten, as were many of the corner boards of the house itself. We needed to remove the old wood and replace it with new. Zana and Francisco visited the home, reviewed the work, and gave us two proposals. One was an hourly rate for the carpentry work and the other was a fixed price for the painting of the entire house and trim. Both prices were very fair. They could not give us a fixed price on the carpentry work because we could not see what hidden work might be required or what we might discover. They did give us a "guesstimate" on how long the work might take, from which I could calculate a budget, and it turned out to be reasonably accurate. Much of the work required removal of rotten wood and trimming and shaping of the adjoining pieces. They made sure any gaps were filled and caulked. They also did a great job identifying areas we had not noticed and giving us options to replace entire areas, or just portions. For painting, everything was pressure-washed before the work began; many of our downspouts were removed to allow access to tight spots; and new wood received a primer and two coats. HWP worked around our schedule, which got pushed back a bit early on, and always showed up when they said they would. We had a crew that varied from two people to four. HWP is not a big company, but they are attentive and meticulous. I would definitely use them again!

  • Lio was great to work with. We have used him for several projects already. This project was trim and siding on an enclosed porch, and wood T&G ceiling. I am an architect so somewhat picky about the details. He asked the right questions, and made suggestions, that made the work come out great. He is patient, takes his time to do things right, and is very friendly. For our house, we just wanted simple finishes and details at a reasonable price, and Lio's team was a good fit. The projects he has done for us have been simple, durable, and economical. He also has good subs who are very responsive to him.

  • Netto is very responsive and helpful and prompt. He has a crew that is dedicated to pleasing. Alex, the main foreman on my job, was great. I found them in the early winter and they couldn't get started until the Spring. I had some repairs done before I met them and Netto wanted to prime those repairs so they wouldn't be exposed to the weather over the winter, especially to the snow. They power washed the wood and primed it. In the Spring, they did another thorough power washing of the entire house before priming and painting. They addressed all of my questions and were very helpful and cooperative. I got three bids and there's was the best. I wanted some wood repairs done and wanted all the window trim replaced. Netto's carpenters were very skilled and efficient. The crew was on site early each day, weather permitting, and worked full days. The house looks great!

  • Responsiveness and professionalism very poor. They talked up a good sales pitch to get the contract, but then once signed, rarely delivered on any verbal commitments. They were very punctual with sending us invoices for progress payments, but very slow in responding to requests, if at all. We were especially disappointed at their lack of professionalism and their need for constant reminders to deliver what they promised. The job was fairly simple and we were verbally quoted 2-3 months for project completion. They took over 1 year to finally complete all the requirements of the contract. (The contract was signed in 9/2015 and job completed 11/2016). The amount of time their subcontractors were actually in the building doing actual work was less than 2 months. The rest of the time was us waiting for progress without hearing anything from Canty. It required countless, repeated inquiries to find out where things were during the project (they promised a Project Manager to oversee the project and to constantly communicate with us, but that never happened, so we were relegated to dealing with their front office/receptionist). Canty does a lot of big commercial office/lab projects, so little folks like us are low on their priority list, and thus receive corresponding customer service. Had we known that this would be the case, we would have chosen a different contractor, and even paid more for acceptable customer service. If you are a large corporation, then you may have a better experience with Canty, but if you're a small player, then please be warned. You will have to wait, you will have to manage the project for them, and the job will take a long time.

  • The various projects with them have gone well. I'm proud of the joint custom projects which incorporate creativity and complexity. I'm pleased that their open to my ideas and what can be done. I'm glad that they know a lot of what I don't know. And I'm delighted they're successful not only with me but a growing clientele, and recommend them without any question. Make sure, as in projects with any contractor, that communication is excellent. You will be satisfied. They are in business for the long haul. I have a growing business, cre8stay, and I hope they can be an important part of my future growth and success.

  • The extension of the deck was solidly built and matched with the old deck perfectly. The cat enclosure (or catio) was a work of art and my cats love it! To see it go to "Jeana's Dirty Dog Salon" in Cambridge where a picture is posted. Great work...

  • D&R were great. They did an excellent job with this project, and the floor and walls looked like new, seamless connections and fine finish work. They installed a floor that would allow water to drain beneath the floor to avoid future damage. I was very satisfied and have had no leaks since this work was done.

  • All of the work was done properly and efficiently with great professionalism. They were prompt, courteous, and respectful and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who needs work done in or around their house.
