    AAA Tire & Auto Service
I was on my way from Kentucky to Michigan when my car developed a loud squeal in the engine compartment.  After getting a charging system diagnosis at AutoZone and talking to my mechanic back home, it was determined this was most likely a
wheel with bad bearings on one of the accessories driven by the serpentine belt.  Since?as far as I knew?this could
mean the alternator or an essential tensioner or idler, I decided to leave my vehicle with AAA Tire & Auto (formerly Beavercreek Auto Service) in Dayton.  I left my car there around noon and asked them to take a look and let me know what was wrong.
The next day I hadn?t heard anything by mid-day.  I knew I would need the car that night, so I called them.  Once they finally got to
look at it, they called and told me it needed a new idler pulley.  Their quote for parts and labor was $175.  I did some quick research and found that the idler for my vehicle costs between $20 and $30 at the average auto parts store.  I didn?t know what
labor was involved, but based on previous mechanical experience with my vehicle, decided to take the risk of driving it home in that condition and plan on fixing it myself.
    Three notes:
    1. 1.  AAA was VERY busy and did me a favor by looking at my vehicle when they did.  I do appreciate this fact.  However, this was overshadowed by the following.
    1. 2.  What AAA did NOT tell me was that this particular idler was on a secondary belt driven by the crankshaft to run the A/C compressor.
            It?s January.
            In Ohio.
I didn?t need my air conditioning!
So instead of worrying the entire way home that my car was going to die, it would have been nice to know that?worst-case
scenario, if the idler experienced ?catastrophic failure? as my mechanic called it and fell off the car?I would have been able to keep driving just fine!
    3.  Most importantly, when I decided to replace this part myself, I discovered the process to remove it consists of touching?.wait for it: two bolts.
    TWO.
    BOLTS!
You loosen bolt A, relieve tension with bolt B, remove bolt A, remove idler, then mount new idler and install by reversing the order order.  That?s it!  No need to remove the alternator, use special tools, or put the car on a lift. Just two bolts.
If I were a mechanic, this job would have taken me 15 minutes to complete.  AAA quoted me $175 for a $25 part plus labor.  Was this reasonable due to their giving me a higher priority?  Or was it a $50 job accompanied by 125 dollars of gouging?  Did they just forget to mention the idler was insignificant to driving and safety?  Or did they neglect to tell me because they wanted to take advantage of me while I was away from home and in an supposed ?emergency? situation?  You be the judge.  As it was, my final bill was $50 for diagnosing the problem and ?putting everything back together? as AAA put it.  They had already ordered the new idler before talking to me, assuming I would give them the green light for repair.  It?s a shame they had to put that one bolt back in and tighten the other.  They definitely made a profit on me, but I definitely saved money by finishing the job myself.

    Import Automotive
I have been using them for 10 years now. They usually listen to me and they get the problem fixed that I complain about, and I easily get it for a reasonable price. They would warn me about other things but they won't sell me anything.

    Beckman Tire & Auto Center
I have been going to Beckman Tire for about two years now.  My first experience with Dave and his crew was when they installed a set of Nitto Trail Grapplers on my F-150.  I called to get quotes from several Tire shops around town and his rate with installation was the cheapest.  That experience was a very good one.
My next experience was with a brake/wheel issue on my Corolla.  That one didn't go so well, as there was a communication breakdown and they ended up charging me for something without talking to me about it first.  After addressing the issue with Dave, he made it right.
I have been back several times since then, for mostly brake and tire issues.  I did go a few months ago for a timing belt concern.  Once they determined that was the problem, they were up-front with me and told me that was beyond the scope of their typical work, so they gave me a referral to a guy down the road that did a fine job.
Dave is personable and professional.  His team is what you would expect of your typical mechanic shop.  They still don't do a great job of communication, but as long as I am proactive in calling them, they get the job done right.  He quotes fair prices and then sticks to his quote.

    AUTO ZONE

They read my OBD2 codes, recommended a repair shop to fix the problem, and gave me a lot of help with another problem.  I was going to buy stuff there, but turned out to not need any of it.

    HARPER'S CHEVRON
Harpers re-sealed the valve cover and there is no more oil leaking on my driveway. They also replaced the drive belt. Now my car does not shake when I am stopped at a stoplight. The service was fast and fairly priced. I will go to Harpers when I need future service.

    AA UNITED AUTO TRANSPORTS INC
Waited two weeks for Alpine to pick the car up.  No one ever contacted me to provide me with the status of my order.  I paid the money up front which is standard for this industry.  I had to call them every other day just to be told "a truck hadn't been scheduled yet".  Seller of car got pretty irate that vehicle was still sitting in his driveway so I cancelled the order and went with a competitor that picked up the car three days later.  Alpine did refund my money no questions asked.  And, I mean that!  They acted like it was no big deal, like they did it all the time.  From the start it didn't feel like they wanted my business.
I will not ever even consider using this company again.

    Car-Mart of Owensboro
Out of 7 issues, only one was fixed by them.  They rest, I repaired myself.  The one repair that they did was added to my loan.  I called them every other day for several months, then started showing up there.  I told them I wouldn't make another payment until the issues were fixed & was told that the vehicle would be repossessed & I would be responsible for the rest of the loan anyway.  They are a buy here, pay here place which is how they get people stuck.  People who don't have the best credit go there, get a vehicle then are stuck with vehicle that is a POS.  They can't afford an attorney to fight them.  I let them repo the Explorer and plan to fight if they come back after me.

    Kenny Kent Chevrolet
The salesman was really friendly and they let me do the looking. They told me about different stuff and went on a test drive. The first car I chose, they couldn't work out the finance to my satisfaction even though they were trying, so I saw another car I liked and they were able to work that one out. They really worked at doing everything I needed done and doing it my way. They were really good with following up and making sure everything was okay with the car.

    Hudson Toyota
They’re in Madisonville. I can get the oil changed there for free for two years, and they also offer a lifetime warranty on the car. I made an appointment, took my car in, got the oil changed, and left. That’s about all the service I’ve had done there. It was just a routine service, and I didn’t pay anything for it. The service was fine. They took my car in right away, and I got it back on time.
