    OLD TYME CHIMNEY SWEEP
The whole procedure went very smoothly and much quicker than I anticipated. Dan Hill arrived at precisely the time we had agreed to (8 am). He was friendly, quick, and professional. He went right to work; looked at the flu; knew exactly what the problem was; went to his truck for a couple of tools; re-attached the flu pin to the screw link; tightened the set screw and was done. When he was done he showed me how the damper worked. Dan wrote up a receipt, I gave him a check, and that was that. His service was on time and efficient. He charged me a pre-agreed upon price (he had quoted me a price of between $125.00 and $250.00 depending on the type of problem).

    Southeastern Development Co., LLC
My wife and I selected Dana Nilson and his company SDC for modular home construction after interviewing and pricing "stick built" contractors and "wall system" contractors. For us, modular made the most sense because the project could be completed in half the time of a stick built house, was more cost effective than either a stick built or wall system, and will result in a higher HERS (Energy Efficiency) rating than either of the other approaches. Dana helped us design our home, plan the grading as the site has a large hill, work with us on the budget, handle the permitting and inspections, coordinate with Westchester Modular Homes, and act as Project Manager. He has a great sense of what works, especially for a home near the ocean, and a practical approach to solving the challenges that inevitably arise with new home construction on an unimproved lot. Dana also designed and constructed a porch and a two room addition on-site after the modular "boxes" were delivered and set. If I you chose the modular approach, we strongly recommend visiting actual modular houses to understand the true inside dimensions of each "box". It's hard to get a sense of the space from drawings alone. One other item to think about is including insulation between the first and second floors for noise reduction in addition to the insulation "envelope" around the house. Spend time getting the design and drawings right. Dana provided 3D images/renderings to help visualize the finished product. Once the design is accepted by the modular builder changes are very expensive or impossible. While we have all heard horror stories about contractors, our experience with Dana has been excellent. He does what he promises within the time frame he promises. He communicates often and well. During much of this project, I was out of the country and Dana arranged Project Reviews and drawing reviews using conferencing software over the Internet. He also installed a webcam so I could follow the construction progress remotely. In summary, a great experience with an experienced, knowledgeable, honest, and professional contractor. Highly recommended!

Not so well. They dumped their debris into a hole on my property. His bills state that prices include labor, materials, and disposal. Contacted via email to ask if they could clean up the mess. Did not get an email response. Came and covered the debris with dirt instead of removing it.

Ash Away Hearth & Chimney Inc
Bought a brand new Harman fireplace pellet stove which AshAway installed in June 2008.  We had it installed during the summer to avoid the winter rush and all went well.  The price was competitive, and the installation went well.November rolled around and when the weather got cold we started up the stove for the first use and it did not work.  That happens but we were disappointed.  We called Ashaway (it took several calls to get the service manager to call us back) and once reaching their service department, I was told it would take 3 weeks before someone could come out.  As this was a brand new stove, i was not happy and kept pushing until the owner told me that they were very backed up and that was the best we could do.  Basically, "this is our busy season, sorry".   When i complained that we needed the stove for heat I was told that this should be viewed as a backup source of heat, not the primary source.  Even calls to Harman were of no help - they will tell you it is up to the dealer to provide service.Since then I have found a very competent independent service who do a great job.  These stoves are not maintenance free and Ashaway does not do a good job of supporting what they sell.   If you use them, base your decision on price/availability and understand you'll be rolling the dice when it comes to service.

    Acushnet Alternative Heating
It took almost one year to get the gas fireplace installed. I put in repeated calls to owner that were not returned,or returned weeks or months later.I was told the unit needed upgrades, changes.asked to be called when ready...never called back .called him back, workers say the left messages with owner to call me back and he  never did! finally got things going 8 months later.he gave measurements to my contractor and opening to his specifications were done.all the while i repeatedly asked that he come by to check on opening as to not have any surprises at mounting. he never came by,when he did we needed to cut more tile!his workers who admitted that they maybe do one of these types of fireplaces per year mounted the unit scratching my granite sill tile in the process.after mounting in which plumber and electrician were present at my cost and telling them that it did not look mounted  correctly the unit had to be removed again because now they forgot to add mounting shield before attaching insert.owner took no responsibility for this.saying i did not make unit ..not his fault everyone else fault! he should have as a installer looked at his installation manual.by this time my unit is scratched dented and not as he told me at beginning that it would be flush ...3 inches out now!my frustration as well that of  the contractor and plumber finally the inspector who stated he has a line of complaints about this individual, we had  enough.they ,nore i can not recommend this company .he in the end admitting no wrong or partial wrong  took no responsibility for the blatant  mess of a job except to pay for my scratched tile polishing saying he the plumber and electrician were there too.really!!! gave me a great price  he said..no amount of so called great price is worth the amount of aggravation and lost time sitting and waiting on my time off waiting for a call he said would come and never returned time after time and the lousy job done by them.i even had to get out my level and show his workers installation was not square!to which i got a response of ...do you want me to fix it! in the end much to my amusement and the amusement of the contractor and plumber present he  stated the REAL REASON he dragged his feet was because someone told him...that i did not pay my contractor...with my contractor present!who quickly set him right.yes i pay and paid him too. I also spoke to another individual who had work done by this company and has similar experience. SAVE YOUR SANITY ...DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!....GOOD NEWS ,I HAVE A FIREPLACE READY FOR SUMMER!

    MASONS CORNER
I purchase a pellet stove on august 16th. I paid in full at that time and they said they would call when the stove arrived. I called in early September, because I still had not heard anything back from them. They said that it had not come in yet. So, I continued to call each week through the month of September. Still the company has indicated to me that it is still not in and that I should call back. I called back in October and still the stove is not in. They just keep telling me to call back next week. I have been around and have seen the same stove available at other stores, for less. I found that they were over charging me and have taken my money for something I have yet to receive. I called them and told them I wanted to cancel and they told me that I had to pay a 15% restocking fee. I asked why I had to pay a restocking fee for something that had not been delivered yet and they indicated that it had been ordered from their supplier and refused to cancel that order from the supplier. The contract that I had with them, does not speak of undoley delays in the delivery of the item purchased.
