Basement & Foundation reviews in Brookline

We were very pleased. We decided to replace a 100 year old water main from the street to our house Brookline, and used Farrell because they were doing work a few houses away, and the contractor recommended them.. Because of our vacation, we had to schedule the work for the last week in October, which put them in a tight schedule, as the Town prohibits excavation after November 1. To make matters more difficult, Mark Wahlberg picked our already congested street for filming scenes for Wonderland at the same time, compressing the window for work to 1 rather than 2 days as is normal. But they did the work in one day, and coordinated with the Town. The workers were polite and efficient; this is not easy work. In addition, Neumar (the carpenter used by Farrell) afterwards did a wonderful job restoring a built in bench in the basement that had to be demolished for the water line work. He was nice, skilled, and very easy to deal with.

Bob and his team were excellent from the get go. They gave us a very thorough estimate, which rolled into a contract. This provided us with the confidence to go with them. I also read through every single review(Angies, google) of BGR before going with them. Our architect also highly recommended the team. The day to day dealings were very good as well. We have two dogs, and the whole team is dog friendly. We were also pleasantly surprised that at the end of the project we really didn't have to make a hit list and hound them. They fixed all the imperfections without being asked. They are also responsive to changes, and additional tasks we requested. Finally, the best part, they came in on budget. No surprise random 20K problems to deal with. Very happy about this. In all, We would highly recommend this whole team to anyone looking for an honest company, with great people. We attached a picture of the kitchen before the final backsplash was put in.

They were great. I initially asked for a quote in the fall for some masonry pointing work on our foundation, but had delayed the work until the spring since it was a shared area of our townhouse. When we were finally ready to go, they contacted me right away and got right to work on a good weather day coming out of the winter. Great work, very professional and the cost was very reasonable. I’d use them again for sure!

Lenny and his associate Steven do a great job. I have had them work on 4 properties of mine in the Boston area and it seems like there is nothing they can't do, and at a very affordable price. Some of the projects they have done for me include: Replacing windows Build new walls to subdivide spaces, move bedrooms/bathrooms Build a 3 story deck Rebuild a wrap around front porch Install cabinetry Install tiles in bathrooms These gentlemen are reliable, communicative, and clean up. I will continue to hire for all of my projects.

Communication with MRW was great every step of the way. It really helped take any uncertainty out of the project. There was a quick turn around on scheduling and receiving the estimate and the price was fair. Patrick, the owner, was honest and very professional. They showed up early to work each day so they were able to finish a little ahead of schedule. Even though this was a smaller job I felt like I was getting their full attention. Site was left cleaner than they found it. All in all, MRW was a pleasure to work with.

I had reached out to JMS (formerly J&MA) in July about doing some masonry repairs to the foundation in the back of my house (old fieldstone piling were the masonry was crumbling between the stones in spots). I had held off on the work because of some unrelated issues and after the winter weather this season I knew I needed to address the issue. I reached back out to JMS and they called me back the same day and took another look at the issues and were able to do the work the very next day during an unseasonably warm break in temperature. I couldn't have been happier with the quality of the work and the response time/scheduling was more than I could have ever hoped for. I'd highly recommend them to anyone who needs masonry work done!

Sean was beyond excellent. Our propane company was less than professional in my humble opinion, but Sean actually helped us by pushing them along to get the propane tank installed in the ground. Kind, punctual, efficient, shows up when he says he will show up, and even helped us out on the pricing because he could see we were getting screwed by the propane company. I couldn't recommend US General more wholeheartedly!

Sean and his team were fantastic. Quick response, minimal disruption, got all the necessary permits, installed the pipe efficiently and meticulously, and repaired the ground and pavement. No drama. Reasonable price. Called 3 of his references before doing the work, and all 3 said the same thing: they wish Sean did other trades as well because they wish they could hire him for everything. We agree! Just called him again to look into our sewer pipe, and he actually persuaded me to go another route other than excavating and replacing the pipe. Talked himself out of business. He's a straight shooter. Trustworthy.

At first Peter was very friendly and I immediately liked the idea of working with him and his team. He seemed very knowledgeable and he gave us the approach that was the best long term solution, not some patch or job that we'll have to revisit in the future. After determining that we would have to dig through an easement to the Brookline water main which was on our neighbor's property line Peter agreed to meet with the owner of the neighboring building and I on site to review the scope. Our neighbor had several questions (all of which I would have asked myself if the situation was reversed) regarding set up, liability, how the property would be restored, etc. After meeting with Peter and our neighbor on a Monday I didn't hear anything back from them for over a week. I phoned a couple of more times only to find out from someone else in the company that they didn't want to dig on the neighbor's property any more and wouldn't be willing to do so. This was the following Wednesday, 9 days later. On Thursday I left a message for Peter, with no response. On Friday morning I called his cell phone when a colleague answered and said "he left his phone on the table but wasn't around" so I left a message with him. After a few hours I tried Peter back again. After reaching him, I asked why they decided they didn't want to dig on our neighbor's property when they told us this was the best option previously, and why it took them 2 weeks to let us know about it. His response: "was it 2 weeks? It wasn't 2 weeks. How would you like it if I told you we weren't going to do the work at all!" in a very aggressive tone. To which I replied "that's fine if that's how you would like to proceed, I just need to know" to which Peter hung up the phone. It is unfortunate that this process ended with poor communication and aggressive and unwarranted behavior. I was looking forward to having Spencer Contracting do this work until not hearing from them for several days and the extremely poor customer service. I would not recommend this company for any work.

John did a fantastic job with our basement. Our project had many moving parts. Our basement was partially finished, but the last time any work was done down there must have been 40+ years ago. There were asbestos tiles on the floor. We had occasional water in the basement, which we wanted to address. And we wanted to add a bathroom with a shower to the unfinished space in our basement. John understood what we wanted to accomplish and came up with a comprehensive plan to give us a completely redone basement that met all of our needs. And he followed through on that plan perfectly. We are very pleased with the end result. The quality of workmanship is exceptional. John is a very skilled carpenter. He built a mantel for our fireplace, rebuild the stairs to our basement, and constructed customized storage space under the stairs. And John hired great sub-contractors to do the asbestos remediation, drain system, flooring, tile, plumbing, electrical, and painting. John and his wife Kim kept us well informed about the progress of the project, and John always made himself available to meet with us to discuss the project. We thought that John charged a fair price for the work that he did, and he provided a detailed itemized contract that made the pricing of the project transparent. We have had a number of folks work on our house over the years, and we have had many very good experiences with the people we have hired. But John stands out as the best that we've work with, and we will be sure to hire him again for any future projects.
